FUNGI ATTACKS VINYL

I FOUND TO MY UTTER DISMAY THAT SOME RECORDS THAT I HAVE NOT PLAYED IN 25 YEARS HAVE BEEN INFESTED BY FUNGI. WHEN I PLAY THEM NOW, I HEAR A LOT OF POPS AND CLICKS WHICH I DON'T RECALL WERE PRESENT WHEN I ORINALLY BOUGHT AND PLAYED THEM.

ONE HAS TO LOOK VERY CAREFULLY AT THE SURFACE TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF THESE CRITTERRS. THEY TAKE THE SHAPE OF A MICRO STARFISH. I NEARLY CRIED MY EYES OUT. I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO WASH THEM WITH A SOLUTION CONTAING A FUNGICIDE AND ALLOW THEM TO AIRDRY THOROUGHLY BEFORE I PLACE THEM IN SLEEVES.

THEY WERE IN A BASEMENT. I HAD A DEHUMIDIFIER IN THE AREA FOR ONLY THE PAST TEN YEARS.
I HAVE A MAMMOTH TASK AHEAD OF INSPECTING AND CLEANING. THE UPSIDE, I'LL BE LISTENING TO SOME LONG FORGOTTEN GEMS, LOTS THAT I HAD COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN I HAD.

JUST THOUGHT I'D MENTION ABOUT THE FUNGI, AS SOME OTHER MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY MAY BENEFIT FROM THE ALERT.

ANY TIPS ON ELIMINATING THE CRITTERS OR ANY ADVICE ON STORAGE, CARE OF VINYL.

SOMETIMES WINDEX WILL HELP CLEAN THE GROOVES AND REMOVE FUNGI OR TRY A DISC CLEANER SOLUTION,HAVING A FEW 45'S MYSELF I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT FUNGI,ALSO YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK YOUR STYLUS FOR WEAR AND TEAR AS WELL AS DUST THOSE POPS ARE NORMAL FOR OLD RECORDS THAT HAVE BEEN PLAYED OFTEN.HOPE THIS HELPS.

Soulpuss & Company:
The best place to store records is in a dry place (temperature controlled preferred) so that the vinyl can remain preserved. Currently, I'm storing my records in boxes stacked carefully in closets that do not attract a cold draft.

Also Ritchie- you can use RUBBERMAID Tubs sold at office supply stores (Staples, OfficeMax etc in U.S) and save all those anti-moisture crystals you get in Electronic Componets. Toss one in before closing. Heat and Moisture are vinyls worst enemy.

Pop & Crackles (I thought you were talking about my bones in the morning)

Consider this: With the silent background of CD and Digital Music we may have become 'spoiled' by today - Imagine AM MONO radio and Vinyl!!! Talk about pop & hiss :)

But we still had fun jamming in the day. How much can the average 'SOUL' Music fan hold in their head????
We Old Timers can tell the name of the HITS in about 5 notes. But forget our kids name when they call.....LOL

Soulpuss..I am sorry to hear of the "Attack Of The Killer Fungi" but in this case (and I NEVER use it but..) Windex is a good thing to use just get the dirt and grime out..

KevGo's suggestion is perfect...the room temp plays a major role..

Ritchie:LOL, "Rubbermaid" ...Hi, im Julie...LOL..

I think humidity is a factor. If you live in a "dry" climate like Southern California, it may not be such a problem. But if you live in Florida or Lousiana where it is humid, the fungi like to grow there......

I would suggest immersing the grooves portion of a "soiled" record in room temperature water and wiping clean the record with a soft cotton cloth. If you have access to a professional record cleaner (like at a hi-fi specialty shop), that is even better....

Then again, you could run a soiled disc on an old philco console turntable and the force of the tonearm will crush the little critters.....(lol)

Used to use a glycerine and water mix in a used record store I once worked in to clean records, but I don't remember the ratio. Anyone know this concoction?

HEY MEL,YOU'RE ALREADY IN AND WHO SAYS YOU'RE NOT FUNNY,CERTAINLY NOT THE OL SOUL PROSPECTOR[DAGNABBITT]!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Kegtapper (63.208.186.125) on Saturday, April 12, 2003 - 11:23 pm:

Doug: That used to be called playing "wet" Records, takes out pops and hiss when recording over to Cassette (poor needle or lots of scratches). 75/25 water glycerine should be fine.

TO Our BRITS in Forum: No a RubberMaid is not an adult toy/service, nor is a the woman that hands out tickets for not using condoms. :)

Who makes up those names that means something else in another country??? ADVERTISING
When J.Edgar Hoover was head of the F.B.I. here. South Africa was using the slogan "HOOVER SUCKS" for their vacuum cleaners. Boy was he pissedoff.

Ahhh...remember going to used record stores? The musty, mildewy aroma of old LP jacket covers?
Most of the older record stores in Detroit in the late 60s kept their jazz records in a backroom or basement 'cause they didn't sell.
The fungus/vinyl ratio was amazingly high; when you left those places, people on the street would detour around you...

Wow! Never heard of fungi on vinyl. I've always taken excellent care of my vinyl and I've been buying records since 1964. Always kept my music in a cool room, away from dust and funk. Guess it works...

Top of pageBottom of page   By Soul Sister (65.43.153.219) on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 - 11:01 am:

Do NOT use windex or record cleaner on 78s it has alcohol in it and will ruin the record. For 78s use a mild soiution of warm water and soap, at least thats what I've been told to do with mine, by a freind who has had success with that method before.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Uptight! (24.55.6.144) on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 12:29 pm:

Soul Sister, I agree on both your points. With a bar of Ivory you can sort of squeegy the dirt from the groove before rinsing. Actually I prefer to use COLD water with the soap, as I'm afraid warm water might "melt" or ruin the high frequencies.
