It is very sad to hear of the passing of Edwin Starr. Condolences to his family and friends.
It is high time we acknowledge the veteran singers that are still with us.
Rufus Thomas probably held the title for the oldest surviving singer that made the Billboard R&b charts until his recent passing at age 83.
Can you think of a singer that has inherited his crown.
My pick is Roscoe Robinson. He is very close to eighty. I presume he is still with us.
Don your musical thinking caps.

Vonnie and I have a dear close friend. He is "Little" Jimmy Scott. He and his wife Jeanie
are grat people.
Jimmy is 79 and going strong.
I heard from them yesterday and they just came back from a European tour and will be in Philly in early may at Zanzibar Blue.
I know that he wants some material from me and I have just the songs!!
Check out his book "Faith In Time" co-authored by David Ritz.
He is truly one of a kind and a living legend.

Mel,
I was fortunate to see the Blind Boys twice. They were incredible.
By Soulpuss (24.102.217.36) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 08:24 pm: |
Mel and Ralph it's neat you should mention the Blind Boys. Roscoe Robinson, I mentioned in the opening post used to sing with the Blind Boys. He was originally from Alabama and resided in Gary, Indiana during the forties and fifties where he performed with a gospel group.

SoulPuss,
Certainly, Roscoe Robinson's one BIG 'hit-wonder' "THAT'S ENOUGH" from 1966 (off the WAND Record label) is certainly, one of my all-time favorites, from that year....
I don't want no security,
I just want you to give your love to me
And that's enough,
That's enough, Baby, that's enough....
...And, you know the rest of the 'story' about this,
By Soulpuss (24.102.217.36) on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 09:29 pm: |
Hey Jim:
Roscoe wrote most of the soul records he recorded. I also like "How much pressure ..."/ "Do it right now"

Ralph: I learn something everyday on Soulful Detroit. I receive a bushel of laughs too. Laughter keeps away the wrinkles.

Dee Dee Warwick has been mentioned. Hooray!
Does anyone have any information of where she's living now? Does she still perform?
She's definitely one of my greatest soul music idols.
David.

I do recall when Jimmy Scott's "I may never" on Savoy was big in my neck of the woods in the fifties.

Soulpuss; WOW! Baby you go way back, love it, love it!! Jimmy did "I May Never" in N.Y. in 1958,Savoy 1548. What part of the country are you from?

R & B mentioned Koko Taylor. I had the honour of holding a pie she had just bought in a baker's shop while she posed for pictures and signed autographs in London in October 1967. It's a kind of fame.
