Hercules, hero of song & story
Hercules, winner of ancient glory
fighting for the right, fighting with his might
with the strength of 10 ordinary men
Hercules, people are safte when near him
Hercules, only the evil fear him
darkness in his eyes, iron in his thighs
virtue in his heart, fire in every part
of the mighty Hercules

That was the theme song Johnny Nash on that particuliar cartoon show...how 'bout that!

What was the duet Johnny Nash recorded with Kim
Weston and what label was it on?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Common (209.2.55.170) on Thursday, April 24, 2003 - 12:33 pm:

Randy: I have that LP. I brought it up in Kim's thread but no one seemed to know what I was talking about. I'm glad that you mentioned it! It was a solid LP & the chemistry between Kim & Johnny was wonderful. The label was called "Banyan"(??) & was distributed by MGM. It was produced by Kim's former hubby, William "Mickey" Stevenson. I'm not sure what song was released from the LP but is it "Baby Don't You Leave Me" or "Without You"?

Peace!

Was the label called "Banyan Tree"? According to my discographies, they list two Kim Weston-related singles under that label:

BANYAN TREE 1001
Kim Weston & Johnny Nash
"We Try Harder"/"My Time"

BANYAN TREE 1002
Kim Weston
"Changes"/no b-side listed

Hope this helps!

According to Berry Gordy's autobiography and a few sources, Mickey Stevenson left Motown in the mid to late 1960s to produce at MGM Records. I believe Kim recorded a solo LP at MGM as well as the duet album with Johnny Nash (who was hot with "Hold Me Tight" on the JAD label). Mickey also produced the Righteous Brothers' "Souled Out" LP on Verve.

Funny you mention this LP by Kim and Johnny... I only found it 4 days ago in a little shop in downtown Philly... I was so very lucky to get it for a VERY fair price and more so as it is in mint condition... I had been trying to get it for years without any success (most copies I wanted to buy were totally ruined!)
Great LP indeed...

Here's another one going for 'record' trivia, and when I found the 'answer' to this one, it just totally blew me away!

Back in 1967, Johnny Rivers came out with a 'Top 40' hit, the song in question was "Summer Rain", remember that number?

Now, can anyone 'reaffirm' on this forum who wrote, who actually penned... this particular Johnny Rivers hit?

Summer rain, taps at my window
West wind, soft as a sweet dream
My love, warm as the sunshine
Sitting here by me, yeah
She's here by me

Golden hair, shining like moonglow
Warm lips, soft as her soul
Sitting here by me, now
She's here by me

All summer long, we were dancing in the sand
Everybody just kept on playing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

We sailed, into the sunset
Drifting home, caught by a gulf stream
Never gave a thought for tomorrow
Let tomorrow be, yeah
Let tomorrow be

She wants to live in the Rockies
She says that's where we'll find peace
Settle down, raise up a family One to call our own, yeah
We'll have a home

All summer long, we were groovin' in the sand
Everybody just kept on playing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

Winter snows, drift by my window
North winds, blowing like thunder
Our love, is burning like fire
And she's here by me, yeah
She's here by me....

Now somebody, tell me again, who was it that wrote this song?
When I found out-- wow, I've would've never guessed!

James Hendricks wrote "Summer Rain", Johnny's 11th US Top 20 single. Hendricks drifted to Canada and hooked up with Cass Elliott and Denny Doherty(later of The Mamas & Papas) and Zal Yanovsky(later of The Lovin' Spoonful) to form The Mugwumps(yep, immortalized in that dreadful "Creeque Alley" hit by the M's & P's), which later incorporated John Phillips. The story gets freaky(for me) right about here; at one point he actually married Cass Elliott(pre-Mama Cass)to avoid the draft. Yikes! Personally I would have enlisted to avoid marrying Mama Cass!

Hendricks and Johnny Rivers also collaborated on "Look To Your Soul" and "Something's Strange".

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.13.31) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 10:52 am:

Well, I tried.....
.....extended trivia. The Mugwumps cut a version of "Jug Band Music" that puts the Lovin' Spoonful's version to shame.

You're the winner!

Actually James Hendricks was a.k.a... Jimi Hendrix, when Tom Ryan mentioned that on WOMC some time ago, that just blew me away!

Jim F.--James Hendricks and Jimi Hendrix can't be the same guy. Hendrix was never affiliated with the Mugwumps and certainly was never married to Cass Elliott.

Plus, think about it; "Summer Rain" has no earmarks whatsoever of a Jimi Hendrix composition. I don't think Jimi could write a song like that.

I know it's either brave or foolhardy to contradict you Jim (Mr. Factoid) but I can't help but feel that you're mistaken on this one. Peace.

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.13.31) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 02:20 pm:

I don't know any of the details, but James was a white singer/songwriter in the James Taylor mold who released a couple lp's in the late '60's. Must of suffered severely under that name handicap.

Top of pageBottom of page   By john dixon (205.188.209.109) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 02:28 pm:

ps. Jim, I got some of the above information from the sleeve notes of Johnny's "Realization" CD which goes on to state that James Hendricks released an LP around that time called "Songs Of James Hendricks" that included solo versions of "Summer Rain" and his other co-written composition w/ Johnny Rivers, "Look To Your Soul", another song that couldn't possibly have been written by Jimi Hendrix. Stylistically it was just not his bag. If Hendricks/Hendrix were the same guy I'm sure the sleeve notes would have pointed it out.

John Dixon,
Well, I see... but that's what struck me about having heard, about who was it that actually wrote, "Summer Rain"!

I couldn't believe it was Jimi Hendrix, that just maybe he could have possibly wrote that? Then I thought to myself what 'diverse' talent, this 'kid' must've really had!

You know, I guess I have to email Tom Ryan on http://www.womc.com because that is where I initially had 'picked' it up, on the TOM RYAN SHOW, after he had played the Johnny Rivers song, and that was well, quite some time ago.

Of course my reaction, after having said, was... WOW... I didn't know that. And who would have guessed!

Anyone else can fill the blanks, by all means go ahead! But now, if this is true... and John, I have no reason to doubt all you have stated, well that surely puts the 'jeopardy' into this whole 'trivia' game, and now the very question, was all for naught.

So the question now remains... then who was Tom Ryan's 'source' for that bit of information he shared with us, heard on the radio?

Thank you... John Dixon and Douglasm for the clarification-- just goes to show it now seems, that I was dead WRONG on this one!

He's apparently been resonably active, especially in the Christian field. Wrote the theme for the TV show "Then Came Bronson", and is doing another project with Johnny Rivers.

"Then Came Bronson", wow, what a flashback. I used to love that show; kinda like "Route 66" on a motorcycle. The titular guy (Bronson), travelling from town to town, making friends, giving advice, playing Cupid, putting to rest simmering conflicts, and solving problems before moving on to the next town.

Hey, leave the motorcycle part out and it sounds like the Jimmy Ruffin persona on his records!

James hendricks is definately not Jimi Hendrix. When MTV started, dj's used to say that JJ Jackson of "It's Alright" fame was the same guy that was the VJ on MTV ; that wasn't true either.

Jim:
James Hendricks was a LA-based songwriter who worked in the same circles as P.F. Sloan, Steve Barri, Jim Webb & John Phillips. He started his career with the folk group the Mugwumps (which also featured Zal "Lovin Spoonful" Yanovsky and Jim's girlfriend Mama Cass Elliot). When Johnny Rivers started his own publishing company, Webb & Hendricks were hired as staff songwriters (Fifth Dimension manager Marc Gordon was the company's Professional Manager).

James wrote the two A-sides from Rivers' gold album "Realization" - "Summer Rain" (Billboard Pop #14) and "Look To Your Soul"(Billboard Pop #49).

Speaking of Jimi Hendrix, he used to hang around
with Ronnie Spector in LA while he was "hot" and
she was married to Phil. I don't mean in the
boy-girl sense, just friends. She used to drive
him around in her camero and says he was always
having a problem getting money from his record
company-Warner Bros. She and Estelle also went
down to the studio one night and did backgrounds
on the song "Earth Blues" on the Rainbow Bridge
LP. The sleeve credits "Ronettes" on background
vocals.

too?
