Scorpio by Dennis Coffey and The Detroit Guitar Band with that incredable rhythym section not to mention Babbitts solo.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Uptight! (24.55.6.144) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 10:03 am:

Oh, yeah. I remember at Monnier Elementary, it seemed like we only had ONE record that went along with the school's phonograph player. It was Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio" 45! If it wasn't the only record there, it was the only one we played. Imagine on rainy school days having to listen to this record over & over in the gym. We didn't seem to mind because was a great record--and still is.

Years later it would be sampled in a rap song called "Bust A Move."

Booker T. & The MG's was my first love in instrumental soul. "Home Grown" on Stax is still a favourite of mine. Steve Cropper's guitar is pure dynamite on this track.

But my hero is Jr Walker. His mix of controlled Motown magic with the wild sax playing is fantastic. Just listen to his sax solo on Foreigner's "Urgent"... magic.

Here are two early favourite tracks by the saxman...

Might I add one more: Barry White-Instrumental mix of " I've Got So Much to Give" --This appeared only as a "B" side of a special 45 pressing for juke boxes-it is not on stock copies or to my knowledge on DJ copies,or any known LP. I used to hear this in clubs all of the time in c1973. I played it a lot myself. Lots of others liked it-so when i find a copy at a record sale, this wonderful side is always worn beyond use... God Bless,,,

Hi folkz!

I'll try again with a question I asked earlier on this thread... Jr. Walker recorded two great instrumentals: "Cleo's Mood" and "Cleo's Back". I have wondered about this name Cleo. Was it his wife? Daughter? Dog? Or is it a word game or expression I don't know about? Or what? Anyone here knows or can explain?
