When Fat Larry's Band had a hit on my song Zoom,
Virgin records pressed up a special edition collector's item version in pink which was shaped like Larry hiself done in carricature and the part that played on your phono was in the middle with the rest being Larry with a big smile on his face.

NO DISRESPECT INTENDED!!

Fayette - You should go to a pawn shop. You can probably find an 8track player there.

Motown used to make red records for promotion only, red for "hot" and DJ would play it because of that.

Color records are not a thing that was invented in the second part of the 20ieth century... many 78 rpm on the VOGUE catalogue from the 30's (I believe as I am not an expert) were already picture discs... they are worth a good price these days..
Talking about colored vinyls, SUN (the funk band) issued 'Live On'on orange vinyl, SIDE EFFECT 'Going Bananas' was on yellow vinyl, EASTSIDE CONNECTION 12" singles on the Rampart label were multi colored, Prince issued one of his promo 12" on gold vinyl and the 'Purple Rain' has a purple vinyl edition too, and in the direct to disc category there were a few on 'clear vinyl' (also the name of the label if I am not mistaken)
Anyway? there are so many it's hard to mention them all...
Since Bobby Eli mentioned the great Fatback shaped single, anybody here remember the RUFUS 'Party 'til You Broke' single in the shape of a dollar bill? Very nice too...
I also have a 7" single by old school rap group Hurt'em Bad & the S.C Band called 'Football rap' in the shape of a football... nice to see it spin... LOL
If we go deeper... there's one (a real favourite of mine) CD single 'The Imperial March' (Darth Vader theme song) that was issued in the shape of Darth's helmet!!!! I can't even understand how the CD is properly balanced to spin at 500 rpm without generating any vibrations but indeed it does play well! Sorry this one's far from the soul section but I just love that theme!!!!

That was Fat Larry Blaise!Don't go playing about the Fatback Band around me!You know better! And what no catalog numbers for the other records you mentioned?LOL Wonder B even has some records on black vinyl! The pressing quality on the picture discs were junk and alot of vinyl purists wouldn't buy the marble ones because they weren't "virgin" vinyl.I think Germany had to produce the most colored vinyl titles, paticularly during the height of 12" E.P.'s in the mid to late 80's. Maybe our nect thread can be on the cardboard and flexi-discs.Remeber puting a dime on the record and not the tonearm?LOL

In the 60s a Scandinavian company used to release the Righteous Brothers' Spector singles in all colours - blue, yellow, green...

In the eighties the (UK) Motown Chartbusters albums were reissued on coloured vinyl. Volume three was pressed on clear vinyl - presumably to correspond with the metallic silver sleeve. It looked great, but was damn-near impossible to play. The dificulty was in finding the run-in groove, when the grooves from the other side showed through!

Yes Bobby and $Bill... I typed that mistake just to see if anybody here would read it... (LOL no seriously it was 3am over here and I had almost fell into coma... I was on auto-pilot as far as typing was concerned!)
Of course it was the Fatback.. I mean Fat Larry's Band LOL! I do have that record so how could I mess this up...
$ Bill I know what you mean about the virgin vinyl purists but I still play that Eastside Connection 12" with great pleasure and the sound is great even so...

I was happy to find the Yellow Magic Orchestra LP on yellow vinyl recently, as I enjoyed a cousin's copy when it was first released.

Also I recently found a fluorescent yellow used copy of Kraftwerk's "Pocket Calculator" single. This would replace the one I gave away back in the day.

In the mid '70s a label called VINTAGE had only colored vinyl 45s! Colors ranged from bright pink, yellow, orange, purple, blue, etc.! The artists and music on these 45s was basically doowop.

I have a clear one too....some Detroit things on it.

A vinyl reissue of Motown Chartbusters used all the colours and more.

I have the Supremes Rogers And Hart album on an orange Japanese label.

The unedited Freda Payne Band Of Gold version was initially issued with a green label and "gold" vinyl. The match was a bit hard on the eyes!
