Hi Eli!! Yes, I am familiar with the personel changes throughout the years (being the big Philly fan that I am) but I didnt know that Charles Collins was a singer first.

Was Karl Chambers still playing in some of the mid 70's sessions?

Did Jerry Plunk pass or leave the group?? I noticed you put "WAS".

What type of vocal work did Charles Collins do?Where can it be heard? He played on some top 40 records out of philly but was mainly and primarily a jazz drummer, evidenced in those records. His time was suspect due to physiological problems and later substance abuse problems.

I knew that was coming from Bobby Eli but those are the facts and there indisputable.Everyones entitled to their opinion.I do appreciate your loyalty to your fellow musicians. He was a charismatic individual but became an active nose candy participant effecting his timekeeping. It's really noticable on Thom Bell's Temptation album. There's a few cuts on there where he rushes, comes down, goes back up(his body was out of whack).Again,he was a jazz drummer, this cannot be disputed.I have read many posts where peoples personal lives and habits were exposed mainly by yourself Bobby Eli(Tony Bell, alcoholism and mental illness, and others). This report about CC is in the same manner. He got exposed to a very unhealthy environment outside of philly and he dove in.Obviously this topic has struck a nerve with you so I'll leave it at that.Hopefully that's all behind CC now.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (151.197.61.232) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 03:53 am:

Friday... Just who the f**k do you think you are to pass judgement on someone who you do not even know?? I think that your attitude is completely
uncalled for and I would suggest that you go out and get a life!!!
Better yet, I will have Charles come on the forum himself and you can tell him directly just how much you know and feel about him about him.
I can tell by the way you speak, you must be a self professed musical scholar..albeit an asshole!!!!

Why should "people" take it easy when it's Bobby Eli who's over the top--again? And, as usual, unchecked by the board moderators. Why did he curse and call Friday an asshole...his morning medication didn't kick in?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Lynn Bruce (65.60.202.214) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 11:01 am:

Probably because Mr. Eli is a stand up guy that does not like to see people trash the reputations of friends that he respects.
Good for you Bobby!
Lynn

Top of pageBottom of page   By Amused (64.12.97.7) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 12:24 pm:

Let me get this right Lynn. It's ok for you and some others on this forum to disrespect posters by calling them names and cursing at them cause you're "standup guys" but nobody else can do it, right?

Where are the forum police and the posters who are so quick to set straight others who have done what Mr. Eli did? Why haven't they said something to Bobby? What Mr. Eli accused Friday of doing he has himself done on this same forum many times. Where were you then Lynn? Judging from your other posts I don't think you know your brain from your foot.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Michael/Cleoharvey (160.79.83.208) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 12:29 pm:

Don't forget the great Chaka Khan, who started out as a drummer. Years ago when she was performing at Belmont with Rufus I saw her take to the drums and she was major. Even her vocal licks are drum-influenced.

Its getting pathetic.
Amused/moosicman.
The reason these guys are taking no shit is because they have all been there. And when someone slags of a personal friend then they will give it to you with both barrells.
Everyones entitled to an opinion, but does Friday know the person personally before stating the stuff that he did.
Obviously not,as Bobby was offended.
Now Lynn is getting flak.
At least Bobby and Lynn have the balls to give there proper names.
If you want my name let me know and I will call personally.
all these bad vibes going down,
Lets get to the music.

Friday, unless the information contributes something meaningful to this thread, you ought not to post it.
Trashing someone in public is not justified by the fact that 'someone else did it too'.
Before you offer 'opinions' or 'facts' of this nature you might want to think about what you're doing, and why you're doing it.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Eli (151.197.162.78) on Friday, April 11, 2003 - 02:58 pm:

Once again, all you "experts" and you do know who you are, must remember.. not to toot my own horn but I was and am part of a musical legacy that includes some wonderful and talented , stand up people who do not deserve to be called "druggies"
and they do not deserve any negativity associated with them.

As I have previously stated, Charles will come on to SD and you can direct any and all questions to him one on one.
Dont forget..I was there from day one, were you???
If you cant get with the program then you do not belong on this forum.
I will not recind my previous statement either.
Get your facts straight and get a life!!!!!!

To those who support me, thank you kindly!!

Dont give into the negativity, its not worth it..There's always somebody talking trash..You are way bigger than that my man...

One thing for certain is that Mr. Charles Collins is a DAMN great drummer!! Thats all that counts!!

Lets keep it positive and keep adding these names..I am loving it!! I am still tripped out about Karen Carpenter being a drummer..wow..

Is all this bickering over now? I hope so 'cause I hate this. Bobby has known Collins for many years and I'm sure he would know better than any of us and if he says the guy is straight, he is straight. Now, let's get back to the music.

Eli,you have accused me of what you've done many times on this forum to the point where you said something derogative towards me.It's more like who the f do you think you are.Sadly to say you do have a need to toot your own horn and for some reason you think your the only one who knows anything musically.Get a life you said,I can see the kind of life you lead by the amount of time you spend on here.My name is Friday Mel and I did know CC personally Eli.CC's background was in and with jazz ensemble. The records "Use ta Be My Girl","Enjoy Yourself","Mama Can't Buy You Love","Your Gonna Miss My Lovin'" and even "Native New Yorker" all of which he played on were all jazz drum performances. You don't have to be an expert to hear this.I detect some enabling going on with you. It's nothing personal just objectivity. These are the facts and their indisputable.I shared something here and it offended you.Maybe what you've read here is new news to you but what I've shared above is truth.I have never posted information like that before on this forum but based on what I've read here mainly by you I didn't think it would cause this much of a problem.Maybe we can both learn from this because if I was Tony Bell's brother and read what you wrote and exposed about Tony on this forum I'd kick the living shit out of you.Sorry Ralph(please do not delete this post, thank you,Friday)

It's the Philadelphia Civil Court Docket. Type in somebodys name from the Philly area and you'll get more information about them then they want known. This is why I never reveal my real name on forums. Identity Theft is rampant and I don't want my personal business easy to access. Lots of cities have their civil and criminal dockets online.

I've been away dealng with father issues again and just read this thread. Please settle down everyone. Friday, you have to understand where Bobby is coming from. Bobby, I don't think Friday was trying to be malicious.Things just got a little out of hand. Friday, because Bobby was there and knows the guy, let's give him this one. I know from personal experience things that have been written or said of people I have worked with are out of whack at times. It happens. We have a Tammi Terrell issue on another thread. And by the way, Amused, I try and deal with everyone fairly regardless who they are or what their status is at Soulful Detroit. I resent the implication.

One last final post for Bobby Eli:I am from Detroit and studied under drummer/arranger Andrew Smith receiving instruction in drum and orchestral arrangement.Secondly I will now disclose information on which you derogatorily reacted with me.In 79-80 CC began playing for an artist named Tim Curry who was coming off an acting performance in the Rocky Horror Picture show.Thru this environment he was exposed to the above mentioned drug and began indulging. His mood and playing was greatly effected. He did a few projects in the early 80's but soon moved to Ca where his career as a studio musician eventually ended,he currently resides in Texas.I remember you Eli,you were an unloved obnoxious bullshitter and still are,it's all over this forum. The only asshole is what you see everyday in the mirror(he needs to hear it Ralph).Lastly,I hope Tony Bell never found this site because the shame and physiological effect communally would of killed him-no pun intended.I hope you find what you need in your life Eli.Peace

I normally dont comment on stuff like this but Im going to say something. As far as Friday is concerned even if Bobby Eli was or is a bull****
whatever I think that his talent speaks for itself and that is why he is here to share. If you were so secure in yourself you would not feel that you would have to expose anyone whether Bobby did or not. Im not here to relish in tidbits of my idols or performers lives. I like gossip like anyone else but when things get slanderous a la your comments its time to put it to a rest. I dont care if Bobby or Dennis Coffey or Russ robbed a bank Id still want to hear their musical tales from jail....if you have a beef against Bobby or anyone on this board I think we should all just forgive and forget life is too short and it aint worth it!!! I saw Bobby Eli and ALL of us can carry on and have fun and Friday either go as you said or lets talk music and not personal crap.......if the personal crap is relative its one thing but if its not spare the mud slinging..

OK, I think we need to leave this between Bobby and Friday now. It's up to them to decide what they want to do with each other. Let's stay out of this. Please.

There won't be any need for it.Ralph you seem like a great guy.I have enjoyed so much this forum learning more about Babbitt, great information from Dennis Coffey and now even Ray Monette.Everything I posted on this thread is true and for what it's worth I enjoyed the records Bobby Eli was a part of in the seventies,it was a part of my youth.I wish you all the best Ralph with you, your father and your family.Friday

Thanks Friday. I hope all this works out between you and Bobby. I really do think it was just one of those little misunderstandings that seem to blow up out of proportion on the forum from time to time. If I had my druthers I wish you wouldn't leave. You have been a valuble contributor here and your presence will be missed. Think it over.

Friday and Caleb,

There was no disrespect with the term son. In New York if you are any age, guy or gal you call each other son. It is a term of endearment here, sorry it does'nt have the same meaning in other parts of the country.

Vonnie

Vonnie's right guys. I use the term all the time. So Bobby and Friday...I would really like you two guys to try and smooth things out. You'll make this old Detroit Dago happy.

Some of you might not believe this but I just caught this thread tonight.

I was struck that a post on April 10th by "Friday" was the first on this thread to make accusations of a negative nature to someone.

Now I agree that we may (or may not) get it wrong on the perfection of forum moderating.

For goodness sake can you imagine how difficult that is?

Bobby Eli is a valued member of this forum. It is a privilege to have him on here. I find his postings, on the whole, informative and compassionate.

I am going to be honest here and say that I am not a great fan of posters who hide behind aliases. I thank you Eli for not doing that.

I also admire Ralph for sticking with some of these postings. Like many people, Ralph likes Bobby, I therefore think he went beyond the call of duty in leaving some of this crap on file.

Ten people, plus Lowell and myself, finance this site.

Please don't fuck us about!

David

From what I read the crap was posted Apr 11th at 3:53am.I love the records Bobby Eli was a part of but have been waiting to see what he was about internally. He probably could care less about that guy Friday and will probably say something here about me now. That guy Friday is gone now.Eli called him an a-hole and in return reaped a little what he sowed.Would of valued him much more if he apologized.I'm just the type of person who values character more than musical success.I'm sure I'm going to be hearing it now.The whole thing is a dead issue now anyway, the guy's gone and that's that.

Caleb,
I really thought this issue was history. Please try and see Bobby's side here. He KNEW the guy in question here. He worked with him. He loved the guy as a friend and respected him as a musician. The facts may or may not have been accurate but Bobby is made of something much more than skin and bone. He is a musician of the highest order and has a track record most of us in the business would be proud to call our own. If he seemed to go off a little fast he was merely defending someone that he knew and worked with for many years. Could things have been handled a little Differently? Maybe. But Bobby has SOUL Caleb and he doesn't want to see the good name of a friend besmirched in public no matter what the facts. You must admit you would want someone watching your back just like that. Now let's please leave this be.
