I played the single "I Couldn't Believe It" when I was a radio DJ. It was the most refreshing & soulful record I aired at that time (1987-88)along with their popular collaboration with Hall & Oates at the Apollo.

R&B: I have it on tape but the material was so-so to me and I'm a big David Ruffin fan. I do like "Goodnight Pillow" w/ Eddie, considering the shape his voice was in at the time & "One More For The Lonely Hearts Club"(the video is nice!). I haven't listened to it in a long while so maybe this'll be a good time as any.....

Peace!

R&B&Kev,
now as you know,I am a biased 4 beats to the bar, uptempo kind of guy. With my main focus being the 60's.
So anything else within reason is given a wide berth apart from earlier stuff etc.
A mate of mine was djing at an all-nighter in the modern soul room, and we were waiting for he 60s rare soulrooms to open, when WAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I go bananas over a track he is spinning.A 1980's cut.I find out what it is and it was Ruffin and Kendricks superb dancer called 'I Could'nt believe it'.

And I couldnt.
What an absolute gem of a record(andthensome)Which I still play today on tape. This really blew me away and still does.
Then again, with a pairing of these two mighty fine vocalists,I shouldnt be surprised.
Mel.

Mel:
"I Couldn't Believe It" blew me away also - the arrangement was rooted in "classic Motown" along with then-modern production values. David & Eddie sounded wonderful on the disc.

When the single came out around 1987-88, it was so refreshing to hear REAL singing in the midst of what was getting airplay at that time - some good (Hall & Oates, Luther Vandross, Gloria Estefan) and some that aren't worth mentioning. I just wish I had taken the RCA promo 45 when my program director offered it to me as a gift ("nah, I'll just buy the CD", my silly, then-21-year-old self said at the time)...

I love David. He has one of the most beautiful , strong and captivating voices I have heard to date. The ending of his life was a tragedy , and he is greatly missed. I enjoy the tracks from David's and Eddie's Lp. I also enjoy the tracks , " can we make love one more time" , "the letter" "cant stop the rain", "if loving you is wrong , and many others. What do you think about those cut's I have just mentioned ? Especially , "can we make love one more time" .

The song I absolutely loved by Ruffin & Kendrick was "I Don't know Why"(you treat me the way you do)co-penned by Four Top Renaldo Benson. Great song in the traditon of simple Mowtownish hooks and David & Eddies trademark call and response style. Making up for Eddies failing voice David wailed and sounded much as he did in his hey day. Wonderful record.

Hello Kdubya,

It seemed to me that David was blessed with a voice that lasted him til the day he died. It's amazing considering all the excesses he put his body through. I've discovered David & alot his music a couple of years ago. I'm hoping the powers that be would release an anthology on David. Didn't mean to digress but I had to say that. :o)

Motown released anthologies pertaining to David Ruffin's career with the label.

David Ruffin - The Ultimate Collection
David Ruffin - 20th Century Masters/Millenium Collection
David Ruffin - The Essential Collection (UK import)
Temptations - One By One: The Solo Years

Hey KevGo:

Yes, I have the Ultimate Collection but I should've been more clear in what I meant. Most of the songs are repeated in all those CDs you mentioned except a bonus track in each one. I guess I'm hoping that box set would be done on David(or Eddie for that matter), but it doesn't seem feasible since it seems that his music doesn't have enough support to have this done. I would love hear some alternate tracks & unreleased material that is probably collecting dust in the vaults. It just seems to me that it's much safer to keep David's the focus on his music with The Temptations, than any promoting his stint as a solo artist. JMO. :o)

Peace!

Question my friends, What the Hell happened to I Miss You Part 2 ? I have a decent collection of Tempts & Ruffin/Edwards/Kendricks/Woodson/Peoples with and without the The Temptations and this burns me up that on all the Ruffin releases they always list "I miss You Part 1" I wonder what else Motown has in the vaults ? In fact I may have slept it because I get sick and tired of them releasing the same songs in a different package like they think I aint looking :-) There are a number of cuts on David's solo album's like "Let Your Love Rain Down on Me" and others which were produced by Don Davis (Dramatics) where David shined like the star he was. Now those are the ones I'd like to see on CD, I have the albums but I know ya'll hearing me !

While I enjoy those compilations, to me they are just songs that had some commercial value in some ways. You have to have the lps to fully apprieciate David and Eddie. Both were exceptional artists and their solo work was tremedous.

Hello Aba21,

I agree about David & Eddie's solo work. Would be nice to see if some of it was available on CD.

Peace!

Hey Common

I have all David and Eddie's solo work on Cd. I had the lps and put them on cd. Eddie used to drive me crazy with songs like Honey Brown, You're A Part of Me, I Want To Live My Life With YOu, Skippin' Work Today, Only Room For Two, I Did It All For YOu and even the last song, I'm In Love With YOu which he struggled his way through are great songs.

Hollar!

Hey Aba,

I have all of David's work on tapes/LP & I've only burned two of his LPs to CD. As you know, music files take up a HUGE amount of space on your computer so I'm trying to see if I can get an extra hard drive & burn the rest. I really want all of Eddie's LPs, which have not been easy to find. I do have footage of him singing "Eddie's Love"(the bassline on this song is baaaad!), "It's So Hard For Me To Say Goodbye"(I like his version better than the Supremes'), "Can I"(I think there is a version by Brenda Holloway),& "If You Let Me". I have 45s of "Happy" b/w "He's A Friend" & "Keep On Truckin". "He's A Friend" & "Goin Up In Smoke" are my favorites simply because of the strong spiritual/social message behind them.

Peace!

Hi,

Common - I spent the year 2002 on the mission to get all of Eddie's music and I believe I finally have everything on vinyl. I had to replace some of my them that I had worn out years ago. Anyway my problem now is I can't seem to get the turntable hooked up to burn the lps to CDRs. It is imparative that I listen to Eddie while I commute to work.

I paid someone 25$ each to burn the first two lps for me, but at those prices, I want to do the rest myself. Any good web sites to assist in this endeavor would be appreciated.

I love Eddie and have been crying for his solo work to be re-released but Motown just won't seem to give in. ;-(

"Honey Brown" and "You're a Part of Me," the latter co-written by Ron Tyson, are two of my favorites Eddie Kendricks' songs. "You're a Part of Me" never escaped the He's a Friend album but "Honey Brown" was the B-side of "Get the Cream Off the Top" (it should have been the A-side) and ate up quarters in bars and lounges, hardly anybody pushed the A-side number, always "Honey Brown," never heard it on the radio though.

Hello everyone,

Aba: Will get right on it!

sdl: Do you have software such as Roxio or MusicMatch Jukebox(these are the ones I had on my computer when I bought it), that allow you to burn CD's? Maybe that's why you're having trouble? Hope Ralph doesn't mind, but you can go to electronic store & tell them you need a plug/wire that allows you to connect your stereo to your computer(the name escapes right now). Once you have the software & the plug, you are set! I hope that helps & maybe someone here could tell you the exact name of the plug/wire that you would need.

Peace!

hI EVERYBODY........BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF MY VINYL COLLECTION, I PURCHASED A PHILLIPS CD RECORDER TO PUT MY VINYL ON CD. IF YOU DON'T HAVE AS MUCH VINYL AS ME IT MAY NOT BE A GOOD THING BUT I FIND IT WORKS WELL AND FROM THERE I CAN TRANSFER IT TO THE COMPUTER AND BURN WHATEVER I NEED. BUT BETWEEN EDDIE AND DAVID ALONE I MUST HAVE 30 LPS MAYBE MORE.

Please resend it and I'll hop rith to whatever you need with Eddie. I was listening to Goin' Up In Smoke, For You, And Vintage 78 yesterday. When did you email me? I gonna see if I can find it.

Hi,

I have roxio on my pc. I tired to hook up
my turntable to the PC and record, but all
i got was a very faint sound of music and a lot of noise. I cleaned the record and got more of the same. The music comes through loud and clear on my pc speakers, but I guess I have something hooked up wrong.

I would love to burn my entire collection that tops out at about 500 lps and perhaps 300 -45rpms. But only *after* I get my "Sweet Eddie" taken care of. Right now "Eddie James Kendrick" is my priority since I have only been able to find two of his lps on CD EVER!

A lot of my other favorite artist's music I can get by purchasing "greatest hits" cds and antholoogies to play in the car. I have all of the above for Eddie ... but it is just not the same since none of the "greatest hits" packages have what I think are the greatest;-)

But, I repeat, until Motown releases all of EJK's solo lps on remastered cds -- I will have to learn somehow to burn them myself.
