Happy B'Day Tammi... Everytime I think of you there's this image coming back to my mind... the video of you and Marvin singing outside in the cold, next to a phone booth, that immortal Ashford & Simpson song 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'... you both seemed so happy...

Hi Wonder B. I love that clip of Marvin and Tammi too. She looked really nice in that blue and white outfit with that cool hat on! I always wondered whether she was wearing a skirt or pantset in that performance because I could never see her whole outfit.

Yes Thommygirl, I asked myself the same question many times LOL She looks so sweet when she looks up to Marvin... The hat fits her like... I don't know... LOL I could watch that one over and over again for hours...

Thommygirl70 & Wonder B:
That clip of Marvin & Tammi is what got me hooked on Tammi in the first place. My mom had Marvin & Tammi's "United" & played it to death! I always tried to figure out who was the pretty woman on the cover in green dress & if she made any of other recordings. When I saw the clip on Marvin & Tammi on Motown 25, I wanted more! I found Tammi's only solo recording & played it & played it & played it.....well you catch my drift. :o) I also have another clip with Tammi, wearing what looks like is green-goldish spagetti strip dress & a pixie haircut(I think it's a wig), singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Marvin.
Peace!

Eli, I'd like to hear more of that story! Sal
Mineo was my favorite actor! Are you referring
to a place in Philadelphia or LA?

Randi, this was in Philly in the early 60's(oops)
when the "Peppermint" craze was happening as in the Peppermint Lounge in NYC and the Peppermint Twist etc. so Irv Nahan opened a Peppermint Stick club in Downtown Philly and I was in the "house band" along with some of my very early mates .
Sal Mineo was in town appparantly promoting a film when he came over to check it out and wham!!!..it was all in fun though.

Check out the Marvin & Tammi double CD anthology our dear pal HW compiled last year. The cover shot is from the "United" photo shoot.
Has anyone heard Tammi's version of Stevie Wonder's "All I Do" that is on the Cellarful of Motown CD? What a haunting arrangement! Tammi sounded great on the track.
Now, excuse me while I dig up my "Marvin & Tammi Greatest Hits" LP (yes, I did say LP!)....

Common, I have that video of Marvin/Tammi where she is wearing that green and yellow spaghetti strap dress with the short wig(I love that wig on her!). She and Marvin looked so cute together in that footage. I always wondered what show that segment was from because I taped it from a vh1 special. Oh yeah, and the double cd anthology is awesome! I love all the little hidden 'goodies'. and the pictures are superb too. For the life of me I've always wondered who the man is duetting with Tammi on the 'Oh How Id Miss You' demo! If anyone knows puhleeze give a shout out about it on the board Thanks alot. That laugh that Tammi had was great she sounded like she was having a great time in the studio. I love the little piece of "ANLTRT" that she and Marvin did acapella. I wish it had of been longer. Hehe, "we have to do it again" I love when she said that.

Oh yeah, I'm back with a little funny side note. When I first became a fan of Tammi's as a teenager(its been about seven years now) I used to practice putting on eye makeup in the mirror just like her. Of course I didn't dare try to go out in public like that tho! I bought some liquid eyeliner and I used to practice forever trying to get the makeup on my eyelids to match hers. I could never do it. I swear you must have had to have been an artist back in the day to get that stuff on there like that. I would always try but end up looking like a raccoon. I never did try false eyelashes tho, I was always too embarassed to buy them at the store. I don't know why, hehehe!
By Common (209.2.55.170) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 10:02 am: |
KevGo: Yes, I know that photo shot is from "United". I've seen it quite a few times, particularly on an LP called "Marvin & his girls". I wanted to buy the duets compliation with Marvin/Tammi but it looked to be used. I prefer a seal copy for obvious reasons.
Yes I've heard "All I Do" from "Cellarful". Between that song & Jimmy's songs, those are the ones I play the most. I like Tammi's version of "All I Do" than Stevie's. Tammi gives a very sweet yet sassy performance.
Thommygirl70:
The footage looks like it is from an british program(I think!). I wish they had shown the whole outfit but I think they didn't because the way Tammi was situated on the pillars, her towering over Marvin. As for the outtakes on the CD, I think it was mentioned that it might've been either Harvey Fuqua or Johnny Britol. Don't quote me on that, though. :o)
Peace!

Hey Vicki,
Awwww, thanks! Some of the clothes that Tammi wore, fit her so well. I'll also mention Tammi in a polka dot bikini, which I think was taken during her illness. I have that pic in one my Motown books. If anything, I think Mrs. Johnson or Mrs. Powell did a great job when it came to accesorizing & finding great clothes for their singers. I wonder if Tammi had any input her clothing choices? Then again, we'll just have to wait for the book! :o)
Peace!

Vicki:
Little anecdote for you...
There's a classic photo of Marvin & Tammi in a studio wearing small microphones around their necks. This photo was taken from a 1967 appearance on NBC-TV's "Today" show. A dear friend of mine named Jimmy Norman (who is a legend in his own right as a songwriter/singer/producer whose career bounced between LA & NYC) sang background vocals for Marvin & Tammi's appearance on the show (he & the other singers weren't on camera). He said that Tammi was a wonderful woman and a great talent & that Marvin protected her like a kid sister.
Next time I see Jimmy, I'll tell him about your project.

Common, are you talking about the pix of her during her illness which were taken with Jocko Henderson, and her family members? She looks nice with that bathing suit on. I have a picture of her with Ludie outside the Uptown Theater from that same day. She was wearing some really cool sandals!! And you're right she was a really great dresser. My all-time favorite Tammi outfit is, I must say, that green and yellow spaghetti dress we were talking about earlier. It totally went well with her hair and everything. I also liked when she wore that long black wig too. Oh, and thank you Vickie for that wonderful compliment. That means a lot to me Even though I never met Tammi, she seemed like an amazing person. Her music(with Marvin as well as her solo work) has gotten me through many hard times as well as happy ones too. Oh yeah, one more thing, I didn't know that performance was from the Today show!! That was a nice little tidbit of info that I didn't know. Thanks!

Hey Thommygirl70,
Yes, that pic. Wasn't the pic taken at Jocko Henderson's home? And that pic with Tammi & Ludie, wasn't that from an article that was done on Tammi in ebony a year before she passed? I recall seeing the pics in TT's club. And didn't know that pic where she is wearing that purple/pink dress was taken at the Today show either! Interesting! BTW, have you heard Tammi's version of "All I Do"? What did you think of it?
Peace!

Yes, you are correct, that was from the november 1969 ebony magazine article on her. I have heard a small snippet of "All I Do". I wish I had the whole song I have heard various people on the internet talk about what a great version of that she did. The portion that I have heard sounds really, really good. I will definitely order it soon. I am soooo lazy when it comes to ordering things off of the internet. I just put it off and never do it, hehe! There are actually three cds with Tammi on them that I want to get that I really, really want, one is the Cellar Full of Motown with the "All I Do" on there and then the Essential Collection which has two songs that I don't have "Lone Lonely Town"(A long time ago I heard that whole song on the internet and I remember it was great) along with "Slow Down". I also wanna get the James Brown Original Funky Divas cd which has a song on there which I don't have called "If You Don't Think" Aaaaaah, so many things I want with so little money But I think that I will finally stop being so lazy and buy them...eventually,lol!
Speaking of James Brown, I was over at towerrecords.com a little while ago and I noticed that he had also recorded the "I Cried" song that Tammi had also recorded during her musical time with him. Its on an album of his titled 'Ballads' I had never heard any part of his version before and didn't know that he had done one. It sounds pretty good.
