Hey folks, I asked this on the "Someday We'll Be Together" thread, but am really hoping for an answer, so... Are Maxine Waters the Congresswoman and Maxine Waters the singer the same person? Did she ever make any solo records? She should be President (the Congresswoman, that is..).

I've read several hunks of biographical info on her over the years and I've never found any mention of a musical background. I wish she was President right now

PS TO MARSHALL...WHILE MAXINE WATERS PROBABLY WON'T RUN FOR PRESIDENT...YOU CAN CERTAINLY FIND A HOME IN THE CAMP OF REV. AL SHARPTON...I'M SURE!!!...BUT I PERSONALLY ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT MINISTERS SHOULD STICK TO THE BUSINESS OF "SAVING SOULS"!!!...STU

mhc,
To answer your question -- as opposed to making several politically correct posts on my personal views of her -- no way are those Waters the same person.
Maxine Waters was on the L.A. session scene from the early sixties; claims that she and her sister Julia and brother Luther sang on things like "Be My Baby!"
Other great records they sang backup on: "Don't Stop the Music" by Yarbrough and Peoples; the great first obscure album by Coke Escovedo on Mercury; and they say they really hit it off with Gino Vannelli and worked with him a lot.
By Scratcher (65.132.76.145) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 11:34 am: |
As an African-American Stu, I don't share the same opinions of Maxine Waters as you. I don't feel she's telling minorities what you say she does at all. My perspective of her is 180 degrees from yours. But this is a music forum: Why should I know your opinion of Maxine Waters, why should you know mine?
By TonyRussi (68.18.49.228) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 11:37 am: |
Again, Stubass I agree with you.
By STUBASS (152.163.188.68) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 11:40 am: |
HEY SCRATCHER: I CERTAINLY RESPECT YOURS AND ANY OTHER OPINIONS...EVEN THOSE THAT ME BE IN CONTRAST TO MINE...HOWEVER...I DID NOT INITIATE THE TOPIC...ONLY RESPONDED TO OUR FRIEND MARSHALL'S REMARKS...WHICH FAIRNESS TO ALL POINTS OF VIEW WOULD CERTAINLY INDICATE IS APPROPRIATE!!!...TRUE TOLERANCE IS NOT JUST TOLERATING VIEWS WHICH AGREE WITH OUR OWN!!!...BY THE WAY...I DID MENTION "THE HARDEST WORKING MAN IN SHOW BUSINESS" IN MY POST...THE INCOMPARABLE...JAMES BROWN!!!...STU
By Scratcher (65.132.76.145) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 11:48 am: |
And I thought Marshall asked if the two Maxine Waters were the same person. Silly me.
I rather have young minorities look at Maxine Waters as role model than James Brown. Brown is a helluva entertainer but he's no role model.
Enough of my political views. This is not the appropriate place for them so I'll shut up on the subject. What started out as a music forum for serious fans and collectors has turned into something quite different.
By STUBASS (152.163.188.68) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:07 pm: |
GEEZ SCRATCHER...AND I THOUGHT THAT MARSHALL WAS HEADING UP HER PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE!!!...HOWEVER...THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY NOTES IN THE MUSICAL SCALE...AND WE ARE DISCUSSING MUSICAL SUBJECTS FROM 30 ODD YEARS AGO...WHICH IS NOT REALLY A GROWING AND EVOLVING SUBJECT...ONLY TAKES ON WHAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST...TO WHICH WE ALL SHARE A COMMON INTEREST IN DISCUSSING...AND HOPING THAT ANY TOPIC WITH SUCH LIMITS WOULD NOT AT SOME POINT IMPLODE ON ITSELF BY MAINTAINING A STRICT NARROW FOCUS!!!...AND SINCE WE CONSIDER OURSELVES A "FAMILY" HERE...THERE WILL ALWAYS BE TOPICS AND ISSUES WHICH MAY STRAY FROM A REGIMENTED FORMAT OF DISCUSSION...THAT IN *ANY* FAMILY WOULD OCCUR!!!...ONE ONLY HOPES THAT *ALL* DISCUSSION IS PURSUED IN A CIVIL AND RESPECTFUL MANNER WHICH IS INDICITIVE OF THEY TYPE OF PEOPLE THAT PARTICIPATE IN THIS FORUM!!!...THANKS...STU

STUBASS, I'LL TELL YOU FRANKLY THAT I HAVE NO INTEREST IN ENGAGING IN A DIALOGUE WITH YOU ABOUT ANY POLITICAL MATTER.

Marshall,
I don't know of any Maxine Waters solo records but she did make a few albums with her siblings
in the seventies on, I think, Blue Note.
One that's worth picking up if you ever come across it is an album on their own WaterWheel
label, issued in the late 80's / early 90's.
Can't remember the title offhand but it's a
good album.
I'd no idea Maxine had gone into politics -
as much a surprise as finding out that Barry
Melton, the guitarist for Country Joe and the Fish
is now a judge in San Francisco !

Stu,
Thanks - I'd read the post too quickly - and at
the risk of telling you something you already
know I'm afraid your posting in capitals makes
for difficult reading.
Have you thought about posting completely in lower case ? - it wouldn't take any more time and just might be a bit easier on the eyes - some of your longer posts are just so DENSE looking I find my eyes just sliding all the way from the beginning until the end and I end up not taking in what you're saying.
Anyway, that Waters album I mentioned is well
worth picking up - and that's what this forum was supposed to be about - music.

I posted another pic of them with Rudy on keyboards. Can't find it now!
Rudy was a total character.

Hey David Meikle. Thank you for that great shot you took of Rudy Robinson with Detroit vocalist Maxine Woods at BoMacs Jazz lounge in Downtown Detroit. It's hard to believe a year has past since Rudy made his transition from this earth but his spirit continues live thru all of us whose life he touched in so many ways. My name is Tonya and I sung in Rudy's group until his untimely death. The vocalist Maxine Woods is a legend on the Detroit music scene. She and Rudy were longtime friends and had worked together for many years in the Detroit. There is a vocalist named Maxine Waters not to be confused with Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Vocalist Maxine Waters along with her brothers and sisters are known for providing some of the finest background vocals on a majority of hits during the 70's and 80's. They were in much demand for studio session work. The last I heard they still reside in California. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Hi Tonya
Thanks for correcting me on the Maxine Woods picture and apologies to everyone for misleading them.
Tonya, it's going to be great meeting you and everyone else.
