Fayette,
Don't worry sweetie. In California we refer to a 4.9er as a nice foot massage.

It is a bit unnerving to have your coffee cup walk across the table by itself. Glad everything's OK.

Let's all stand in a doorway and brace ourselves...
Had one up here in the PNW a couple of years ago that did some serious damage in Seattle. Dora and I were sitting in front of a couple slot machines in an Indian casino in Omak, when both them and us started swaying back and forth. Thought I was having a stroke.
And we're still waiting for "THE BIG ONE". With my luck, it will set off Mt. Ranier.

To Stubass ,

I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time the Loma Prieta earthquake hit . Just minutes before Game 4 of the 1989 World Series against the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's
at Candelstick Park , which the Giants left 3 years ago for newer and more safer digs in downtown SF .

The earthquake was 7.0 on the Richter Scale and killed 67 people and injured over 10,000 . The
epicenter was situated near the village of Loma Prieta , in Santa Cruz County , some 70 miles southeast of San Francisco and 20 miles southwest of San Jose .

The quake caused a double decked section of I-880
near a housing project on the west side of Oakland to collapse , a segment of the upper deck of the
Bay Bridge on the Oakland side fell onto the lower deck , and a massive fire erupted in the Marina District of San Francisco when a gas line ruptured during the shaking , which lasted only for 15 seconds . The city of Watsonville was literally levelled and the city of Santa Cruz suffered substantial damage .

I was an EMT for a private ambulance firm at the time it hit and let me tell you it was an experience that I will never forget .

OK DERRICK AND RALPH: NOW I KNOW WHICH ONE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT...SINCE I SAW IT ON T.V. AWAITING THE START OF THAT WORLD SERIES GAME!!!...YES...THAT WAS A "BIG ONE"...JUST DIDN'T KNOW THE NAME OF IT...ALWAYS THOUGHT OF IT AS THE "WORLD SERIES EARTHQUAKE"!!!...APOLOGIES...STU

After the quake, I'm glad you can still make appearances on the SoulfulDetroit forum and you're still connected to the outside world. We love hearing from you Fayette.

I lived through the LA Quakes of 1971 (San Andreas Fault), 1987 (Whittier Narrows) and 1994 (Northridge).

In 1994, I was living alone (post divorce) in a nice, solid built 3 br. in the South Bay section of LA. House was built in 1957. Solid as a rock.

Ever watch your walls torque and bend and windows bowing, about to pop? Worse than waking up next to Linda Blair in full makeup. And the concept of wearing "Depends" looked pretty dang reasonable to me then.

Now you folks down South have a feel what we seemto go thru every few years. 4.9 isn't bad, but if you've never experienced one before, it's frightening. You feel totally helpless, and seconds turn into eternity. Try a 7+ sometime. South America has those all the time. I read once that for every increase of a tenth, the intensity factor is MULTIPLIED BY 10!
