He'd a single on Bell about five years earlier.

The Janus single has puzzled me for years - is
"Dirty Work" the Steely Dan song, writers would
be Becker - Fagin ?

Lee David also had a record that's a Northern rarity, "Temptation Keeps Calling My Name", for Columbia (before the Bell recording).

According to Tim Ashibende, Lee got his chance to record the song after arranger Jimmie Haskell heard him singing in an adjoining studio. The song was supposedly intended for Marvin Gaye, but he refused to cut it and Lee got a chance at it.

His Bell recording is a pretty good take on the Impressions' tune "Gypsy Woman".

Best,

Mark

Mark,
a mate of mine named his son after Lee David after being blown away by 'Temptation is calling my name'.
He stated he would way back in 73/4 after hearing the track at the Casino.
Well,obviously I thought,yeah,right.
Low and behold in the mid 1980's his good wife gave him a son and he duly named him Lee David followed by his surname.

Mark- How was it intended for Marvin?? Why would he be recording with Haskell in NY in 67?? It's not a Jobete copyright is it?? Mel- having been on the dancefloor when "Temptation's Calling My Name" has been pumping out, I can understand your mate's passion- awesome side!

Yan--That's the story that Tim mentioned in a blurb at the beginning of the only issue of his fanzine Tracks to Your Mind. I don't know where he got this info from.

I also don't think that Haskell ever worked with Marvin. Who knows what the true story is?

Best,

Mark
