Thanks Kevin. Understand you were involved in radio in Rochester. Did you ever cross paths with Dan Guilfoyle. I believe he was the manager for a radio station in Rochester.

He told me that the urban station in Rochester was owned by a lady from Jamaica. Can you confirm. I'm talking around the late eighties.

Danny Guilfoyle is one of my "mentors" & was the reason why I became a radio DJ/exec. as well as a record collector. He's currently the VP/General Sales Manager for WVOR-FM/WHAM-AM in Rochester, a position he worked like hell to earn.

In 1979, Danny hosted a doo-wop/oldies show on WVOR-FM called "The Glory That Was Grease" every Sunday night for three (later four)hours (his co-host, WVOR'S Assistant GM Larry White, was on the show from 1979 to 1981). That's where I got what I called my "record collector's education". In 1982 his stepson Rick Sutter & I attended Monroe High School & introduced me to Danny at our National Honor Society induction. Danny invited me to visit WVOR and encouraged me to apply for a job there, which I did. Three days later I get a phone call from Larry White who wanted to hire me as a "tape operator" for Danny's show! I was sixteen years old and had ZERO experience in the biz, but I said yes (with Mom & Dad's permission)and within three weeks I was behind the boards at WVOR-FM running the tapes for Danny Guilfoyle. I worked with Danny & company for almost eight years until I moved to NYC in 1990.

To answer the question regarding WDKX-FM, the Langston family founded the station and it made it's broadcast debut in late 1973. Andrew Langston, who started as a broadcaster and became a wealthy owner of Langston Insurance, owns the station while his wife is the co-owner and son Andre Marcel (Langston) is the Program Director. Whether they are from Jamaica I'm not sure.

Thanks for bringing up Danny's name - he's a great guy who taught me more about music than any college or university could.

KEVIN: I CAN TESTIFY THAT DAN GUILFOYLE IS ONE COOL CAT. I MET HIM INITIALLY IN THE LATE SEVENTIES. WE HIT IT OFF IMMEDIATELY, HE PROBABLY PICKED UP THAT I WAS A GENUINE MUSIC LOVER.

Soulpuss:
Danny is a genuine guy who has a MASSIVE record collection (takes up his entire attic, basement, den, and any space where a blank wall once existed - his wife Carolyn draws the line at the living room, kitchen and bedroom! :) )and is a music lover/historian. Like I said, he taught me so much about the history of pop music and, more importantly, to be proud of the contributions people of color have made to music and society as a whole.
