Soulpuss....I'd have to disagree on a few of your choices. Based on the concept that though all "disco" is dance music, not all dance music is disco...I'd say the following are danceable R&B:
Party Down
Sugar Pie Guy
Hang On In There Baby

Hey Twicked: The line between disco and danceable R&B is a fuzzy one. Recall there was pop disco (Munich Machine productions for example) and there was R&B disco.

There were numerous soulful numbers that were huge in the discos. They filled the floors. Some examples were:

Veda Brown ...Shortstopping
B.B. King ... Friends
Jackie Moore ... Time / Sweet Charlie Babe
Detroit Emerald/ Damon Shawn ...Feel the need
Soulsearchers ...Boogie up the nation

I could go on forever.Bottom line they made you "Shake Your Booty". Remember bellbottoms, high platforms, gaudy polyester longsleeved shirts. Whew.

As far as Disco music goes, Harry Wayne Casey,K.C.(of & the Sunshine Band) wrote & produced some of the best.K.C. can't sing his way out of a wet paper bag but he sure knows how to make great(and soulful) dance records.Besides his own records he made great records with Betty Wright, Jimmie "Bo" Horne, George McCrae & Gwen McCrae.K.C. grew up digging Motown.

The Originals' "Down To Love Town" is another great disco song.

The Miracles' "Love Machine"

Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way"

David Ruffin's "Walk Away From Love" is one of those songs that straddles the line. I guess it's disco, I'm not sure.

Sylvia's "Automatic Lover"

The cool thing about most of the songs mentioned in this thread is that these songs are danceable, but strong, talented, soulful vocalists are singing them.

Esther Phillips - What a Difference A Day makes..one of the best songs to be remade into disco not like that shlock Ethel Merman and Frankie Avalon did although his remake of Venus wasnt bad.
Frankie Valli - Swearing to God..
Disco brought some comebacks for people....

I love you sooooo much Stephanie for mentioning Vickie Sue Robinson!! You beat me to it!! May her soul rest...

Frankie Avalon-Swearin' to God, I still love that song and The Great "Little" Esther Phillips version of "What A Difference" is a beautiful remake from a beautiful person..You are the best Steph..

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sly fan (67.115.72.219) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 06:39 pm:

Nish, very interesting...you mentioned David Ruffin's "Walk Away From Love" as being a disco song...

A lot of the records mentioned on here are considered Disco by some and Funk or Soul by others..it all depends on the person's perception and the sound also. "Walk Away" could be considered Disco in its early stages for the fact that Van Mccoy produced it while hot off the tracks from the success of "The Hustle" but that song is clearly a R&B/Soul classic but it can be interchangable. There are a lottta great records like that..

While certain records such as "Love To Love You" or "Knock On Wood (Ammi Stewart's version), "Fly, Robin, Fly" are clearly disco records.. its all in the style.

"Everything's Coming Up Love" by Mr. Ruffin is a great record, as a matter of fact that WHOLE album is GREAT!!

Boogie on Catfish!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Nish (216.148.246.134) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 07:04 pm:

Steph - you HAVE to love a name like "Sexolettes"... it's cute in a perverse kind of way.

Sly Fan - as I typed in "Walk Away From Love" I was a little hesitant, because sometimes I think it's R&B/Soul, and then I think it's disco. It's something about the percussive feel of the song that makes me think it's disco. I don't know.

Not to get into the hermeneutics of disco, but what is the song that people point to as one of the starting points of disco? Certainly MFSB figures prominently in this.

Can anyone out there tell me the difference between "Freestyle" and "Disco"? They sound very similar to me. Freestyle came along about 10 years or so after Disco's demise. Expose is one of the great "Freestyle" groups. I always thought Freestyle WAS Disco....just remnents of it? Whatever....I liked both!

Side note: Who was Sugar Pie DeSota? I think that's how you spell her name? What kind of music did she sing and what was her voice like? I've seen CD'S and her name intrigued me.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sly fan (63.207.60.81) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 01:09 am:

Nish: I feel what your are saying for sure..its all up the perception of the listener and the groove behind the song as well.. As far as the first Disco song..I have heard so many different stories behind that claim but I would have to go with MFSB's "Love Is The Message" as being the one that opened the door as it did for House music(which is an extension of disco) as well..

Breathtakingguy..Great topic..Freestyle its an extension of Disco..The freestyle roots stem from a lot of the very electronic (as James Brown would call it "a band in a box")type Disco songs that came out in the latter part of the 70's. The people really deserve the credit for opening the door for that type of sound would be Giorgio Mororder, The Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk. Early "Freestyle" records would be songs like "I like what you are doing to me" by Young and Company, "Computer Game" Yelow Magic Orchestra etc. Now keep in mind, this is post the Disco era we are talking about. Then around 82' a genetlemen by the name of (The Great One)Afrika Bammbataa who put out the classic Hip-Hop song called "Planet Rock" now by then you had what was created by Bam and The Great Arthur Baker called "Electro Funk" which was a combination of the Kraftwerk sound in conjuction to a Hip-Hop styled beat. Now by 85, 86...the electro funk sound was exploding all over the place along with House music. Groups like Expose', Stevie B, TKO, Debbie Deb, etc were household names in the Freestyle scene..Also I have to give props to the "Godfather of Freestyle"..a man by the name of Pretty Tony (Miami) who elevated "Freestyle" to another level and made it a household name. Freestyle holds the same principles of Disco its just more electronics and with an elecro funk vibe..

Sly Fan ... I love that first album CHA did for RCA. Although I discovered the band because, as you mentioned, they were on De-Lite & I loved K&TG as well as the Kay-Gees, so I dropped $6 on their "Do it Your Way" album & never looked back.

Their music would cut from straight disco to disco-funk. Na Na Hey Hey, Foxy Lady, Music is the World & Far Out ... are The Funk.

Ever heard a group Made in the USA? They put out an alright album on De-lite around '78, featuring the CHA horns. There's one great one on there, but it wasn't the minor-hit "Melodies"

Brass Construction (like BT Express) were the BOMB !!! That entire first album rocks - Movin, Peekin, Love, Dancin, Changin. Just as funky as it was danceable. I love the 2nd albumn with Ha Cha Cha, Get to the Point, Screwed, What on Your Mind. Unfortunately, each successive album seemed to come up a little short of the one before it. III was OK (L-O-V-E-U). But after the disappointing IV, I stopped buying. "First Time Around" & a couple others from Skyy's first album (1979) feature music that sounds like it could have come straight outta a BC session..

BT Express / Brass Construction / Skyy / Mandrill - Brooklyn in the House - I'm guessing the the West Indian population in Brooklyn contributed heavily to the blending of funk & disco.

Galaxy, I'm not thinking of the cut by War, this one is from '80 but I can't bring up the correct title, but I can hear the tune clear as a bell in my head. "Galaxy of Love", maybe? Absolutely one of their best.

I love Galaxy by War as well, seems like everybody was headed to outer-space at the time.

Peace - from another Sly Fan

Hey breathtakinguy, Sugar Pie DeSanto is a fine R & B, Soul, Blues singer. She had a few hits in the 60's on Chess/Checker Records. I have her CD that includes "SoulFull Dress" and "Slip-in Mules" which were 2 chart hits around '64, '65.She had been part of the James Brown Revue in early 60's.She was very petite but a big voice. Was Barry White's group "Love Unlimited" considered disco? Smooth singers nonetheless!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sly fan (63.207.60.181) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 02:56 pm:

You are too cool Rich!! Yeah as the 70's drew to a close a lotta those bands lost their heat due to the electronic thing with Disco..You have the CHA album on RCA, I am so jealous!!(LOL!!) I have never seen the LP only the single..you scored major!! The Kay Gees (Kool and The Gang Jr.s) were a hot group too!! BT and Brass were very hot groups that I STILL listen too.

As for SKYY, the reason why they had that Brass Construction sound is because Randy Miller was BC's Producer and Lead Singer who later went to produce SKYY. Another great group..

Well, the blending of Funk and Disco was partly due to label trends at the time and groups wanting to blend sounds in general. Although, they were crusaders who refused to give in to Disco such as EWF, Cameo, P-Funk, SLY, Larry Graham, etc.. Disco was cool but the Funk is a higher plane w/o a doubt.

Peace and Keep The Music Alive!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sly fan (63.207.60.181) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 03:04 pm:

Blueskies: LA's own Love Unlimited were not considered Disco, just great singers who did background vocals for all of Barry White albums as well as their own Lp's. They were another group that I still love listening to. They would be considered R&B/Soul.

Sugar Pie DeSanto does back flips at 70? Good Lord, I can barely get out of a chair at 54! You go girl!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Scratcher (65.132.78.86) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 07:35 pm:

Hindsight, if you click the link to the site I posted and view the video you'll see Sugar Pie Desanto doing a back flip. Unlike, some singers she didn't do drugs, drink a lot, or have many, in any, bad habits. She's still almost as slim as she was when she was in her twenties.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Scratcher (65.132.78.86) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 08:07 pm:

BTW, Sugar Pie Desanto is not 70. Somebody else said that, she's in her sixties, probably early sixties. She started singing and recording when she was a teenager.

Top of pageBottom of page   By TonyRussi (68.210.2.104) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 09:06 am:

BTW & Scratcher...I don't know how old Sugar Pie DeSanto is I was just guessing that she must be closer to 70.I can't do a split anymore & I'm 52 so if she is doing backflips at 60 "You Go Girl!!".It still amazes me the energy James Brown & Tina Turner have.Speaking of James Brown he will be here in Orlando May 3rd at the House of Blues.

MotownForever:
Touch's "Energizer" was a classic that should've been a bigger hit. Tom Moulton was the engineer & mixer.

Maybe Dennis Coffey could tell us more about CJ & Co's "Devil's Gun" since he & Mike Theodore produced that classic for Westbound Records.

Mighty Clouds Of Joy's "Mighty High" got mucho play on the family stereo (no suprise, being that my Dad was a Baptist minister!).

The rest of your list is a dancer's dream.

Sly,

Man I still miss that place; the music, the memories and the great times I had there will always remain with me. There's never been any club like the Garage.

I listed a lot of the 70's stuff Larry played but not all 'cos I thought the list was long enough as it was!! If you'd like I'd list some of the 80's dance stuff Larry played at Garage since you mentioned Loose Joints, Peech Boys, Black Mamba, & D Train (all of which were played quite a bit at the Garage).

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sly fan (64.165.226.128) on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 04:58 pm:

MotownForever:WOW..There are people who still hold that spot as sacred to this day..Its almost like a religion and folks get really emotional when I mention that spot...Studio 54 was cool but The Paradise Garage was where it was at!! Larry was a GENIUS!!!

Naw,,its cool.. the 80's list would be forever too..You rule!!

Sly:

Here's the majority of the stuff I heard @ the Garage during the 80's. Of course, Larry would still play his 70's classics, and on some nights we would be treated to anything from "Mary Don't You Weep" by Aretha to "Band Of Gold" by Freda Payne to "As" by Stevie Wonder, etc. Levan exposed us to all different types of sounds by not only giving his crowd the best in underground disco/dance music, but he also turned me on to jazz, gospel, DOR, rock, reggae - you name it. I still miss him! RIP Larry
