tHIS FALSETTO LED GROUP PUT OUT "HOOKED ON YOUR LOVE" mid 70's. ON OSIRIS RECORDS. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANYMORE INFO ON THE GROUP.
ARRANGED BY NONE OTHER THAN PAUL RISER.
LABEL HAS A MEMPHIS ADDRESS.
PRODUCER WAS MARLIN McNICHOLS FOR WEB FOOT PROD.
I GUESS THERE IS AN ATLANTA CONNECTION SOMEWHERE AS WEB FOOT IS RUN BY ILENE BERNS, THE LATE BELOVED BERT BERNS' WIDOW.

Osiris was supposedly a partnership of Major
Lance and Al Jackson Jr. of Booker T and the MG's
- there's a few Major Lance singles on the label.
I seem to remember that Major lived in Atlanta
in the mid-seventies.
However from the credits on the Pure Velvet record it looks to me as if it's from Detroit
Marlin McNichols' name crops up on a few Detroit
records.
I don't know the record but I'll see if I have
any further info. on the group.

Hi Davie: I do remember the Major Lance releases. I believe one of them got some disco play.I seem to recall a title like "You're my everything". It was very catchy.
The writers of "Hooked on your love" are A. King. & E.Waters. pub- Ala King Music-BMI.
Pretty sweet soul ballad with rap.
The flip is "I'm tired of dreaming" Joe Hinton & Marlin McNichols. Act One music/ Fudge Lips music BMI. Paul Riser producer. Midtempo but un inspiring.

Hi Soulpuss,
Ala-King is Popcorn Wylie's publishing company
so another bit of info. pointing to a Detroit
origin.
Joe Hinton is the ex-Motown writer who moved to Atlanta to join GRC/Aware when he left Motown.
Another Detroiter who worked at GRC was engineer
Milan Bogdan. I've a feeling Marlin McNichols
worked with Milan but can't remember the exact
connection offhand.
It looks like there were a lot of people involved in getting these tracks placed with a label.

Had a quick look at the BMI database
"Hooked" has the writers registered as Althea
Wylie (Popcorn's wife ?) and Ethel Waters.

Althea was Popcorn's mother.
Sadly Popcorn's wife Gloria died a couple of weeks ago. Gloria was a dancer at the 20 Grand.
See our first webisode. "SoulfulDetroit tour".

Could the Ethel Waters be the veteran vaudville/ blues/gospel singer/actor. She was born in the late 1800's. She is no longer with us.
Now that I think of it, Popcorn's mom may have been born around the same time. Very, very interesting.

Soulpuss - when I saw the name "Ethel Waters" like
you I thought "that name's familiar" but as for it
being THE Ethel Waters I dunno - I doubt it.
I checked my database to see what else I had on
Marlin McNichols and found these
Bell 45214 LUNAR FUNK (4/72)
Slip The Drummer One / Space Monster
Prod. Marlin McNichols
Aware 034 DEEP VELVET (9/73)
Hanna Mae (A King, E Waters)
?
Prod. Marlin McNichols arr - Paul Riser
Same writer, production credits as Pure Velvet
so it looks as if Deep Velvet changed their name
to Pure Velvet for some reason. "Hanna Mae" was
a smallish hit - reached #83 on the Billboard
soul charts in 11/73.
As for the Osiris label, the final (?) single on
the label was
006 FUDGE LIPS (11/75 ?)
Please Come Home For Christmas / Satan's Triangle
I don't as yet have any more info. on it but
it looks as if it's probably another Marlin
McNichols project.
Re. Lunar Funk - there's an earlier Bell single
"Mr. Penguin PT.1" / Mr. Penguin - PT. 2" (45172)
but there's no apparent McNichols involvement
The Major Lance single we were trying to remember
is actually called "You're Everything I Need"
I've a feeling "Hanna Mae" is on one of those
compilations of GRC/Aware material issued by
Ace/Kent. If anyone has those CDs the booklet notes might give some more info.
I'll post a list of Marlin McNichols - related
records later in the week when I've had a chance to locate some missing info - some interesting
stuff .
Is the check in the mail ? LOL
