Absoulutely not!! Ugene's real name is Bily Jackson (not thate Billy Jackson)
Dozier was a nom de plume.

Sorry to contradict you Mr. Eli BUT G Dozier was his real name (or so he told me in Vegas a few years back).
When he quit Philly & headed across to Detroit, he thought that taking the name of a (then) hot Philly studio guy, would get him into the Det studios. It did. He was soon working in the smaller studio's, using BILLY the KID (i.e. Billy Jackson) as his 'local' name. From there he got into Motown and stayed working for them for a few years (not too successful, though one of his compositions was included on a late released Marvelettes LP -- but as it's credited to Dozier & ??; most people assume it was Lamont).
Gene & Lamont are NOT related though.
After Motown he headed out to LA and hooked up to make a rare & expensive NS cut on RENESS.
Then came the funk hit (recorded with the old Ike Turner band) and his Mercury outings.
Later of course he was highly successful at SOLAR.

I hate to contradict the contridictions but that was not the case andhe never worked for Motown and the Dozier on that record was Lamont. Sorry.

JSmith: that Motown song is "Too Many Tears, Too Many Times" from the Full Bloom album, the song is credited to: Ugene Lloyd Dozier, William Stevenson and Ivy Hunter. The Billy Jackson Eli's referring to is a different guy.

He certainly was 'Billy the Kid' who worked (and got name checked) on a number of 60's Detroit recordings.
I will have to look up my article on him & post the details of which tracks he worked on.
He gave me chapter & verse on cuts he sang background on, producers he studied under and other writers he collaborated with at Motown, etc.
He could have been lying to me but the facts he gave me were very detailed (his spell in Detroit was around the mid 60's).

Sorry to labour the point Bobby BUT.....
one of last things GD worked on in Philly was Orlon's "Envy". He moved to Detroit in Dec 65 & worked initially at Motown. Sang back up on "Uptight" and co-wrote a song that Marvellettes cut -- it was eventually included on their 1970 LP 'Return of...' I believe (will look it up if anyone wants me to).
Fell out with Motown guys & moved across to Gold World. Worked here with Holidays ("Love You Forever"), Pat Lewis ("Lets Get Together", "No Baby No") & as stated Theresa Lindsey. Worked a lot with Babbit at GW he told me.
Then he moved to LA and cut the Groovettes for Reness, then Lorenzo Manley on his 45 (B of which was "Swoop Down On You" -- this actually features GD's voice not Lorenzo's; LM only sang on A side) & Frankie Karl & Dreams.
Back to Philly to work on Neptune sides (Vibrations, etc) then on Atlantic act Philly sessions, etc.

JSmith: I mentioned the album the Marvelettes song appeared on in a previous post. The Return of the ... album was comprised of all Smokey Robinson songs, so it wasn't on that one.

"Too Many Tears, Too Many Times" is from the
Marvelettes' "In Full Bloom"

Thanks for repeating what I already stated, Davie Gordon, we were probably posting at the same time.

What's confusing some is that there was a songwriter whose real name is Billy Jackson who worked out of the Philly area. This BJ has a list of songs in B.M.I., as does Ugene Dozier, who once used the name Billy "the Kid" Jackson, and who also did some things in Philly.

It may not be the same person as there was some confusion in Philly.
J Smith, can you describe what he looks like please??
