Medusa9e:
KevGo here. Thanks for the inquiry - I will try to keep this (somewhat) brief.

I'm an oldies reissue producer based in NYC & I've been in the music biz for twenty years (radio + record retail + labels). The labels I've worked with ranged from Columbia Records (liner notes for Earth Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits CD from 1998) to Brunswick (co-produced Jackie Wilson's Greatest Hits CD [1998] and researched for other collections) and currently Night Train International (NOLA Records, D-Town/Wheelsville, Sport).

Currently, I formed my own label - Libra Records - and signed three acts to the company. Libra' focus will be on R&B, jazz & pop for "grown-ups" (30+ audience).

I'm originally from Rochester NY and graduated from Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY) with a B.S. in Communications. Since my youth, I've been an avid record collector and researcher of music history, especially Motown & the soul music from Detroit, Philly and Chicago.

Hope this helps!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Jim (64.12.97.7) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 11:16 pm:

KevGo and STUBASS are certainly two of the most valued posters on this forum. KevGo has shared his vast knowledge of music, and STUBASS his very special brand of humor on almost every thread on the forum. Unconstrained by the confines of topic headings, they have generously shared their rich personal histories and their innermost thoughts with us.

Who here among us has not been enthralled by STU's adventures as a former musician, weekend newscaster, car salesman, brother of the guy who wrote the theme music for Designing Women, or acquaintance of many well known athletes and entertainers? Who hasn't howled at his zany hijinks, his thought provoking "versus" threads, his ingenious foiling of his employer's attempt to get him off Soulful Detroit, or his latest escapades with his "angels"? His sense of humor is just too big for lower case letters. You just never know what that crazy madcap cutup STUBASS will do next!

And we are truly privileged to have KevGo -- record industry executive, label impresario, disk jockey -- as he unselfishly graces us with his informative posts and inspirational insights, when he could be writing liner notes for the latest Carl Dugan and the Wanderers' Greatest Hits CD.

Personally, I find it irritating when irrelevant posts about music or trivial insights by less colorful posters interrupt the ongoing commentary of these two brilliant men. Perhaps we could be more considerate, and keep disruptions to a minimum, so that we might better observe, and learn from, the incredible dialogue we are privileged to witness, and even participate in.

Question for Stubass....
Is it easier to play the bass or the lead guitar.
My brother Ronald plays the bass and I never thought about the importance of it until I turned
21 (oh how I miss that number) whats with all of this stuff about how people still cant figure out how Jimi Hendrix and Jamerson did certain things.
Did the stuff they do post that difficult for today's musicians. I think Stevie Ray Vaughn came close to Hendrix but then Im no expert.

I heard Johnny Rivers (whom I adore) once say in an interview he STILL gets guys coming up to him saying that they cant do the riff in Secret Agent Man!!!! I wouldnt think that the riff in that is that difficult. Is Larry Graham's stuff considered difficult to play too? I would think that there must be a musician who can figure out some of Jamersons stuff. Who comes close? Did this guy have secret fingers or something. Look Im no guitar player but Jamersons stuff doesnt sound that hard to me. Innovative yes but hard to play no. Help the ignorant here. There are still a lot of young good musicians out there are they just being ignored or do they not put in the time people like you and Babbitt and Jamerson and Coffey and the others did. I bet you put a lead sheet in front of one of you guys and you can pick it up in 15 minutes and dont have to study it for days on end..

Steph....
....this is just a theory. Consider it in the same way one considers classical music. Most high school orchestras can play Motzart. Even I can play some of Jamerson's stuff, and I only made it through one side of "Play Guitar With The Ventures". The glory is in the creation of the music, in combination with the people that performed it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you can cover most anything. If you couldn't, most of the bar bands in the country would be out of business. But someone had to 1) create that music and 2) record it in such a way that makes someone else want to play it again.

Stu...
....am I close?

WOW STEPHANIE: THIS QUESTION COULD BE WORTHY OF A WHOLE THREAD OF IT'S OWN...BUT MY TAKE!!!...SINCE I WAS A BASSIST FROM DAY ONE...AND NOT A CONVERTED GUITAR PLAYER...I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT IT IS EQUALLY DIFFICULT TO PLAY EITHER INSTRUMENT WELL!!!...I WOULD AGREE THAT (AND I COULD TAKE SOME HEAT FOR THIS) THAT MANY OF THE LINES PLAYED BY JAMERSON...BABBITT...AND OTHER FINE BASSISTS LIKE LARRY GRAHAM...MAY NOT BE TECHNICALLY DIFFICULT...IN THAT I... OR OTHER LESS WORTHY BASSISTS COULD PICK UP THE LINES AND PLAY THEM FAIRLY WELL...EVEN EMBELLISH THEM TO SOME EXTENT...BUT GREAT BASSISTS HAVE AN UNMISTAKABLE FEEL THAT CANNOT BE DUPLICATED...AND THEY THEN DEVELOP SOMEWHAT OF A SIGNATURE SOUND!!!...SOMETIMES...THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF A BASSISTS MENTALITY...IS TO ALLOW YOUR PART TO FIT IN FOR THE SAKE OF THE OVERALL PRODUCT...MUCH LIKE DRUMMING...TASTEFULLNESS SHOULD RULE THE DAY!!!...I HAVE THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR GREAT GUITARISTS...IN THAT GUITAR PROBABLY ALLOWS THE MUSICIAN MORE ROOM FOR INDIVIDUAL EXPRESSION...ESPECIALLY IN THE LEAD FUNCTION...VERSUS A RHYTHM GUITARIST...WHO'S PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY MY BE STRICTLY STRUMMING TIME (ALTHOUGH GREAT CHORD PROGRESSIONS CAN CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO A FINISHED PRODUCT)!!!...WHICH IS MORE DIFFICULT???...PROBABLY THE ONE THAT SOUNDS THE BEST AND IS NOTICED TO A LARGER EXTENT AT THE TIME...BUT...FOR ANY GREAT PRODUCTION OR PERFORMANCE...LIKE SINATRA SAID...YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE...WITHOUT THE OTHER!!!...STUBASS... PS...I AM SURE THAT THERE ARE THOSE MORE QUALIFIED TO SPEAK ON THIS SUBJECT THAT YOUR HUMBLE "ANGELMASTER"!!!

Hey Gang:
Boy oh boy - thanks for the kind words from all here at the Forum, especially Stu, Medusa9e,Jim, Stephanie and mi compadre Ralph Terrana.

When I discovered Soulful Detroit last year, it was quite by accident - I was doing research on Detroit R&B and needed label information. Not only did this wonderful site supply the info I needed but the Forum provided the opportunity to actually communicate with those who share the same passion I do as well as those "who were there" when Detroit was happening - from Dennis Coffey to Babbitt, Ralph Terrana to Mike McLean, Jim Feliciano to StuBass, SisDetroit to Stephanie - just to name a few.

I guess this is my way to say thank you all for allowing me to participate in this wonderful space where memories and knowledge are shared as one.

Best regards to all here at Soulful Detroit,
Kevin Goins - KevGo

Stephanie: It's not that younger musicians can't copy or sound as good as the original musicians that made that sound or style of playing famous. The thing that sets the original musicians apart is that they made that style famous.

Sometimes it's almost impossible to copy a musician because of the difficulty, other times you can copy note for note, but you didn't think it up, your just copying.
An example:The best Chuck Berry sounding guitar player I ever worked with was Rod (Cox)Ritchards that ended up with Rare Earth.

The first show that Babbitt and I played with Chuck Berry was a eyeopener for me.His guitar playing was sloppy,he mis-fretted,during his solos he would turn around and ask Babbitt what song he was singing.
After that first show when I saw how the people just went nuts when he walked out, made me realize that he was truly a legend and no matter how many mistakes he made,he did it FIRST and it was his style that all the rest copied and improved upon.

Rod did Chuck Berry better than Chuck Berry could ever play, but he still didn't think up that style,Chuck did.
So yes if your good enough you can mimick a certain style and even improve it BUT it takes something special to be the first.
Lynn

man I loved all of the answers you guys gave!!!!
KevGo I am so impressed by your musical knowledge Im astounded. Hey Lynn I like your take on the explanation you gave me. I want to make a statement I have never seen a guy make guitar playing look as easy as Keith Richard. This guy can have a cigarette hanging from his mouth and
it looks like his fingers are not moving and he is playing. I have never seen anyone look so effortless as Keith Richards I sometimes wonder if there is someone playing behind them and he is just standing there..like when Elvis had another voice singing behind him. Is it me or doesnt Richards look effortless.......?
Stephanie

PS Thanks for your explanation too Stubasss..I gotta kiss up to the head angel person you know

WOW....
That was my initial 'impression' left, as I began to scroll down in the vast enclave of such 'soulful' respondant 'notables' this discussion site had been 'gifted' with, but in all reality, I was just simply 'struck' in awe by the wealth of information this one particular 'gentleman' seemingly was willing to share right here-- and yes that's him, he goes by the name of... 'KevGo'.

David and Ralph, when the 'man' has something to add, listen... rest assured, what Kevin has to say, it's all good....

Kevin, my friend, you know that I've always said that you are the 'man', on this site!

But I feel 'honored' to have been allowed to have even the slightest repore with you from time to time, here on soulfuldetroit.com. You are like a brilliant 'gem' on this site, and, as our 'mentor', we thank you... and we say that with all due respect, and all due sincereity.

Kevin Goins, thank you for all that you have shared with us, of your thoughts, and of your time. But most important, thank you for being a there for us, as a real friend.

Now StuBass--
And what more 'good' can one say of you, that hasn't been already been said, many times, on soulfuldetroit.com.

You are known as 'the' very one who could enlightened us, with a sudden grin, or with a smile when this forum, at times... gets us down, you pick us right back up.

But it is your very response efforts, and the sudden manner in which you would seemingly 'indicate' with us with your way of thinking, well... that is your 'signature'.

And it is your quick 'wit' and your 'charisma' we find it to be your very own personal 'charm'.

StuBass, right here, never stop being who you really are. At soulfuldetroit.com, you have been the 'soul' inspiration, the very 'inspiration' we have found to be... there, in you.

Just want to say I like hanging around here too Medusa.

I don't post often but I learn a lot by lurking around and reading. The only negative thing I have to say is that the posts in ALL CAPS are very very hard on the eyes for me to read. Also netiquette dictates that all caps is considered SHOUTING and we all know what our momma's said about shouting.

I don't mean to offend. It is just a constructive
comment/suggestion please. I e-mailed this to the moderators some time ago, but I guess they did not feel it was worthy of mention. But now that I am more comfortable and see what a nice group of folks you all are I hope you take this in the spirit it was given.

Thanks and keep up the great posts everyone.

Douglasm,
No sir... rather it goes more along like this,

"Stu, Kevin, Douglasm, Ralph, Eli, Sue, and everybody else on this thread", the fact is, I've been reading all of your wonderful posts, long before I even decided 'the nerve' to get inside into this magnificent 'soulful' discussion forum, first, from an observer's standpoint!

Douglasm, my friend, along with those I have mentioned (along with many others besides), you have added much 'dimension' and 'familiarity' into the course of this 'revered' discussion we have seeming (now) 'ingrained' ourselves unto, and we thank you... your 'contributions' on these discussions, have only 'opened' my 'eyes' and my 'mind' up to the 'next level', of that, to which I am indebted to you, and everyone here, as well.

Douglasm, this end 'quote' would only best sum it up--

HE WHO ADDS NOT TO HIS LEARNING DIMINISHES IT.
THE TALMUD

That there, my friend... is the 'very' reason why we have all 'gathered' here as one, right here, at this same 'ole place....

STUBASS I'd like to go back to one of the topics within this one... (LOL) the one about how hard it is to play some of the great musicians parts...
As far as bass is concerned, I immediately thought about Rocco Prestia's parts within Tower of Power... I love his intricate rythms parts but he plays so effortlessly while just watching him gives me cramps in the forearm!!!! I have some pro-bass player friends who tell me they are afraid of some of his lines... and can't even imagine play a whole 2 hour show doing nothing but Rocco's lines...
What's your take on that...? LOL

HEY WONDERB: THANKS FOR THE QUESTION...I'LL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER!!!...YOU MENTION A GREAT IN ROCCO (HOPE HE'S DOING WELL FOLLOWING HIS LIVER TRANSPLANT)!!!...GUYS LIKE ROCCO...LARRY GRAHAM...BABBITT...FREDDIE WASHINGTON...AND ALL THE PAST GREATS LIKE JAMERSON COULD PLAY FOR DAYS...AND NEVER GET TIRED...JUST LIKE GREAT ATHLETES IN TOP CONDITION!!!...THE TOUGHEST PART OF PLAYING TO ME...WAS ALWAYS MY RIGHT HAND...TENDER FINGERS AND ALL...AND YOU HAVE TO DEVELOP SOME REAL MEAN CALLOUSES TO PLAY FOR HOURS LIKE THAT!!!...I PICKED UP A BASS ONE TIME SEVERAL YEARS AGO...NOT HAVING PLAYED IN OVER 10 YEARS...SITTING IN WITH A GROUP THAT ASKED ME TO...AND BY THE END OF ONE TUNE...MY FINGERS WERE BURNING AND THROBBING!!!...LEFT HAND...JUST KEEP MOVING!!!...IMAGINE JAMERSONS RIGHT INDEX FINGER (THE ONLY ONE HE USED) DURING A LONG SET!!!...I USED TWO FINGERS...AND ON OCCASSION...THREW IN MY RIGHT RING FINGER IF I WAS PLAYING A "REALLY" FAST RIFF!!!...THATS WHY THESE GUYS ARE "PRO'S"...AND THATS WHAT THEY'RE GETTING PAID TO DO...SO THEY GOTTA BE PREPARED TO DO IT!!!...HOPE THAT HELPS...STUBASS

Yeah Stubass... I know what you mean... I play the flute and if you don't play consistently, when you pick up your instrument your lips will start to 'move' by themselves (LOL) after five minutes LOL No control...
But I think even among huge players Rocco is an enigma... (J.Jamerson and his 'hook' too- can't play these lines with one finger!) he plays with two fingers yet his lines are so frantic you wonder how he keeps the timing and how after all these years his stamina is still up... plus he's back onstage after getting that liver transplant and although I missed him the last time TOP played over here (a month ago) I was told that he was is old usual self... Talk about a miracle... last year in June his days seemed counted...
Thanks for your insight!

WONDERRB: PERHAPS I CAN EXPAND A BIT SINCE I ONLY TALKED ABOUT THE RIGHT HAND (FINGERS) IN BASS PLAYING...AND SINCE YOU ASKED ABOUT THE "PHYSICAL ASPECT"...I ALWAYS VIEWED THE RIGHT HAND (FINGERS) AS THE "PHYSICAL" HAND..AND THE LEFT HAND...AS THE "CEREBRAL"(MENTAL) HAND...PLACING YOUR LEFT HAND IN VARIOUS POSITIONS TO HIT A DESIRED NOTE BASED ON VARIOUS HAND POSITIONS...MOVING IN VARIABLE TIME...THINKING OF THE PROPER NOTATIONS (BE IT CHORD PATTERNS OR READING WRITTEN NOTES)FOR THE DESIRED MELODIC RESULT!!!...IT IS THE INTERACTION OF THE RIGHT AND LEFT HAND WHEN PLAYING...AND HOW WELL ONE COORDINATES THOSE TWO...WHICH SEPERATES THE GOOD FROM THE GREAT PLAYERS!!!...THATS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I LIKE ABOUT THE GAME OF GOLF!!!...COORDINATING HAND AND BODY MOVEMENTS TO ACHIEVE A DESIRED SWING RESULT...ALTHOUGH IN GOLF...IT IS DESIRABLE...ONCE YOU HAVE GROOVED YOUR SWING...TO *NOT* THINK ABOUT THE ACTION...BUT LET INSTINCT TAKE OVER AS YOU SWING!!!...VERY FEW BASS PLAYERS...OR MUSICIANS IN GENERAL CAN PLAY ON INSTINCT...WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT THE NOTES THEY ARE PLAYING...(A GENIUS LIKE CHARLIE PARKER PERHAPS BEING THE EXCEPTION TO THAT RULE)!!!...IN PLAYING BASS...ONE MUST ALWAYS THINK ABOUT WHAT THE LEFT HAND IS PLAYING...AND KEEP THE RIGHT HAND FINGERS MOVING AT SUCH A PACE TO PULL IT ALL OFF...IN PROPER TIME!!!...HOPE I DIDN'T CONFUSE YOU BY BEING SO TECHNICAL...BUT THATS WHAT THE GREAT PLAYERS ARE CONSTANTLY DOING!!!...REGARDS...STU

Stu....
....You play bass. Do you play any other insturments, and if so
1) is it hard to switch back and forth? I play at guitar, and the difference in fret sizes on the bass and 6 string played hell with me, and
2) if so, does one help the other, or is it a handicap in the long run?
