N the 60's there was a group called themselves
(hope I spell it right) the Volumes, they had a couple of very nice songs out: "Y got to give her Love" and my favorite was "There's got to be a way to love you"
Does anyone remember them? their whereabouts or if they're doing anything?...And there was a song put out (way back, I believe it was late 60's or 70's) "If you love me, really, really love me, let it happen darling I wont care" I thought it was Len Barry, but I guess not. Can anyone give any Nfo on that?

Mmmm - I also have a scan of a great article about them from the Michigan Chronicle, but at 92K, it's too large to upload without blowing Lowell's fuses! :o(

I can compress the article if you like... I should still be legible.. and I can handle 92k- maybe squeeze it to 40k. kegtapper@brew-meister.com

Nice one Ritchie.
Eddie Union and Elijah Davis are both in Detroit -Larry Wright is around too; Clay might know where he is. Larry cut a solo 45 called Sweet Sweet Kisses.
They originaly recorded for the Chex label, the first (rare) pressings of I Love You are mis-credited to the Valumes. They then joined Harry Balk for the 45s on Americam Arts and Inferno.

I sold Eddie Union a house a few years ago. A really nice person. He said he had a choice between singing and being a father and chose the latter. Worked at Great Lakes Steel for 30+ years and had a great life. He is married to a wonderful woman, Laverne and lives about 15 minutes away from me in the country.

Thanks for the great up-date on Eddie. It's nice to know the guy's life worked out.

I have recollections of the Volumes on Detroit labels - Chex, Karen, Inferno, & Impact. Also their `Balk` releases on Twirl & American Arts. But does anyone know if any of the Volumes on Astra, Big Top, Ivy, Jaguar, Jubilee, Old Town & Times Square are the Detroit group? Thanks Keith
By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.42) on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 12:27 pm: |
Keith - the Volumes on Ivy are a different group- that's a late fifties New York label.
The group on Jaguar might be connected to the one on Ivy as Jaguar, again, is a fifties NY label.
Times Square and Astra were essentially reissue labels, Times Square occasionally would issue
rehearsal tapes of groups who were colleactable so
it might well be the Detroit group. Astra was
based in Pittsburgh and picked up a few odd Detroit tracks - I'd have to do a bit of digging
before I could hazard a guess either way.
I'll check my files to see how much info. I have on the others.

Keith & Joe,
There was an Astra label in Detroit in the 60's but I don't know of a Volumes 45 on it.
Do you have any details?
Graham

Graham,
I know of a Volumes on the Astra Label(no.1020)called 'gotta give her Love/I cant live without you'.
mel.
By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.42) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 02:04 pm: |
Keith, the Volumes on Jubilee and Old Town are
the Detroit group.
I don't have anything on a Big Top release for them - what info. do you have ? Big Top was
the outlet for dozens of Harry Balk productions so it looks as if it is the same group but I'd
like more info. so I can incorporate it into
a Volumes discography.
Davie
Incidentally the Volumes on Jaguar go back as far
as 1954 - six years before the Detroit group
were formed.

Graham, as Davie Gordon mentioned, the Astra label that picked up Gotta Give Her Love is the one out of Pittsburgh (it's black), not Detroit (which is yellow). Copies of the single on that label seem to command a premium because they are much tougher to find than the American Arts release and they are all on colored vinyl--I've seen both red and yellow copies, though there may be others as well. Presumably Astra grabbed it after it became such a big hit in Detroit.
I've never seen a Volumes 45 on Big Top, and the discography I have for the label doesn't show any, either--the closest name is The Visions, who had two singles. But there are a few missing numbers in the catalog, so I suppose it's possible. I also don't know their Old Town release--I assume it's early?

Gang,
I notice a lot about "Gotta Give Her Love". How about the flip on the Americam Arts copy: "I Can't Live Without You". Fantastic cut! I think Ritchie & Graham will concur.

ASTRA Records...I also have a 45 by Clara Hardy (of Jackpot Records) on Astra "Call My Name". The Volumes also cut a line of 45`s on Jubilee Records. One of my alltime fave Detroit groups without a doubt.

Hi Marc,
Their Astra release is on a different label to the Clara Hardy 45. Mel just sent me a scan of The Volumes 45 - thanks Mel.
BTW - the above scan of their Karen 45 has a great flip-side too.

The other side to the Impact 45 (scanned above) is the one that gets played - in the UK.
Mel - your email isn't working... thanks again for the other scan.
