DRIVING TO WORK TODAY...LISTENING TO MY NEW "RHYTHM...LOVE...AND SOUL" CD...I FOUND IT INTERESTING COMPARING THE VOCAL QUALITIES OF THE VARIOUS ARTISTS TO WHAT THEY SOUNDED LIKE WHEN THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS WERE RELEASED MANY YEARS AGO!!!...ONE EXAMPLE...DENNIS EDWARDS ON THE DENNIS EDWARDS TEMPTATIONS REVIEW MEDLEY OF OLD TEMPTS SONGS THAT HE SANG LEAD ON!!!...HIS VOCALIZATIONS SOUNDED SORT OF "FAT"...IN THAT DENNIS HAS PUT QUITE A BIT OF WEIGHT ON...AND I WONDER IF THAT FACTOR AFFECTS HIS VOCAL QUALITY...ALMOST LIKE HIS NEWLY ACQUIRED "JOWLS" MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT TO ENNUNCIATE HIS WORDS!!!...JAMES BROWN...SAME THING...ALMOST SOUNDS INDENTULOUS (WITHOUT TEETH) THESE DAYS WHEN HE SINGS!!!...SOME OF THE ARTISTS SOUND VERY SIMILAR TO THE EARLY DAYS...ARETHA...EVEN EDWIN STARR (RIP)...BUT SOME CLEARLY SHOW...OR SOUND THEIR AGE AND PRESENT PHYSICAL STATUS!!!...ANY COMMENTS ON THIS???...STU

I was saying the same thing to myself the other day about some of the same artists.

Lord knows Stubass, I don't look or feel the way I did 30 years ago...I know what you mean.I saw James Brown last year & he was the best I had seen him in 25 years.Part of his problem had been that he had teeth implants about 20 years ago & it sure affected his singing & talking.I guess he got a better oral surgeon & got the problem corrected.James Brown will be here in Orlando May 3rd at the House of Blues & will be his 72nd birthday!!

SADLY STU AGE CATCHES UP WITH US ALL,SINGERS ARE NO DIFFERENT,WHEN WE HEAR AN ARTIST THAT SOUNDS EVEN 75% AS GOOD AS THEY ONCE DID IT'S CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION WITH THAT THE VOICE GOES THROUGH DURING THE COURSE OF A LONG CAREER.

R&B, how true! Some do age better than others,
and, vocally, some are even sounding just as
good if not better--Dee Dee Sharp sounds fantastic. So does Barbara Mason! Both women
look good too.

HEY ALL: I DO REMEMBER SINATRA MAINTAINING HIS VOCAL QUALITIES WELL INTO HIS 70'S...BUT AT SOME POINT...HE BAGAN HAVING DIFFICULTY REMEMBERING LYRICS!!!...STU

but you know what sometimes they sound better
with age.eddie holman, jerry butler.lord
knows the manhattans, billy paul,i really think
the older diana got the less whiney she sounds.
but as we know,as we get older we change.then too
there some young ones not sounding too good
themselves so..............p.s smokie and
levi can still hold their own.

YOU MENTIONED SOME GOOD ONES "ANGEL"...AND I FOR ONE WILL TESTIFY AS TO THE VOCAL RANGE OF EDDIE HOLMAN...HE STILL SOUNDS GREAT!!!...IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO HEAR LEVI ONCE HE HOPEFULLY RETURNS TO THE STAGE...BECAUSE HIS SINGING STYLE REQUIRES A LOT OF VOCAL "ENERGY"!!!...STUBASS

Many artists who just keep on working, mellow with the years. Others who "retire" and make a comeback years later, may find that age has caught up with them...

If DR, Sam, or Marvin were alive today, I would say "I am so happy they are still singing in their 60's, they sure sound so great. I love the sound of their voices. They don't sound as they did when they were "young", but they sound better than any "young" singer out here."

Since Aretha mentions Dennis Edwards in her book, as having put her on "cloud nine" it would have been great for the both of them to have sang a song together on PBS. (I'm going to tell a joke now, so dont jump on me. I love them both.) If they had sang a song togethre, there would have been two tons of fun. :o)

i saw david ruffin and eddie kendrick at
a club in atlanta a little before david died.
and eddie voice was a little weaker, but
david could still sing. i remember thinking
his voice hasn't changed a bit.

Yes, Eddie's voice was weak, but he was so cute and sweet. I love seeing him going out into the audience and sing to the ladies. A great guy. I miss him so much.

I GUESS THAT'S WHAT THROAT CANCER DOES TO YOU SIS!!!...SAME WITH SAMMY DAVIS JR...HIS VOICE WAS GETTING WEAKER AND WEAKER LEADING UP TO HIS DEATH!!!...EXCUSE ME NOW...TIME FOR A CIGARETTE!!!...AM I A FOOL OR WHAT???...BUT I'M WORKING ON IT!!!...STU(LARYNX STILL IN TACT)BASS

Stu, cut Dennis Edwards some slack. With all due respect to Sinatra, Frank didn't sing "Papa was a Rolling Stone," "Shakey Ground" and "Psychedellic Shack" for 30 plus years like Edwards. Frank crooned them easy listening songs, less wear and tear on the vocal chords, dontcha think?

YOU MAKE A FINE POINT RD!!!...AND I'M NOT NECESSARILY REFERRING TO THE DIFFICULTY OF THE RESPECTIVE MATERIAL...EVEN THOUGH DENNIS SANG IN A MANNER THAT MANY ARTISTS JUST DIDN'T HAVE THE VOCAL ANATOMY AND LUNG POWER TO DO...AND SINATRA'S PHRASEING HAS BEEN BUTCHERED BY MULTITUDES OF "WANNABEES"...BUT THE 70 YEAR OLD SINATRA...SOUNDED A LOT MORE LIKE THE 40 YEAR OLD SINATRA...VERSUS THE 50+ (DON'T KNOW HIS EXACT AGE) SOME DENNIS EDWARDS SOUNDS LIKE THE 30 YEAR OLD DENNIS!!!...THAT WAS MY ONLY POINT!!!...AND DESPITE ALL THAT...IT'S GREAT TO SEE DENNIS APPEARING ON STAGE AND SINGING THOSE GREAT SOUL STANDARDS!!!...I ONLY HOPE HE WATCHES HIS HEALTH...AS WE WERE UNFORTUNATLY REMINDED TODAY BY THE NEWS OF LUTHER VANDROSS PRESENT CONDITION!!!...STU

stubass remember you daddy angel duties.
health and night life does play
a part in one's vocal abilities when they get older. just think the amount of singing that
has to be done.(the stress on the vocal chords)
oh as i recall seeing eddie and david at a
club.david was the outgoing one. between
sets in the audience chatting with us.eddie
stayed in the dressing room.let me put say
again, david was a very friendly man.

By the way, if Levi does retire from the road, there is a guy in Philly named Art ?? who is an exact clone of Levi.
I once recorded him on an "Ian Levine Type" of high eenergy track featuring a medley of Tops hits.
I hated the track but Art is a master at out Levi-ing Levi!!

Art should have auditioned for Allen to sing with the Funk Brother's tour, and sing "Bernadette."

remember that motory city thing ian levine did , i hated the background music ,computerized drums etc ,lacked depth , but one group stood out vocaly
from the rest and i was a joy to listen too ,bobby taylor and the vancouvers ,i would pay good money to see them ,his voice is like fine wine ,it realy has matured over the years
