It may have been members of the Soul Stirrers.
back when I was doing things at A&M, for Atlantic Starr,
I was in Herb Alpert's office shooting the breeze, as he loved music talk and reminiscing, he pulled out some old photos and there were some that were shot at the session for Wonderful World, as he co wrote the song with Lou Adler.
I believe the session was done at the old and short lived Keen Studio on 3rd street in L.A.
There was a pic of Herb "directing" Sam during the vocal session and pics of the musicians and singers and they looked like the Soul Stirrers.

Whey Herb at?

Is he taking it easy on some beach now that he and Jerry Moss sold A&M to one of the biggies.

His "Rise" is one of the last instrumentals that I can think of that made the charts. What happened to instrumentals? Whey instrumentals at?

The session was done at Keen Productions in Hollywood on March 2,1959 and the single was released on April 14, 1960 as Keen 8-2112. The producer was Bumps Blackwell and Rene Hall wrote the charts. The only session personnel I could come up with were Cliff White on guitar and Adolphus Alsbrook on bass. White was Cooke's long-time road guitarist. As for Alsbrook, I've heard from a number of West Coast music people that he had a sleeping disorder and would often suddenly fall asleep during sessions.

Soulpuss:
Herb is still in the biz...After he & Jerry Moss sold A&M to PolyGram in 1989 for a near-whopping five hundred million dollars (gee, I wish my last name was Alpert or Moss...), Herb recorded a few more albums for the label (the hip-hop flavored "North On South Street" and the torch-driven "Midnight Sun")until 1994. In that year, he & Jerry formed the Almo Sounds label (currently distributed by Universal Music Group via Geffen Records) and have enjoyed having successful groups on the label such as Garbage. Herb records sporadically for the label and tours on occasion (saw him three years ago at Town Hall in NYC - great show).

As far as the subject of instrumentals, that's another story for another time.
