This is another movie that's never gonna make it out to the booneis (heck, I'm having trouble RENTING Standing In The Shadows...). But the trailer looks good, and (with 1 exception--there's always a party pooper) the reviews have generally been excellent.
Understand the film was held for 2 years to keep it out of the way of the Funk Brothers.

I think we need to forget what anyone says and go out and support this movie. These are our treasures and they need to be honored for giving so much to their audiences for decades. I for one will go to see it!

Sam Moore was on Letterman last night, but only sang into the breaks.Dave did mention the movie and the soundtrack though and seemed to quite enjoy him.Paul of course was was in his own personal heaven as always. If you catch the show or any other NYC event on a regular basis, you know that Paul is a huge Soul/Funk fan.Seems that's all he plays anymore.I'm personaly not crazy about his arrangments, but his heart is truly in the right place.

I am just thrilled that extraordinary performing talents of Mary
Wilson have been captured on film for all times. This further
validates her status as one of America's Music Legends. I was lucky
to be in the Westbury Music Fair audience the night they filmed Mary'
concert segments. She was tremendous that night.
I am sure even Berry Gordy, Motown and all of Detroit is proud of Mary.
She does well now, but I am certain that her performing fees are going to go way up now after the release of this film!
Now I am waiting for her new CD she recorded in Detroit. Go Mary, get busy, it's ya birthday!! LOL

Before you put on the SITSOM DVD, do the following:
1. Turn off the ringer on the phone.
2. Turn on the answering machine
3. Get a box of tissue (trust me, you'll need it for parts of this movie)
4. If you have any kids/relatives/significant others, place the DO NOT DISTURB sign near the couch (if you're watching it in the bedroom, the doorknob will do).
5. Make some popcorn & munchies (save some for me - LOL).
Finally - ENJOY THE MOVIE!

I can tell you now ( because I was in the audience of the concert for Mary Wilson that was used in the film)she was awesome! It was at the Westbury Music Fair in 1999. The Four Tops were also on the bill. Mary sang Stevie Wonders "Bad Weather" that he wrote for the Supremes and brought the house down. They gave her somewhere between 6-7 standing ovations and at one point nearly covered the stage with roses being handed to her. She sounded good, very good.

I just read an article how the internet has brken some indie movies wide open. Dont underestimate this movie--lets all go! Isnt it it something how what goes around comes around?Who would thought that Mary,at 59, would have been hotter than ever. Down with ageism-up with talent!!
By Marv (152.163.188.68) on Sunday, May 04, 2003 - 09:59 am: |
You are so,so right Vandelron. We definitely need to support this movie as well as all of our Classic Soul Artists (in concert, CDS, movies etc). Yep Mary Wilson is "Red Hot" LOL!!!

LA Times review of Only the Strong--Mary Wilson:"...stirkingly attractive--a lead singer with a star quality never fully recognized..." It is now Mary's time!

The movie got a mostly bad review on Ebert and Roper's syndicated movie program. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times went thumbs up, but only because of the music. He criticized the filmmaker's "banal questions." Richard Roper went thumbs down, but also said he enjoyed the music. I believe Ebert said "Only the Strong Survive" couldn't compare to the Funk Brothers movie. They wanted more questions about where these people are in their lives now, whether they were ripped off, etc. I haven't seen it, so, I can't judge it until I do.

I will go see this movie regardless of what anyone says. It has many of my favorites and when was the last time Legendary Soul Music Artists have received this much attention? How long must we wait? Go see the movie!!!!
By Reese (12.15.169.254) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 01:43 pm: |
I saw this movie, and I'm inclined to agree with Ebert and Roper. The music saves the film. I hope the film does well, but I doubt it will do as well as STANDING IN THE SHADOWS because its not as well done.
The filmmaker doesn't seem to have a clear purpose. He just jumps from subject to subject, never asking anything especially pertinent. YOu just know that these people have some stories to tell. Only in the case of Sam Moore does the movie become more thought-provoking. I just read in an article this morning that Sam Moore himself is not pleased with the film.

On Mary's website there are listings for several
promotional dates she is doing...May 8th, which
was last Thurs., says she is on the Tonight Show
with Wilson Pickett & Sam Moore. I did not see
the broadcast, did anyone? Was May 8th the date
they filmed and it will be aired later?
By Reese (12.15.169.254) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 04:28 pm: |
Mary didn't appear on THE TONIGHT SHOW due to a scheduling conflict, I believe. Sam Moore and Isaac Hayes appeared.

I went to see the premier showing of "Only the Strong Survive" and at the showing only (7)people including myself were there. And that was on a Saturday night! I enjoyed the movie, but I overlooked the fact that it didn't flow too well. Rufus Thomas was good. Carla Thomas did an outstanding job! Her voice was as strong and clear as it was when her hit "Gee Whiz" was out. She sang with so much soul and feeling it made you cry. It was one of the best performances I've witnessed. BUT, the camera didn't treat her well. The shots of her at times were much too close. She hasn't aged well and it hurt to see her with most of her front upper teeth missing. But what a voice. And she's stayed in Memphis along with her Dad. Doing their thing. It was quite insightful.
to hear her and her Dad reflect on the golden years while she was at Stax. In one scene, shot at a local bar in Memphis, they were doing a benefit for Luther Ingram, but they never steadied the camera on Luther and NEVER interviewed him. Carla Thomas was singing on stage. Thestage band sounded good. I believe a couple of the musicians were from the Stax early days, but again not sure...the producer never gave them any props. And it was like Luther Ingram was just a member of the audience. He never got any props. That to me was sinful for the producers to do that!
It was good to see and hear Wilson Pickett. The stories he told as he reminensed were funny. His interview was broken up into several segments and again, it just didn't flow. Wilson looked good and sounded great.
After leaving the theater I couldn't help but wonder...why were the Chi-lites in the film. Why was Mary Wilson in the film. This was supposed to be about the Memphis sound primarily. What about the Memphis horns and musicians that made the sound (much like "Standing in the Shadows"...). What about the Bar-Kays. Why not have the Soul Stirrers; Al Green; David Porter; Solomon Burke; Why not a more lengthy interview of Issac Hayes. (the interview with him was much too short). But then again, I thought this was the first time in over 30 years that I saw Anne Peebles onstage and she lokked and sounded great.
Sam Moore sounded superb. He hasn't lost a thing. I could have listended to more of his songs. He sang with intensity; powerful delivery; hitting those high notes and not slouching in his stage pressence. Awesome!
Jerry Butler....the Iceman rules. Close your eyes and it's 1962 again. He's still sooooo smooth. You can tell life has threated him kind. He looks good.
There were funny parts to the film especially the scenes were Rufus Thomas and the DJ (forgot his name) were kibitzing. real funny.
Overall....great performances captured on film, but I left the theater feeling that it was a story not completely told. Too many fine artists and musicians were completely overlooked.

You're kidding, right Boopman, no way is Carla Thomas missing her upper front teeth, no way. This has to be false. If true why didn't she get a partial plate for the movie?
By TonyRussi (68.210.2.246) on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 08:05 am: |
That is truly sad about Carla Thomas because in years past it seemed that she was doing alright. Her interview in the "Women of Soul Book" which wasn't too many years ago, indicated that she lived comfortably in Memphis with her parents.Maybe things really went down after Rufus' passed.
