THEY DID A VERSION OF "I'LL BE SWEETER TOMORROW (THAN I WAS YESTERDAY)/ "A WOMAN, A LOVER, A FRIEND" ON KING.
WHO ARE THESE DUDES?

The Dapps I know of worked for James Brown and were a White group led by bassist Tim Drummond.I'm not familiar with the above tune but since its on King I would expect it to be the same group.

The Dapps was also the name of Johnnie Mae Matthews' backing group in the late '50s. Made up of some guys who had recorded at Fortune and a couple others. If anyone is interested I can dig out my notes and provide a lineup.

Would this have been the same group that recorded for George Braxton's Brax label as the Five Dapps?

And this footnote:
When James Brown revamped his band and brought in young cats like Bootsy & Catfish Collins, Frank Waddy, Hasaan & Jassan, in March 1970, they were called 'The New Dapps.' That never went any further than a name scribbled on a tape box, and their name was changed to The J.B.'s.

HW,I do remember James Brown referring to them as "the New Dapps" the first time I saw Bootsy & them on stage.Bootsy, Catfish and a couple of the other guys rode in my '59 Ford Galaxie from the Orlando Sportstadium to the Downtowner Motor Inn because JB did not allow certain "behavior" on the bus. They were really cool guys but I wasn't surprised that they didn't last a long time with JB because he was strict & for good reason.

I seem to remember a story (most likely from a Babbit thread or some H. Weinger liner notes )
that after the mass band defection around 1970, James Brown was set to bring Tim Drummond into his main band, but Drummond's military service prevented it from happening and that may have led to taking a chance on the "new Dapps"/JBs. The rest, as they say, is history.
The Dapps did back James Brown on the great single "I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me)".
Tony's story makes me jealous. That must have been a trip in more ways than one!
Regards,
Ken

Bobby Byrd really got the new band in shape FAST.Ken, that sounds close to what went down cause I know JB liked Drummond.I really love Bobby Byrd & Momi-O,Vicki Anderson.Vicki use to worry about me,my brother Randy and friend John driving on my bald tires to the shows in Tampa & Jax.

I'm no James Brown expert but weren't there a few King singles around '68 credited to Alfred Ellis
and the Dapps ?
Ken, about Tim Drummond. He was working in
Nashville in the early seventies on Sound Stage 7.
I think he went on to work with one of Neil Young's band (the Stray Gators ?)
