I saw his post on the MBB. He also said he was trying to confirm this as well.

What would convince me is if it came from a news source like Yahoo, BBC, Billboard online..., etc.

This will be one long sad thread,

Like Ritchie, my love of Soul Music really took off when I heard one of Edwin's songs on Radio Luxembourg in 1968. It was "I am the man for you baby", a song you never hear people talking about. Well I loved it.

When I bought the 45 the flip side hit me even harder, "My weakness is you".

At the Twisted Wheel I "discovered" "Back Street" on the turntables. It was the epitome of what we were into.

"Agent double-O soul", "Headline news". The albums "Soul Master", "25 miles". I could go on and on.

Everbody laughed when I bellowed "You're still the greatest Edwin" at the Apollo in Glasgow in 1976.

He always will be.

I am simply in tears, and I cannot find the words. I am so thankful for Edwin's entire body of work. But the man himself will be greatly missed. Again, it's just too soon.

Usually, when I have a down day, H.A.P.P.Y. Radio brings my smile out everytime. Edwin's voice moves me to the core. I also laugh whenever I see the episode of Seinfeld which jokingly connects the book War And Peace with Edwin's War. At the moment, it hardly seems appropriate, but it's all I can think about. I am so happy he was recently featured in Rhythm, Love and Soul.

Rest in peace Edwin, you will forever be Agent 00 Soul. We love you.

Jesus,
I thought this was a wind up.
Unbeleivable bad news to say the least.
I saw Edwin 7 times and have never ever known him to do a bad show.
Way back in 1973 I sat and spoke with him at an all-nighter after getting past his bodyguard, and what a genuine guy he was.He signed my paper peace/Edwin Starr.
The last time I saw him was in our Town of Ormskirk where he did a gig at a public house and the whole town was there to see him once more set the place alight.
Even when he did H.a.p.p.y. Radio the place was bouncing.I am totally depressed on hearing of this sad news.
Edwin was a Legend on the rare/northern soul scene.Appearing at all the major all-nighters over the years. You name it,he did it.
The Wheel.
Up the Junction.
Torch.
Casino.
and all the many other all-nighters and early soul venues.
His records are second to none.
A complete professional at all times.
I will miss you Edwin after all the great, great music and preformances that I was lucky to see you at and also meeting you with guys like Snake Davis etc all talking away like we were all mates.
R.I.P.Charles Hatcher.

This is an enormous shock. This gentleman has remained at the top of his profession and lived in the UK supplying us with great soul music for many years now. He is an icon and has held the beacon for great music and Northern soul, by delivering great performances one after the other. His charm and abilities are renowned in the business and respect for him just grew and grew as the years went on. I take this as a personal tragedy and am devastated. My sincere thoughts go out to Lilian, his family and his great backing band 'The Team'. His music will live on forever in our hearts.

This is awful news. I saw Edwin in Cheltenham last year with Martha and Freda Payne and he was truly great. His career has been consistent, his talent obvious from his earliest recordings and his generosity and warm personality reached across to everyone. What's more, in the UK especially, he kept the music alive across the decades, bringing ever more generations of fans and becoming the personification of Motown and soul for those of us who were around the first time. Most of his music was joyous; all of it uncompromising. Good God, y'all - Stand up and shout it: Thanks, Edwin, from the bottom of our hearts.

I didn't want to comment right away because, as a former journalist, I wanted to check my sources before I said anything.

This is indeed a sad day in music.

Charles "Edwin Starr" Hatcher was one of music's most powerful singers and songwriters, from "Double-O-Soul" to the Shades of Blue's "Oh How Happy" to "War".

Thank goodness our "comrade in arms" T.J. Lubinsky booked him for the Rhythm Love & Soul special where Edwin got to perform with the Originals, Louvain Demps of the Andantes and Dennis Coffey (as close to a Motown reunion as one could get).

Right now, the heavens have a new headliner...may his journey be peaceful.

Here's the report from Skynews website.

SOUL'S EDWIN STARR DIES

Soul legend Edwin Starr has died at the age of 61.

The US-born singer - known for his enduring hits War and Contact - is thought to have died of a heart attack.

He had lived for many years in the UK and died at his home near Nottingham.

Seventies rock star Suzi Quatro, who has known Starr since she was a teenager in Detroit, led tributes.

She said: "He was the best. There was nobody better on stage and he was the nicest man you could ever wish to meet."

Starr was born Charles Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee. He formed his first group, The Future Tones, in 1957, recording one single before his three-year Army draft.

He was offered a solo deal in 1965.

His biggest success came with his outspoken single War, a US number one in 1970 and number three in the UK, for the renowned Motown label.

He had another taste of chart success at the end of the 1970s with Contact and H.A.P.P.Y. Radio which were both top ten hits.

He performed a pair of shows in Stuttgart, Germany, at the weekend.

Rainer Haas, Quatro's husband and the promoter of the Stuttgart shows, said: "He was just superb. He played to 16,000 people over the two nights and he put on a great show.

"The shows were actually recorded for television so we will have an enduring memory of how brilliant he was live."

Last year Starr performed at the wedding of Liza Minelli and David Gest in New York.

Really sad news. It is already night in Sweden. Tomorrow we will play his music on VINYL 107. I just called my Music Director to change the playlist and inform the DJ's. I play the Soul Master album now with tears in my eyes. Edwin Starr was the reason I started looking for other labels than Tamla/Motown. Ric-Tic was king for many years.

This is very sad news. I first became acquainted with Charles Hatcher when he attended Kennard Jr. High in Cleveland, Ohio. He was always a clean cut nice guy who set a good example for younger guys like me (by six years). His singing skills created a lot of jealousy from the local toughs in the Outwaithe Homes Projects where he grew up and toughs from neighboring streets. But Charles was fast, he ran track in school, and could outrun his adversaries. He graduated from East Technical High School.

He was the lead singer of the Futuretones Band, which included the late long time guitarist for the O'Jays, Russell Evans. The Futuretones was the areas most popular soul band at the time and played to packed halls and gyms all over Cleveland's Eastside. Charles was a different singer in Cleveland than his future recordings. He sung mostly ballads like "Never Let Me Go," stuff like that. Many of his homies never got use to his high-octane "Edwin Starr" recordings but realized he had to do what he had to do.

I've been trying to contact his sister Patty. But she's married now and nobody knows her last name. After Charles' mother died people lost contact with Patty. Charles contracted prostrate cancer a few years ago, but I don't know if this had anything to do with his massive heart attack. Walter Johnson, who works with H. B. Barnum, said he didn't look good backstage at the PBS Special, and Walter should know--he grew up across the courtyard from Hatcher's and credit Charles' mother with teaching his group, the Donations, how to sing harmony.

He married Annette Tucker from Cleveland and has an adopted son with her. Annette recorded with the Creations on Patty Records in Cleveland.

p.s. I don't have to tell Patty, their announcing his passing on the media in Cleveland as I'm writing this post.

I have just been thinking about how the untimely passing of recording artists have affected me during my life. I was a little to young when we lost Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochrane for it to have any impact. When Otis died I remember I cried and was devastated. As great as Elvis and Lennon were it never brought a tear. But tonight I shed tears for Edwin Starr, a man I have never met but had enormous love and respect for.

61 is too young to go. I think we need to hire someone to go around to check on the health of our soul greats. Singers and musicians lead such a hard life and often have medical "issues" later on in life that they postpone looking after ...

I say we raise money, get Universal/Motown and TJ Lubinsky to pitch in, and hire someone -- SisDetroit? -- to go around making sure everyone's going to the doctor, taking their meds, losing the weight or whatever ...

Don't want any more checking out before their 70s at least ...

The man lived up to his name, to be sure...one of the most talented and classiest men to grace soul music...he will certainly be missed. God bless, Edwin!

RD--are you from Cleveland? I've lived on the east side (Euclid Beach/Collinwood area) all my life.

I just remembered something Edwin said in the interview he did for Soul Survivor magazine. The interviewer asked Edwin why he did a Joe Tex medley in concert. He responded by saying that one reason was that he was disturbed by what he had heard on the radio about Joe. The radio announcer mentioned something about Rick James collapsing from exhaustion, and by the way, Joe Tex died today. Edwin was amazed and shocked that Joe, with all his accomplishments, could only merit a cursory mention. He added, "If that's the best they can say about Joe Tex, what the hell are they gonna say about Edwin Starr?".

I think we've had a lot to say about Edwin...all of it POSITIVE...for a man who always gave 150%, every time. My condolences to his family.

Best,

Mark

This is just to sad and especially at a time when his songs couldn't be more pertainant.
I had the oportunity of working with Edwin in London in 1986 at Wessex Studios as part of the chorus on one of those "We are the world " type things which he and Steve Mcintosh of the Cool Notes wrote and who's group I was producing at the time.
What a nice guy.
He will be missed indeed.

Thursday Breakfast England

I have only just woke up to read the sad news of EDWIN going to join the Big Choir! and sat here alone I feel so sad and cold.

Over the years I worked with Edwin a lot in Concerts and appearances and of course played his music on the radio, what a Guy full of true warmth and energy.

He will be sadly missed, but he leaves us all such memories to hold on to Forever!

Sympathy to His Family.

EDWIN - THANKS!

I went to sleep last night with the fantastic lyrics of "Back Street" ringing in my brain.

This morning I woke up to "War"...you know what I mean.

It struck me though that it is ironic that Edwin should pass in the middle of the most hotly disputed conflict of all time. A conflict where peace protesters march to the sound of "War".

A fitting legacy.

I was so shocked to hear the news of Edwin's death. I offer my heart felt condolences to his family. Edwin was a sincere and wonderful person. I had the pleasure of meeting him back in the day and he was a joy to know. He was impressed with my poise and education. He offered me a job as his personal assistant but I was unable to take the position because of my parents objections. I was a young teen and my parents felt that I was too young to be involved in that aspect of the business and they did not want me to travel. I will always remember him as a sincere and honest individual. His talent and great personality has left a lasting impression in my mind. I have always thought of what might have been if I had gotten my parents permission to be his personal assistant.

I will miss his great talent and his faith that he showed in my ability to be a part of the music community. Rest in Peace Edwin you are a star that shines brightly in the heavens.

I wanted to share an ironic thing that just came to mind. Yesterday or the day before, myself and a co-worker Barbara burst out in song. What did we sing? "War" what is it good for, that is a really telling omen. It also came to my mind that Edwin was a soldier and spent time fighting in a war, and now he has left us during another war.

As I said in another thread regarding Cholly Atkins, if there is ever a time we need Edwin Starr to remind us of what "War" is all about, it is now.

"Peace, Love & Understanding - there must be some room for these things today..."

To think, he (and the Temptations) said this in 1970....

Thanks, Edwin.

Well I've been playing edwins tunes all day and I still can't get over the loss. what's really frustrating is that, to a lot of people, Edwin was going to be around forever. because of his relentless touring and his never faltering work ethic, he'd almost become ubiquitous on the circuits and so his true class has often been overlooked.

I'll remember him, firstly, for his great voice. Jools Holland said that in all the years he'd ran his live "Later" show, which had featured many legendary musicians and artists, Edwin had been the on ly artist who hadn't needed his voice to be played back to him using stage monitors! What a pair of lungs!

I'll remember him for his warm smile.

I'll remember him as one of the greatest performers who never really received the credit he was due. 110% was for wimps. Edwin gave that in his dressing room warm up.

I'll remember him for his dedication to soul music, regularly championing the passion and knowledge of soul fans to whoever would listen.

I'm attending a soul do on Saturday, where there'll be a minutes silence before "agent OO Soul will be the first tune played.

Just hope I can enjoy the music, dancing with tears in my eyes.

Ade, like you I spent last night playing all the old stuff too. The songs are ageless.

As T.L. Harris said earlier about the British taking care of him, it's true. I remember moving house from Milton Keynes to London 8 years ago. It was hectic and tiring, but we had tickets to see Edwin at The Jazz cafe in Camden that Friday night. We made the concert and as usual it was fabulous. I do not think the reality of this has been realised, certainly by me. Chatting at work and saying yesterday that it was the sound of Motown first, then the artist that attracted me to this music. Then for the first time I realised that Edwin Starr has played a very important role in my life. I have his albums, CD's and seen him at least 5 times in 8 years, met him twice and once he introduced me to his family on their travelling coach, here where I work, after a Christmas party. Call me lucky? You bet! I am so pleased we made The Palladium last year to see him with Martha Revves and Freda Payne. It was the greatest performance of Motown/Invictus music I have ever seen on stage. I was hoping to meet him again soon. I do hope 'The Team' continue to perform and educate me with their music.

Great label scans.

Brian, my thoughts exactly about 'The Team'. Something has to be done with their talents. It would be good if they did a tribute song encompassing all the great Motown/Ric Tic songs he recorded. Imagine if The Funk Brothers and The Team and of of course Dennis Coffey got together in Detroit with those technicians who were there at Golden World and Motown, to engineer it, along with a producer(s) connected to those early days. Alan Slutsky could then rest knowing that he had found great musicians and singers to complement his Funk Brothers tour if he came to the UK, plus they could perform their tribute song live on stage with the greatest show on earth. We SoulfulDetroiters would then have the task of trying to get the song played on the radio and raising their profile. If the song charted, it would give them valuable exposure whilst proving that Edwin's songs will be around for along time and introduce a new generation to the sound and cause. The Team would become a recognised act on their own and continue to perform and react with audiences up and down the country keeping the faith wherever they went. Imagine if the song was on the Motown Label!

Any 60's soul or Motown performer wishing to perform over here would have the perfect band 'The Team' to back them, who after all, have been the equivelent of a tight studio band for many years. This should be pursued without a doubt. This would be another way to acknowledge the music of one of the greatest performers in the world, Mr Edwin Starr.

I can't believe I only just heard this- I've not been using the internet for about two months; just came back yesterday and this news awaits me. Other people have said it all much better than me- I think those of us here from the U.K will always have a special respect/love/admiration for Edwin: he was such an important man for us. He earned that status not just through his recordings (played "I Want My Baby Back" last night many times) and incredible live performances (the greatest!), but also the way he carried himself and acted towards everyone. A great man.

R.I.P

P.S- Is anyone else now beginning to feel a little afraid whenever they go to open up a new thread with just an artists' name?? I don't want to hear about any more of my favourite artists dying.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Yan (24.69.255.204) on Monday, April 14, 2003 - 04:46 pm:

RD- I read your post about Edwin's early work with the Futuretones with some interest- thanks. Did he not sing in his wild-style then at all?? I seem to remember Edwin saying that their favourite song to cover was the Metrotones' awesome "Skitter, Skatter"- which is about as manic as doo-wop gets- and would seem the perfect veichle for Edwin's outrageous vocal chords. I'm guessing the Metrotones were from your area; because it always struck me as a pretty obscure song to be covering: was their a link between the two bands? Well, whatever- thanks for posting about a period of Edwin/Charles' life we tend not to hear about.

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.32.123) on Monday, April 14, 2003 - 06:10 pm:

Yan: The Futuretones performed a variety of songs: R&B, doo wop..., but Charles was known as a R&B singer and not the soul-shouter he became at Motown. Motown's M.O. was having singers blow in uncomfortable ranges and Hatcher sounded funny sometimes singing way up there. His Ric Tic releases were well like and all except the last one were big local hits.

The Metrotones, who recorded "Skitter Skatter," were led by Sonny Turner who later replaced Tony Williams in the Platters; Leonard Veal and Robert Shepherd (future Hesitations) were members too.

Turner came up on a street near the projects where the Hatcher's lived. Charles admired Turner (everyone did) and learned a lot from him. He also got schooled--after school--by his late mom who made him rehearse. (Told to me by a neighbor of the Hatcher's whose group was taught to sing harmony by Mrs. Hatcher.) This area was also the stomping grounds of Johnny Moore (Hornets, Drifters) and some of the Five Quails.

The Futuretones performed "Skitter Skatter" so often many think they recorded it; few locals remember the song they did record--"Roll On" on Tress Records. Ask somebody who saw the Futuretones' performed: what record did they make? And they'll usually say "Skitter Skatter," a staple of their shows.

The Futuretones was a hot band and throughout his career Edwin Starr was always backed by a hot band. Some of the most memorable were MotherBrainTree, which featured some future members of Kinsman Dazz and the Dazz Band, and Total Concept Unlimited who became Rose Royce.
