James and Philip Ingram are brothers from Akron, Ohio. Philip was a member of Switch and James has redeem himself with Quincy Jones and others.
Butch Ingram is from the Philadelphia area. He had pro basketball aspirations until he got injured at which point he ventured into music, first with a family group then as a producer.

There are actually two James Ingrams. The more popular is the singer-songwriter-keyboardist discovered by Quincy Jones and the other is part of the talented Ingram family from New Jersey which included James (Jimmy), John, Butch, Timmy and their late sister Barbara, the noted session singer. By the way, for those that have the VHS or DVD of the film "Dolemite", note that James Ingram (Quincy's James) appears in the film as the keyboard player for Revelation Funk, the band playing at Dolemite's club, The Total Experience.

I think the Ingrams, James, Butch, Barbara, etc. were from Camden, NJ, which is a bridge ride from Philly. I'm sure SoulPuss was talking about the more famous James Ingram from Akron, Ohio. Philip Ingram sang lead vocals with Switch along with the late Bobby Debarge.

Y'all: I was thinking of "Just Once" James Ingram.
I overlooked the Ingram Family. I recall their album cover with a picture of a castle turret in pastel colours.
The strength of the Soulful Detroit family comes to the rescue. We are dyed-in-wool soulsters.

Greg Williams also sang some leads with Switch.

RD: You mentioned Camden, NJ. This is where I ran across my first and only drive-thru record store. I don't know its present status. It was on Broadway.
Another piece of soul music trivia. Yes it was run by a brother.

Was the Ingram family out of New Jersey the same folks who recorded briefly for Hugo & Luigi's H&L Record label around 1977? I have a "sampler" of an album called "That's All" which had a nice Earth Wind & Fire vibe to it.

Ingram (the Ingram family from Camden) released Ingram Kingdom on Excello in 1976, That's All on H&L in 1977, Would You Like To Fly on Mirage in 1983, and Nightstalkers on Mirage in 1984. There are several compilations CDs out -- DJ's Delight featuring Ingram, and also a compilation of Butch's productions - The Best of Society Hill Records. Obviously ... I love their sound!

Hey RD: Is veteran dj. Chuck Conway,sr. still with us.
Whatever happened to James McCants (Akron). He was affiliated with Chicago Gangsters/ Sexual Harrasment and others. The last I heard through the grapevine, his studio burnt to the ground and he was thinking of relocating to the west coast. He was a cool bro.
How is Kermit (Euclid Av.). Has he lost any weight. Laugh!!
How is T's on Superior. Mrs. T. was always so nice to me.

SoulPuss you must have lived in Cleveland to ask those questions.
Chuck Conway Sr. is still alive I believe but I could be wrong on this, as he might have passed in 2002. He last lived in a senior high rise on 79th and Euclid and used a wheelchair to get around. Conway married into the Gordy family but not THE Gordy family. There are at least two set of Gordys in Detroit, one under Berry Gordy Sr. and the other under I think either his brother or cousin. His son Chuck Conway Jr. host a weekend oldies radio program.
James McCants and his Heat Empire blew up after a huge lawsuit with Time Traxx Productions that TTP won. Their biggest hit "Gentle (Calling Your Name)" by Frederick caused all sort of problems. Frederick was signed to Time Traxx and wouldn't sign with Heat and Janice Dowlin who duets with Frederick on the recording was signed to Time Traxx and not Heat. When the record hit Frederick and Janice didn't even appear together, though they were best friends. Heat sent Frederick out with Cleveland singer Evelyn Wright and Time Trax sent Janice out with Johnston Brown (a Heat recording artist). Dowlin has passed.
Kermit stills run the Dolls Rapids Creations record store. His weight looks about the same to me. Reminds you a little of Suge Knight doesn't he? Kermit was the first person I knew who had a CD. Janice, BTW, worked there before and after the "Gentle" debacle.
By Mrs. T do you mean the wife of Mr. T who ran an aquarium store in the front and made partial and full dental plates in the back? My late grandmother had her dental plate made there, said the man made good choppers. He's a legend in hood. Binky (the O'Jays) and Steve Harvey are from that Superior neighborhood.
Back to McCants I always wanted to ask him if he had anything on tape by Howard Hewitt, James Ingram, Philip Ingram, White Heat (an early incarnation of Switch sans the Debarge Brothers) and Ruby Nash. Since they were the only recording company in Akron you would think he would have some unreleased stuff on some of them.

Hi RD: I didn't reside in Cleveland but I've been around the block many, many times.
May the man above bless Chuck Conway,sr. wherever
he may be.
I do recall when "Gentle" was in heavy rotation on urban radio. It used to be a staple on Quiet Storm programs.
The Mrs. T. I was referring to, is the lady who ran a record one-stop years ago, called Superior One Stop. The last time i was at her place, she and her husband had converted it to a candy and pop store.
I presume Lynn Tolliver is still ruling the airwaves at WZAK. He is one down-to-earth bro.
