I never really took to Mijac's voice back in the day (guess he was too young to have developed enough 'soulfulness' for me). However I always loved "I Want You Back".
BUT since I heard David Ruffin's version of this song, I no longer play the J5's.

Can anyone tell me what other versions of 2 other Mijac / J5 songs there are......the songs in question being "Take Me Back" (a Motown 45 B side) and the B side to "Ben" (can't remember the title but it's a long one and it's composer was Berry G himself -- so I guess there must be an early / mid 60's version about as well).

JSmith:
The B-side of Michael's "Ben" was "You Can Cry On My Shoulder", which was a Gordy composition.
Brenda Holloway recorded the original version in 1965.
I used to play Michael's "You Can Cry.." because he did such a great job with the song and the production/arrangement was smooth & smokin' (in fact I have two copies of the 45 because I wore the grooves down on the first one I bought!).
Hope this helps.

John,

Odd you should mention "Take Me Back" as I've been
playing that a lot recently - a great track. I
don't know of any other version but it wouldn't surprise me if there's another version lying in
the vaults of Invictus. If there is I wanna hear
it !

Another really fine MJ vocal is "Who's Looking
For A Lover".

I really can't be bothered with anything he's
done in the eighties onwards but decided to dig
out the double "Best Of .. " CD a few weeks ago to
remind myself of what I liked about him in the first place - those two tracks I mentioned
really stood out - maybe it's because I haven't
heard them played to death.
