I just received a cd from a cousin of mine that lives in Houston. He is one baaaad bass player and his name is David McKay. His brother is Al McKay (also my cousin) (Think...where have you heard that name from before????).
Anyway, this cd is called, "Word Of Mouth". Look, this guy is the Jimmy Hendrix of bass. Anybody got any inside info on him? I'm going to do a little homework on the net (using Google). He played for Weather report, right? I dig this cat !!!!

Jaco's story is tragic - it's short and ends very badly. He's much like Jamerson in that nobody played like that when he showed up, but after a few short years everybody tried (and still tries) to play like him - he influenced EVERYBODY. Very heavily rooted in R&B - he played bass with Wayne Cochrane and the CC Riders and would carry a tape of them around and play it for everybody, even after he was an established jazz star. Check out his first album - Jaco Pastorius and the albums he did with Joni Mitchell. Every bass player I knew stopped dead in their tracks and went to Plan B when they heard his first album in the mid-70's.

Thanks, SteveS. I'll look around for those two cd's.

Larry...what do you mean by "Yeah, he's ok...heh heh"?

Aljaydu,

Larry's just having some fun with you. He a bass player and he knows Jaco. It's as if someone came on the forum and said - "have you ever heard of James Jamerson - I just heard him and he's amazing".

There's so much to say that you almost can't say anything, hence "yeah, he's ok". And Jaco is that good!

As SteveS said, I was being facetious.

Jaco was a special cat indeed. Through hard work and a strong sense of individuality he brought his chosen instrument to a new level that influenced a ton of players. His playing continues to do that. You'll see ADS in 'musician's wanted' saying "Need that Jaco sound" or conversely, "no Jaco's please". Even the negative is a testament to how Strong an Influence he was.
