Mel, are you sure that the O'Jays' "Pretty Words," "A Blowing Wind," "No Time For You" and "It Won't Hurt" are Pied Piper Productions? Jack Ashford did co-write a song titled "Pretty Words" but it was a different song than the one the O'Jays recorded and the first two I listed are definite H. B. Barnum Productions.

RD,
As far as I know they are pied piper productions, but going by my track record, then I could be wrong.
I amsure someone will be able to confirm it one way or the other.
David,
great scans mate.

Strange, it says A Wri-Han Production then at the bottom it says Herb Williams and in parentheses Pied Piper, which I believe indicates Williams (a musician) worked for Pied Piper Prod. Who were the principals of Wri-Han Productions?

"It Won't Hurt" is a great record led by Eddie Levert and written by Pam Sawyer and Lori Burton.

Herbie Williams arranged a significant amount of songs in Detroit, working with Lorraine Chandler, Jack Ashford, Don Davis amongst others.

Wri-Han may be Ed Wri(ght) of Minit records and songwriter Larry Han(cock). Wright produced the O'Jays "Working on your case" and Hancock co-wrote it with O'Jay Bobby Massey.

I was under the impression that Wright produced the top side of that 45 too, "Hold on", but I've seen it mentioned that it was Herbie Williams.

Ed Wright co-produced other memorable material with Jimmy Holiday, Gene Dozier and Herb Santifer at the classic Minit set-up on Sunset Boulevard.

Right, Wri-Han is undoubtably Ed Wright, who at one time was a disk jockey and Larry Hancock who co-wrote the A-Side of "Hold On"--"Working On Your Case." I have the 45 in front of me and both sides are credited to Ed Wright (producer) and Herbie Williams (arranger).

Hi Mel and all others,

When I was collecting the Giant label, it was a mess. My "want list" then told everybody I had Giant 707. To me it was "I've Been Turned On" by Jo Armstead... to others it was Tony Hestor: "Just Can't Leave You" b/w "Watch Yourself".

Giant1.jpg

I later found out that it was two different Giant labels around... one Detroit and one Chicago label... with same numbering system! And Mike Terry's name was on both labels!

Giant2.jpg

Crazy! I never found Tony Hestor on Giant 707 because of that. I didn't know I was looking for it. This was also before the "Nothern Soul" craze in England.

Giant2.jpg

But I was also looking for another label: Karate records... and one day, many years ago, I found Karate 523. That was, and still is, a hell of a record. Thanks Jack Ashford, Lorraine Chandler, Mike Terry and The Pied Piper Productions for all the great music you made.
