"Goin' To The Motor City (In My Raggedy Jalopy)
- the Satintones
Do I get a bonus point for mentioning the Motor City ?
And how could I almost forget Martha and the Vandellas' "Motoring" (although I'm not sure
that cars are really what they're singing
about:-))

Fayette,
I can think of quite a few,
but will name just the one for now,and it has just got to be
'Rocket 88'
by
Jackie Brenston
with
Ike Turner's superb
Kings of Rhythm Band.
Although it is a largely instrumental cut,
it features around 3 or 4 short vocal blasts.
First issued as a 78 then as a 45 in around 1954ish on the Chess Record Label with the Silver Top Label with Vertical printing on it.
Apparantley Jackie Brenston
was the Cousin of Ike Turner and aged 20 Jackie went along to cut the record with Ike and co. at the Memphis Studio of Sam Phillips.
Sam Phillips on hearing the record
made the statement that it was 'The first rock'n'roll record'.
It topped the R&B Charts,
but it caused internal friction with Ike resenting the fact that he was being given a subsidiary role in the whole affair.
Wasnt the 'Rocket 88'
the name of a car?
