Jimmy Landers relocated to Cleveland in the sixties and has been a fixture in night clubs for decades.

I remember seeing Lee Jennings lip synching "Just Keep On Loving Me" on Ken Hawkins (WJMO) World of Soul television show, also in the sixties.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Joe Moorehouse (64.12.97.7) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 10:53 am:

Mel, Star Track records, like Whip, was just another label used by Sonny Marshall at Dotty's. In fact, the Gail Nevilles record was released on both Star Track and Dotty's, though of course there are very few copies of either around. But I think Lee Jenning (as he is billed on that record, though his name does actually have an S on the end of it), Sue & Mel, and Gail Nevilles represent the total output of Star Track.

RD, it's likely that the person you saw as Lee Jennings on Cleveland TV wasn't actually Lee at all, but his cousin. Just as the record was being pressed, Lee was drafted and had to leave for boot camp, then Vietnam. When the single became a hit in Cleveland, Lee's cousin went there and pretended to be Lee--did bunches of live shows in various clubs, etc. Lee himself didn't find out about it until much later, and he never returned to Detroit after getting out of the army.

Interesting story Joe. I wouldn't have known the real Lee Jennings from a fake one anyway. Was Lee's cousin a bit older than Lee? The guy I saw looked a little old for the draft. Where did Lee lived after he left the service? Ken had mainly obscure artists on his show. I remember seeing Roger Hatcher once and Rog and Ken played it up like Hatcher was in the midst of some cross country tour with gigs galore.

I was told a long time ago that Rudy Robinson may of been the owner of the Label,so that fits in nicely with your fine self also mentioning it.

Medusa9,

I do not "remember" Lee Rogers... but I found him on D-town when I collected local Detroit labels. I have 34 singles on D-Town, five of them are recorded by Lee Rogers. It's a great local 60's Detroit label. Label designs are mostly yellow with black lettering, but I have also got orange, light blue and red... I'll post any scan here if you are interested...

Lars, we're always interested! I've got a few D-Town 45s with as many different label designs but I've never seen a blue label!

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.33.229) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 07:33 am:

"I Want You To Have Everything" was the late Lee Rogers (nee Roger Craton)most successful record receiving airplay and some sales outside of the Detroit area. Another Rogers' tune that achieved some regional play was "Sad Affair." The Precisions' "You're Sweet" made its way to a few other cities too. But the rest of D-Town/Wheelsvilles output stayed mainly local and Michigan.

"I Want You To Have Everything" actually made Billboard's R&B chart - #17 - in '65.

Guys,

What do these M. Hanks records sound like? Were they popular back in the day??

Top of pageBottom of page   By LG Nilsson (213.89.30.85) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 04:04 pm:

Larry,

If you compare the D-Town singles with the Motown ones from the same time you will find that the Motown releases were more sophisticated in sound. D-Town is more bluesy and down to earth. Motown was very well produced pop/soul music. D-Town was rough R&B. There are exceptions of course, but I only give you the big picture.

DT1041.jpg

This Lee Rogers issue was released in the later yellow design more to follow if D-Town records were popular at the time? I cannot say. But if you look at the national Billboard charts they were not. Maybe someone from Detroit can answer if they were local hits.

I just listened to a lot of Lee Rogers and other D-Town singles. It must have been about 15 to 20 years ago last time I listened to this single. Dont know much about her This Lillian Dupree track is a very Motown / Ric-Tic / Groovesville sound alike record.

DT51.jpg

Both sides are good. Other side is (Ive Got A) Shield Around My Heart. This later label design has the white field around the D-Town logo.
