I'M SURE MOST OF YOU REMEMBER SOME MEMORABLE COMEBACK BY A SINGER THAT THE PUBLIC THOUGHT HAD THROWN IN THE TOWEL. SOME I RECALL WERE:

BEN E. KING...SUPERNATURAL THING
DAVID RUFFIN ...WALK AWAY FROM LOVE
SHIRLEY GOODMAN ...SHAME, SHAME, SHAME

ANYMORE COMEBACKS COME TO MIND?

I wouldnt say the public threw the towel at them, they just stopped having hits. Because a lot of these acts were still active musically.

David Ruffin's "Walk Away" really wasnt a comeback record, it was a HIT for him that he hadnt seen in awhile but he was still putting out records.

Now to me, the ULTIMATE come back was when Rick James (who never gets his due for this and he should for at least producing a hit for them)got all the original Tempts together to do "Standing On The Top" which evolved into a full reunion album for the Tempts. That song is a monster!! I still love it!!

Clarence Carter "Strokin"

The "Maestro" Barry White "Practice What You Preach"

I would have to say Santana and Smooth on the album Supernatural and Gene Chandler Groovy Situation....

WOW!! Good Call Steph!! Especially for Carlos Santana who is a criminally underated guitarist...I was gonna post Gene Chandler too but his big come back was for the 1978 hit "Get Down".

Also for all my Chi-Towns heads..we cant forget the Chi Lites with "Hot On a Thing".

The disco era ushered in several comebacks or introduction to a new generation of listeners/dancers.Remember the following:

Arthur Prysock ... When love is new
Lou Rawls ... You'll never find another love like mine
Frankie Valli... Swearin' to God
Ethel Merman, Percy Faith, Frankie Avalon jumped on the wagon too.

Detroits own Jackie Wilson- "Your Love Keeps Lifting me Higher". One of the greatest songs of all time along with the music of the Funk Brothers

In adition the Four Tops- "When She Was My Girl". Another great song that brought the Four Tops another number one song on the soul charts.

How about Walter Jackson with "Magic Man" and Ashford & Simpson's beautiful "Love Woke Me Up This Morning" and Brook Benton with "Rainy Night In Georgia", after a long stint off of any charts.

I know I'm going to misspell it...
....has anyone mentioned Johnny Mistro? There's got to be some kind of record for gaps between hits from "16 Candles" to "Worst That Can Happen"

Top of pageBottom of page   By TonyRussi (68.210.2.104) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 12:57 pm:

Yea, douglasm, that was quite a gap from the Crests to the Brooklyn Bridge...I think his last name is spelt Maestro. He must have been real young on "16 Candles" that was an oldie when I started buying records in '61.

Herb Alpert "Rise"

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 01:57 pm:

Sly,
Good choice. I'll tel you a little Herb Alpert story. I was down in L.A. visiting my brother when the annual Audio show was taking place. My brother wanted me to go with him even though I lacked the necessary ticket to get in. Russ said not to worry about it. We got to the convention site and entered the lobby. Russ asked me who I wanted to work for. I told him A&M records. He asked me if I wanted to be head of A&R. I asked if it paid well and he assured me it did. So somehow Russ finagled admission for me with a badge that had my name on it along with " Head of A&R..A&M Records" on it. During our visit I was asked by many people how things were going at A&M. I assured them all was fine. And THEN....who do we run into and have a conversation with...?? None other than Herb Alpert. The whole time I have my arms crossed covering my badge. Oh what a tangled web we weave....

Folks who have made impressive comebacks to me:
Tina Turner (1984)
Herb Alpert (1979)
The Four Seasons (1975 - "Who Loves You" threw many of my fellow Four Seasons fans for a loop)
Frankie Valli (same year as Four Seasons - "My Eyes Adored You")
Lou Rawls (1976 - thank you, Gamble & Huff)
Ronnie Spector (1986 - duet on Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby")
Eric Carmen (1987 - "Hungry Eyes")
The Contours (1988 - "Do You Love Me" on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack - song made the Top 40 twice as a result)
Bill Medley (1974 - "Rock & Roll Heaven" w/Righteous Bros.; 1988 - "I've Had The Time Of My Life")
Tom Jones (1988 - "Kiss")
Barry White (1997 - "Practice What You Preach")

RECENT COMEBACKS!
Solomon Burke (latest album won rave reviews & a Grammy Award)
Daryl Hall & John Oates (#1 hit on Adult Contemporary radio and hot selling album)
Rod Stewart (album of jazz standards selling like crazy)

And finally, a group that released an album in the 1960s as Earl Van Dyke & the Soul Brothers who played on more number one hits than the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and God knows who else...

Detroit's pride & joy - The Funk Brothers.

When Arthur Prysock came out with When Love Is New I almost fell to the floor that was such a great record and it went up the disco charts and did very well...

Isnt that a great record Steph (When Love Is New)??? When I first heard it I was like wow this is a beautiful song and Mr. Prysock is so smooth on that record!!

We cannot forget "Coolin' Out" by The "Iceman" Jerry Butler!!

I love Philly!!

Sly,
I guess my secret remained just that but I was starting to feel a little stupid standing there talking with my arms permanently folded across my chest. In retrospect, I don't know why I didn't just show ol' Herb what I was up to. He was a real nice guy and probably would have laughed. He might have even offered me the job I was pretending to have.

Ralph: Wow, it was worth the try, I think he wouldve laughed too.

Vickie: "You Beat Me To The Punch", I was gonna put Marvin on there. Good Call, that was the greatest comeback in my opinion..

Sunnyla: I second that..w/o a doubt.

Another great comeback: Bill Withers "Just The Two Of Us".

Speaking of comebacks, has anyone seen the Daryl Hall and John Oates Live special thats been playing on tv in the last few days? They take requests and play their songs. What talent!!
No pyro-tecnics,no jumping around,no big chorus to cover a singers lack of talent.
What you hear is an extremly talented group about as soulful as a group can be.
They haven,t lost a thing in all these years!!

I think one of the greatest comebacks besides the ones mentioned is Dionne Warwick. When she went from Scepter to Warner Bros even though she produced a couple of a couple of great albums (Track of the Cat, Love at First Sight come to mind) she did not have much success on the label besides Then Came You with the Spinners. Many years had gone by and she not had a solo hit single. Clive Davis brought her to Arista and had Barry Manilow produce her first album and she had a platinum selling, 2 Grammy winning album. She was back on top with another signature song, "I'll Never Love This Way Again."

I was just getting ready to mention Dionne's comeback. Not only did she come back with the platinum album DIONNE, but she gained a lot of new fans hosting SOLID GOLD.

Lynn Bruce:
Check out Hall & Oates' new CD "Do It For Love" which returns H&O to their rock/soul roots. They did a sold-out show here in NYC at the Beacon Theatre a few weeks ago and they were fantastic.

Cleo/Michael & Reese:
How about Dionne's classic "Deja Vu" which is still played on Adult Contemporary and Rhythm & Blues radio stations to this day.

How about Detroits own Mary Wilson of the Supremes. On a smaller scale, she recorded and released her CD "Walk The Line" in 1992 ,then blew us all away with her knockout performance on the then popular Arsenio Hall Show. She has a brand new CD she's recording in Detroit that will be released later this year.

Wilbert Harrison - Let's Work Together, 1970
Donnie Elbert - Where Did Our Love Go, 1971

Both artists had been absent from the (pop) charts for over 10 years before scoring these hits.

I have Mary's "Walk The Line" CD - she gave me an autographed copy when she visited the record store I managed in 1992. It was indeed an impressive album and her Arsenio appearance was great. Meeting her face-to-face with CD in hand was priceless (kinda made me wish I was a few years older.... :) )
