Sorry Sis can't agree about Its a shame no one can do that song by G.C. Cameron
By SteveS (68.41.246.95) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 09:08 am: |
Actually, Johnny Ingram did the heavy lifting on It's A Shame last night, and, no slight to GC, but he was absolutely incredible!
By Craig (64.12.97.7) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 10:11 am: |
Maxi Priest is one of those young singers with limited talent like Ashanti.
By Soul Sister (65.43.153.219) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 10:17 am: |
Maxi Priest is one fine RastaMan! I agree Sis woooooeeeee.......

I agree with you there steve its just that with Maxi's part it just did not do it for me
By BankHouseDave (195.93.50.9) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 12:31 pm: |
Craig: If Maxi's a young singer there's hope for us all. He didn't just land on this planet. Over the last twenty years, he's been a busy man, including work with Roberta Flack and Lee Ritenour, as well as chart hits with Shabba Ranks and Shaggy.
By medusa9e (66.73.11.62) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 01:06 pm: |
4 some reason, I can't compare Maxi Priest 2 Ashanti...sorry. I got N2 him when he did
"I Just Wanna Be Close To You". He has a voice and can sing, he does a lot of Raggae style music like the (Bad Boys') group Inner Circle.
It's hard 2 compare singers & musicians, they all (if they're good) have their own way of expressing themselves musically and they all deserve 2 B applauded.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 01:25 pm: |
I have to admit I have been out of the current musical loop. I don't watch videos or listen to the radios. I am an old fashion old-timer. I have never heard Ashanti, and I don't know most of the names of today.
Prior to this Funk Brothers show, I had never heard of MAXI, and apparently he has been out there for over 20 years. That just goes to show you how "square" I am.
But last night, having seen and heard the brother for the first time, I noticed his long dread lock braids, saw some of his moves across the stage, and notice his dress. This indicated that he may have some Raggae blood in him. However, that man sang his heart out on "It's A Shame", and the MotownSound-PhillySound was kickin it. I was on my way to the ladies room when he came up. But stopped dead in my tracks at the door with the groove of the music and his fantastic voice. The ushers and I were outside the door groovin back with Maxi. The brother has soul, charisma. GC Cameron did not come to my mind at all during that performance. And during the bridge/interlude, the band had us dancing in the halls. I was just amazed at this great band and singer connecting to one another.
I decided not to leave this fantastic performer, and went back to my seat when he starting singing Marvin Gaye songs. I LOVE MARVIN GAYE. Maxi, performed his butt off on those songs. I really appreciated his rendition. I give him his due, as I listened and enjoyed the music while he was performing. He should sing soul sings all the time.
Mel&ThenSome & Ritchie - From London England comes this great performer named "Maxi Priest."
By Sue (205.188.209.16) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 01:25 pm: |
It took two singers to replicate the part G.C. Cameron did by himself -- Maxi Priest AND Johnny Ingram doing the fine falsetto part -- but it was worthwhile. Maxi conveyed the spirit of the songs well; and the point was to hear the irresistible guitar work throughout ...

I cat agree with the whole Maxi Priest, Joan Osbourne touring with the Funks..its like they might as well add Justin Timberlake and Shaggy...The producers couldnt call D'Angelo or Maxwell??
By Sly fan (67.115.72.52) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 02:58 pm: |
correction: I cant agree..
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 04:18 pm: |
Sly - (smile) I had not heard of Joan Osbourne until the making of the movie in Royal Oak. And I don't know who those people are you just named. I think Maxwell is Gordy's son, right?
But, I would like to know how Allan came upon the idea of hiring Maxi for some of the concerts. Bootsy has to stay. He is cool.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 04:36 pm: |
Honestly speaking, who would you all like to see travel with the Funk Brothers? Name at least 4 acts.
By Nancy (64.12.97.7) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 04:58 pm: |
Bunny Siegler
G.C. Cameron
Darlene Love
Chaka Khan
But I have to keep Joan Osbourne in to still do what becomes of a Broken Heart

OK, let me see... ummmm
Chaka Khan

By ErikT.O. (64.228.108.19) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 05:12 pm: |
I dug Maxi Priest's segment, he didn't sing 'Mercy Mercy Me' in Toronto, though. For those interested, a great reggae version of 'It's A Shame' was recorded a long time ago by the underrated singer Delroy Wilson.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 05:18 pm: |
Actually, the only reggae I've paid attention is Bob Marley and Pete Tosh. I've noticed Ziggy. There was a period of tme in Detroit when reggae was popular.
By Erik (64.228.108.19) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 05:29 pm: |
Well, if you're ever curious about some seriously soulful reggae listening beyond that, might I suggest early Toots & The Maytals, Delroy Wilson, Jacob Miller, maybe Ken Boothe & Alton Ellis as well? All these folks have covered soul songs and their music is very compatible with soul music generally, I promise... as long as you keep your picks pre-80's... The Harder They Come soundtrack is another good sample of great and soul influenced reggae. I've been told Desmond Dekker sings 'Many Rivers To Cross' while Jimmy Cliff is credited, but both have recorded versions of this classic song.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 05:42 pm: |
Thanks Erik, I will check it out. I'm all for "soul influenced" reggae. Maxi had soul last night. There is so much out there, so many singers, I can't keep up with them. I think I gave up after Whitney's Body Guard soundtrack which I loved. I don't take to too many people because I'm set in my ways. :o)
I'm still wondering, what was it that got Maxi on the show with the Funks.
By Sly fan (67.119.52.83) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 06:47 pm: |
Sis Detroit: (Smile) yeah, Joan Osbourne is purely a POP artist and Maxi Preist is a Reggae artist..Berry's son is Rockwell..who had the hit "Somebody's Watching Me" ( I still love that record..). Maxwell is a pretty good, he is a soul artist that has really great showmanship and great songs..Leon Ware has worked very close with Maxwell.
By Sly fan (67.119.52.83) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 06:49 pm: |

Ronald Isley
Dennis Edwards
Syreeta
Tata Vega
Prince
Joe Cocker
Paul Mccartney
Rosie Gaines
William "Bootsy" Collins
Carlos Santana
The O'Jays
Maxwell
D'Angelo
Raphael Saddiq
George Clinton

I met Maxi Priest when (unbeknownst to him or anyone else) he was doing his homework to work with the Funk Brothers several years ago. He attended a show with Martha Reeves/Vandellas and the Four Tops in Brooklyn...He knew nothing about HDH and was astonished to find out that those guys wrot so many of the songs...He was hanging out back stage nd asking questions for more than an hour before I found out who he was.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 08:11 pm: |
Sly Fan - (LOL) Thanks! Now you see how much I know about these singers. It's just like me asking my Mother if she has heard of GC Camerson. She would have no idea who he is.
If Paul Mccartney were to be on stage with the Funk Brothers they would have to have the show at an arena.
MelandThenSome - I would love to hear your choices.
By David Meikle (62.252.128.6) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 08:17 pm: |
Sis
I think Mel would do some justice.
Some suggestions, so far, leave me COLD.
David (Detroit through and through)
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 08:28 pm: |
DMeikle - I understand about Detroit through and through. We still have great singers here. They didn't all move to California. Actually, none of the featured vocalist are from Detroit. Delbert is from Detroit, but he sings background. He was lead on Shotgun last night.
As far as backup musicians, there were two horn players from Detroit. The rest, I believe are from Philly.
So, DMeikle, be partial, name the artist from Detroit whom you would like to see traveling with the Funk Brothers.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 08:32 pm: |
Actually, I know some vocalist here who would floor you. Detroit can still sing.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 08:43 pm: |
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas on Heatwave.
Dennis Edwards on Cloud Nine.
Original Marvelettes on Don't Mess with Bill.
The Miracles on You Really Got a Hold on Me.

Patti LaBelle
Al Green
Whitney Houston
Bobby Womack

I thought and Joan and Maxi did a really good job with the Funks. It's smart thinking to mix the younger entertainers with the older. You end up with a more mixed crowd age-wise than you normaly would get. Then everyone sees someone they usually wouldn't be exposed to. So we all win.
By john c (12.2.233.107) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 09:51 pm: |
I agree with Lynn. My friend wasn't interested in seeing the movie until he found out Ben Harper was in it. The vocalists are the backing musicians on this tour!
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 19, 2003 - 11:07 pm: |
It sure was packed last night. I hope the show continues to have sell out shows.
DMeikle - All of the artist who have been around Detroit all of these years, have played with the Funk Brothers at one time or another within the City. Some of those artist, have travelled to out of town shows with individual Funk Brothers. Although the Funks were not in the light did not stop them from performing.
By Eli (64.12.97.7) on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 12:47 am: |
If at all possible, I would love to see and hear all of the original artists who recorded the songs perform with the Funks.
Otherwise one of the most underrated and underappreciated singers on the planet is Bunny Sigler. He has phenomenal range and can handle
any vocal chore with the utmost of confidence and soul and is one hell of a performer who brings the house down everywhere he performs.
Otherwise if it isnt broken dont fix it!!!
By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 09:10 pm: |
Sis:
Since you have now fallen under the charismatic spell of Maxi Priest (whom I met in 1992 and is a very personable & gentle spirit), may I suggest you check out his greatest hits CD called "The Best Of Me". Released in 1991 (prior to his duets with Roberta & Shaggy), this shows off Maxi at his best - combining reggae, pop/R&B with lyrics of love (found & lost) and happiness. The CD includes his #1 USA hit "Close To You" (1990), his first international smash "Wild World" (the Cat Stevens cover)and other tunes I think you will enjoy ("Should I", "Let Me Know", "The Woman In You", "In The Springtime" & "Just A Little Bit Longer").
Have fun at the CD store!

By Sly fan (67.115.72.90) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 11:25 am: |
Sis Detroit: Yeah..GC should be on that tour more than Priest..especially for "Its a Shame". Its like Adam Ant doing "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" having Maxi and Joan in these shows..A bad dream at least..
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 11:35 am: |
Thanks for info KevGo! I'll listen to some of those tunes.
Sly Fan - Joan Osborn was on the soundtrack, and every song she sang the audience really liked. She brought home "Broken Hearted"
I've never seen GC perform solo, just with the Spinners. He did great. As I said, I love Marvin, but when Maxi was singing Marvin's songs, I captured Maxi's ability, style, and how he carried the song. He did great. He delivered Marvin's songs in his way, which I enjoyed. I don't compare them with the original if they can deliver.
How do you like Chaka Khan's version of "What's Goin on?"
By Sly fan (67.115.72.90) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 11:39 am: |

By Steve Litos (209.100.86.4) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 04:17 pm: |
Sly fan - Did you get a chance to see the Funk Brothers perform on this tour or see the movie?
Joan Osborne & the Funks bring down the house with "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted". It's the centerpiece song of both the movie & the current concert tour. Allan Slutsky even introduced it as one of the greatest soul performances before they performed the song.
Maxi Priest had the unenviable job of performing Marvin Gaye's songs on the tour and he really did a good job with it.
I too would like to see some of the Motown acts reunite with the Funk Brothers, but right now it's time for the Funk Brothers to bask in the glory for a while. In the DVD extras, Martha Reeves states that her dream is to play with the Funk Brothers again. Maybe they'll get a tour together in the future. Who knows?
By Sly fan (67.115.72.126) on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 05:22 pm: |
Steve: No I didnt, but I KNOW and LIVE Soul music and those two names dont come to mind when I think of soul music or the Legendary Funk Brothers..
I will not be posting any replies for a few days, out of respect to Cholly Atkins and Nina Simone. Thank You and Peace.
