What would I have done without my music? I love my music. Through the 60's 70', and 80's, my LP's were spinning on my turn table. When I heard that they were going to stop producing turn tables I panicked. Thank goodness for the DJ's who use turn tables. :o)
Through all the hell and destruction of this life, I held on to my music which comforted me.
I LOVE MUSIC!

SlyFan - I'm not sure on the year, but it had to have been after they starting selling cds. They were talking about getting rid of the turn tables. I didn't have any cds, as I was still playing my old LP's. When Highland Appliance went out of business I purchased another component set, with double cassettes. I started putting my music on cassettes just in case I wouldn't be able to play my LP's. But as I said before, they decided against discontinuing the turn table. I love my LP's.

One thing I have learned from this site has been the deep affection people have for music.
I would say it is a deeply personal thing. People take their own tastes very seriously indeed.
One thing frustrates me however and that is how difficult it is to unravel the history.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Thursday, April 10, 2003 - 05:26 pm: |
Hello DMeikle - Your are right about unravelling the history, but I think we are doing quite well at trying to find the roots of the music. More and more are interested in getting to the history. I am really enjoying the book publised by Jim G.
By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Thursday, April 10, 2003 - 06:01 pm: |
Glad you're reading Jim G and Lars' book, it's great to put Detroit music in context, with the historical background of jazz, blues, etc.
Hey you know Sis that you can buy regular turntables, not fancy DJ ones, at Best Buy and places like that? I reported on that in a recent story, so I called a bunch of 'em. They mostly carry a basic but good Sony turntable that I bought a few years back when my old unit broke.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Thursday, April 10, 2003 - 06:04 pm: |
Sue - Yeah, I've seen the turn tables. They decided to keep them in production.

Do the '45',
the 7 inch single as well as all other vinyl will never die in my Jive dive.
Myself and lots of other collectors will never ever stop buying those platters that matter.
Dont forget that even Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble were spinning the vinyl way back in bedrock when they had to use the beak of a soulful bird or two,to get that sound out from the grooves.
Fred and Barney must be up there regards early pioneers that paved the way for collectors like myself.

Do you remember those big long players with radio, we called "hi-fi", or "stereos?"
Well, there is a guy down the street from my neice who is selling his. I started thinking, if he still has his HIFI set, then he probably has some great LP's and 45's. I almost went down to his house to look. I still may do so this summer.

SisDetroit:
I bought an RCA turntable at Radio Shack for a hundred bucks two years ago and it works pretty good. Yet I must admit I do miss the old stereo/hi-fi consoles my parents, uncles & aunts had when I was a child. They looked like furniture pieces and had a warm sound (my parents had a Magnovox that was made in 1950 that had a black & white TV, turntable with four speeds, an AM/FM radio and a built-in Jensen speaker. This thing was LOUD and the sound filled up the living AND dining rooms!).
I noticed that the folks who owned hi-fi's/stereo consoles and equipment had the coolest record collections, too.
In fact, maybe I should drag out my brother's J.C. Penney stereo with the BSR turntable & eight-track player...

Hahahah KevGo - I had a magnovox when I was married. When I left my ex, I left most of my LP's at the bottom of that cabinet. A couple times I went to try to get them, and he ran me out. (LOL) About 20 years later, I asked to borrow a couple of "my" LP's, (Arthur Prysock and Bobby Bland) and he allowed me. I did that twice, and retrieved a couple more. Do you think I gave them back? Heck no. (LOL)
By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Thursday, April 10, 2003 - 06:54 pm: |
On a somewhat serious note, if it weren't for music, I wouldn't be where I am today.
As a young child I learned how to read by reciting label copy from 45s and albums (around the age of four). At the same time I was listening to Motown, Stax/Volt, Philly soul, Chicago soul, Latin music, Rock & West Coast pop and soul. I was lucky to have a family that loved all kinds of music so I aborbed a lot from the home environment.
Music will always play a role in my life no matter where I go or what I do.

SisDetroit:
ARTHUR PRYSOCK! Now that, my dear, is a singer's singer! I can understand goin' back to the ex to reclaim the albums. I have Arthur's Verve LPs ("Love Me", "And This My Beloved") as well as the 45 of "When Love Is New".
As for the Magnovox - yeah, they made some great stereos & hi-fi's, didn't they? If I see one that is in great shape I will buy it just to have in the home (and to blast my old 45s as well!).

We were both lucky to have family that loved music and used it as a tool to educate us. My oldest brother was my "partner in crime" when it came to buying records (I remember in one purchase he bought Charles Wright's "Love Land", Freda Payne's "Band of Gold" and "The Sly, The Slick & the Wicked" by the Lost Generation - that tells you how old I am! ). I was also the family "DJ" who grew up to be a read DJ in my hometown for a few years.

I was supposed to go to medical school. After signing my first recordng contract I changed course. In later years my mother would ask me if I ever regretted my decision. I told her that I never had any regrets. I still don't. Music has taken me to many places in my life, physically and emotionally. Some being rather strange and frightening as most musicians would attest to. However I have always considered myself blessed to have had all the experiences and to have been so very fortunate to have met all the wonderful people I would come to know. I would not change a thing about my life.

It's funny you mentioned what your Mom asked you - my Mom asked me whether I would ever go back to being a radio DJ. I told her absolutely not - my dream was (and is) to have my own record label and this is something I desired since I was four years old & discovered Motown Records/Berry Gordy.
Now that this dream is becoming a reality, I'm happy and glad I stuck to my guns.

Not to be morbid in any way... but if it were not for music I would be dead. I have experienced a great deal of tragedy in my life and music was always the balm that soothed the pain, or gave the ability to express it and not keep it growing inside to fester as cancer. It is one of the reasons why I love Aretha Franklin so much, no matter how fat she gets or how diminished her voice may be at this point. The times where she put something on record that allowed me to live are too numerous to mention. Yes, my friends music is the massage.

Best if you get Direct Drive model otherwise the rubber band on the BSR models may need replacing. They usually have a strobe on the better ones. That let you know when the speed is correct.

Dear Soul Sister, SisDetroit, and all of you - It is truly 'music to my ears' that you share the passion and deep appreciation I have for music. It all started back in 1955 when I bought my first 45 record, I WAS just a young child and it was "Don't be Cruel" by Elvis. It has never slowed down all these years. If anything it's gotten more obsessive (do I have a sickness?) If my husband had even a fraction of the passion I have for music we would be living in a cracker box with the highest end Kick-butt sound system in existence! He at least tolerates my "obsession". Fortunately we do have friends who share my musical appreciation and we party a lot with them.
I still swear by my Philips 212 Electronic turntable I purchased in 1972. It's the best. The new turntables are really very low quality so I opted to keep my Philips. I also still have my Pioneer 828 receiver since 1972. I have since upgraded to a much more sophisticated sound system, but my Pioneer still kicks out the music. I also have a respectable collection of Albums, EPs and 45s. I have replaced my Pink Floyd, Ledd Zepp, Stones, etc. with cds, but still have the vinyl too. I have saved a lot of money since I started burning cds. It's been a long time since I bought any vinyl though. It would be a treat to browze a used record store. I used to go to Wazoo records in Ann Arbor quite a bit for some vintage vinyl.
