Hey Everyone!

I've been reading this forum for about a week now, and I would have to say that it is one of the most informative, entertaining forums I've ever seen on the web. Obviously, the contributors have a deep love and and respect for both the music and the city of Detroit. The recollections of the riots were particularly moving.

Myself, I am a 21 year old male living in Toronto. I have been in love with Motown ever since I was 9, first falling in love with the Supremes, and then discovering all the other incredible artists on the various labels that branched out from Motown. I have been to the Motown Historical Museum once, when I was about 10, and can remember both my parents having to hush me up because I was finishing the tour guides sentences!! I was a trivia buff even then.. The young man who led the tour was extremely nice about the whole thing, and even showed me a beautiful item from his private collection, an original Motortown Revue program, signed by all the original artists. His name was Derrick...does anyone else remember him from the Museum? This was about 90-91.....

Anyways, hope to be able to contribute to some of your great conversations!!

Peace,

Michael O'Hara

(P.S. Does anyone have Earl Van Dyke's "That Motown Sound" on CD??)

MichaelOH - Sounds like the tour guide I had in the early 90's. Seems to me this guy may be the one who told me his last name was Gordy.

Hi Michael,

Welcome to Soulful Detroit.
We are a wordwide amalgamation of people both young and old and from every walk of life, both musical and just plain folks who are devoted fans and confessed "record junkies".

There are songwriters, musicians, producers, collectors, teachers, learners and one
wanna-be "mob guy" with somewhat of a limited knowledge of the English language, but you gotta love him. I think that he is on witness protection as he only appears once in a while when least expected.

Enjoy our forum and do keep coming back .
You will know it when he logs on

Hmmm...

Sis...maybe it was Esther Gordy Edwards' son? She's the one who runs the museum, isn't she?

Top of pageBottom of page   By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Saturday, April 05, 2003 - 03:43 pm:

Could have been her son. Does anyone know the names of Ms. Esther's children?

Wow...thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!

Soulpuss...no relation to Scarlet!! :)

As I was looking at the photos on the tour of Soulful Detroit, I was surprised at the pictures of United Sound, and all of the rooms containing the musical equipment in a shambles. Who owns this building? Looks very eerie!!

Welcome, Michael.
I'm Aljaydu from Baton Rouge, La. I'm only an outsider looking in. I've been here for a few months and let me tell ya...if knowledge is what you seek, then that's what you will find here.
My eyes and my mind has been so opened up by the good teachers that's on this site.

Welcome !!

One question for you...(it may not be a fair one):

Temps or Tops ????
:o)

Top of pageBottom of page   By MichaelOH (24.157.156.82) on Saturday, April 05, 2003 - 05:13 pm:

Aljaydu,

Definitely an unfair question!!! I love both groups so much, but...I think I would have to pick:

The Tops!! With that incredible mid-60's combination of H-D-H's finest and most adventurous writing, some of Jamerson's most inventive bass lines, and Levi's voice ripping out across the grooves...man oh man...it just sends me to soul heaven...

I just recently saw the Tops too...although Levi's not with them right now, the show was still top-notch. Theo Peoples has been Levi's fill-in, and he does a great job..., nothing compared to Mr. Stubbs though!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Aljaydu (68.18.114.105) on Saturday, April 05, 2003 - 05:33 pm:

Nancy: Yes, I am going to see the Funk Brothers on the 15th!! And get this...I got 4th row center seats! The funny thing was, they day before the show was announced, I had just had a conversation where I expressed my wish for the Funks to come to Massey Hall... :) (and no, I didn't enjoy the ice storm!)

Douglas: Not an argos fan....! But, thanks for the welcome!!

Nish: Really nice to see someone else my age who loves the same music...there aren't that many of us!

I think that covers everyone!!! Right now, I'm listening to the Funk Brothers' instrumental version of "Tell Me It's Just A Rumor Baby"...wow...what a groove!!

sorry hiram, I have been way too forthcoming about Michael Bolton on this forum in the past and although I would love nothing more than to have a go once again, like a recent cold turkey non-smoker, I shall refrain with my hands poised trembling above the keyboard, in the interest of peace and harmony.

It's threads like this that draw interest away from science, electronics, physics, mathematics, chemistry, and (phono stylus) diamond polishing, all of which set up all you nuts that ignore Beethoven and Mozart as you take for granted the technology that allowed you to worship your junk music in the first place.

From my point of view, this forum has as nutty thinking as the people of Iraq. (Before they discovered Beethoven,in the form of no more dictator.)

Mike McLean

PS: Don't worry, I am no nut making bombs like that nut, the unibomber.

It is just that I can't get in tune with the forum simply because it is a bunch of folks driving Chevy "Cadaviliers" when all that hip action is out there (like double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. I was into this big time at age 14, in 1955, as I was with Beethoven.)

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Wednesday, April 09, 2003 - 11:48 pm:

I'm sure Kenny G is a nice guy too -- that doesn't mean his music can't be dreckage, it just means it'd be harder to tell him.

Dave Marsh tells the story of meeting Harry Chapin in Connecticut, because he lived nearby, and it was weird because he disliked everything Chapin recorded, but he was a great guy who worked hard for the same charities (until his untimely death). Didn't change Dave's view of his music but he regretted his death, as you would a friend.

Oops I've just gotten a secret missive from an operative proving that Kenny G was in fact, an unmentionable word (at least in this seemly company)... so scratch "nice" ...

Harry Chapin is someone who really lived his music..I miss that dude a lot...James Taylor and Paul Simon, Jackson Browne also have that same dedicated energy as well..

You have a seriously wicked sense of humor, Horse...
One day this will come back to haunt you.
Aljaydu, I think Kenny G was perhaps Salieri in a earlier life...

Any more comments like yours and I will work to transfer them to the ERGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH thread!
