Clarence Avant & the late Ewart Abner (Motown's president at that time) were the executive producers, so the film is probably either in the hands of Motown, Clarence's Avant-Garde or Paramount Pictures. Maybe our dear friend Mr. Weinger can help locate this great concert film.
Sammy Davis. Jr singing "I Gotta Be Me" with a jazz trio and no orchestration was my favorite point of the film.

Yes I did see the Sammy Davis Jr. tribute. It was probably the first time in my life that someone got it right - honoring our legends before they go to the other side.
Sammy's dancing with Gregory which ended with Mr. Hines kissing his feet was a stunning moment in the special. Sammy was indeed passing the torch to Gregory.
Your brother did a righteous job on that show - I don't know if I could've worked on the special without breaking down, knowing that one of my heroes won't be around much longer.

Imagine the scene, we're fast approaching Baghdad with a (lightning speed) blitzkrieg, and here they come...
...With a SWARM of incoming 'Apaches'; 'B-2's; 'Stealth Bombers'; the lunching of hundreds of 'cruise' missiles and 'Tomahawks', 'B-1's; and, of course, the ever fearful 'drone' of those massive powerful 'B-52's as they begin 'carpet-bombing' the Iraqi landscape into smoldering embers and burning dust--
Well, here's one lyrical 'swansong' (it's from 1968) that would have to be, the quintessential SADAM HUSSEIN *HIT*:
I am the GOD OF HELL FIRE, and I bring you--
Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fire, I'll take you to learn
I'll see you burn
You fought hard and you saved and earned
But all of it's going to burn
And your mind, your tiny mind
You know you've really been so blind
Now's your time, burn your mind
You're falling far too far behind
Oh no, oh no, oh no, yu're gonna burn
Fire, to destroy all you've done
Fire, to end all you've become
I'll feel you burn
You've been living like a little girl
In the middle of your little world
nd your mind, your tiny mind
You know you've really been so blind
Now's your tme, burn your mind
You're falling far too far behind
OOhhh
Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fir, I'll take you to learn
You're gonna burn, you're gonna burn
You're gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn--
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha, Ha, Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha,
Fire, I'll take you to burn
Fire, I'll take you to learn
Fire to destroy all you've done
I'll feel you burn.
Sadam Hussein, and those that 'worshipped' you-- they'll see 'you' in hell.

The Bush administration's claims that the Iraqui citizenry would "throw flowers" at the invading U.S. military have turned out to be bullshit.

I think it's rather interesting that the Middle East despots always spout venom at the West whilst they covet the materialism of the West. They wouldn't think twice of ordering a dozen Rolls Royce, Bentleys, Hummers, latest PCs, dvds, sega, playstation etc.
It would be quite a switch for Sadam to lead the spartan life of Osama. I can imagine Sadam sleeping in a cave on goatskins. What a shift from his Posturepedic, 240 thread per inch percale sheets, goosedown duvet.

I don't want to get involved in politics in this forum - especially being a citizen of a country that has been attacked many times and have relatives died in those acts - but this piece of a news was too precious to pass:
Mr. Saddam Hussein has the keys to the city of Detroit. A priest called Jacob Yasso visited him in Bagdad in 1980 with the key.
So if Saddam wants to escape, one place he can come to is Detroit.

If you ask me the forum's topics should just adhere to discussion of music. I am not one who enjoys becoming hijacked by non-constructive idle chatter and opinions which are no more important or valid than anyone else's.

Julian,
The wise crack by Bored Watcher did not go un noticed by me. I figured it was border line rude and decided to let it stand. Maybe the person was making a statement of sorts. As moderator I feel I must allow for a certain amount of slack. Also, as moderator I feel that it is important to let threads ebb and flow as they seem to do here. I think we are a rather unique group of individuals and all that have come here seem to feel the same and catch the spirit of the place. No matter what you may think, it seems to me you won't find a more comprehensive site relating to our interests anywhere on the internet. Where else can you find the likes of various Funk Brothers, artists, writers, producers, engineers, AND....Paulie 3 Shoes???

Julian's right, there are too many silly threads that clog the place up and make it so you can't find the actual, informative threads.
Have you seen a Funk Brother here lately? Many of the posters with real information have moved on. I tried to find the "Funk Bros. in concert" thread last week to post all the concerts, but after wading through "big teeth" and "fat but can dance" and others I gave up. Some of the offbeat stuff should be merged into one big silly thread.
By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Sunday, March 30, 2003 - 04:09 pm: |
Sue,
Don't be such a worry wart. The Funks have been a little busy lately and there absence of late has nothing to do with the content of the forum. In all things there must be balance. I know that I wouldn't be here if this was not so. The place would get a little dull I think if we didn't have the variety and sometmes quirkiness that exists here. there are a lot of sharp people here that are somewhat more than linear thinkers and I can only repeat...that is what makes this place special. Hang in there. SD will continue to grow and draw the best in the busness.

P.S.
To make my point, just look at the top twenty threads at the time of this posting. Pretty good stuff and I was able to get to the Funk Brothers thread without wading.

Ralph, obviously more than a few of us think the balance has tilted way too far in the direction of ridiculous threads. And you're assuming I don't talk to any of the Funks. They actually haven't been that busy lately; rehearsals for the tour don't start til next week.
Where's SteveS? Vickie? Dennis Coffey? Many of us just aren't interested in those threads.

Sue,
Everyone can pick and choose the threads they find interesting. Now quit worrying about it.

Sue, David, and Ralph,
I'm not trying to suggest others how to run their board, so please, I'm not suggesting anything.
But maybe there needs to be more of a regulated 'control' of placing only the more relevant topics pertaining the subject matter, on this site.
I used to participate in another forum in which topical threads and 'questions' posed to registered participants were 'drummed up' by the site's choosing, and only the site's moderators discretion.
That's how 'questions' were governed there, they controlled it-- not the participants-- such as it was (and still is)in the discussion forum under http://www.historychannel.com.
Another feature there, in order that you may participate, you must first 'sign in', log in with a 'password', and then you may post under your registered 'assumed' name (mine was under the name 'Hist.Revisionist') thereafter, your were allowed to 'post' under whatever topic you so desired to partake of the 'relevant' discussion the site's moderators would choose to interact for the discussion participation.
Of course, I've literally saved (and printed) all my 'threads' I've accumulated with three years of my participation there, and 'my discussion' paperwork have accumulated to the height of two thick telephone books-- I lived on that site, night and day, literally!
But once they 'removed' the JFK assassination thread for good, and kept the other "BS" threads, I haven't been back there ever since.
Sometime thereafter I soon learned the (heated) JFK question on that site was dropped (while keeping 'Sports', 'ww2', 'Religion', and other subjects untouched) and this only came, so I told after Gerald Posner was hired on to be on their 'advisory board', to serve as 'consultant' for the History Channel.
Didn't like it, and too bad-- that's the way it was, that's how they chose to end 'the' discussion, really, after three years of my direct discussion participation.
But currently the 'History Channel' will post a new 'question' for discussion, for a short time only, it will then notify participants when the thread will be 'removed' (in the event you wish to print any of your threads) then it is dropped from the 'discussion' forum altogether... this after having it posted, I believe, for something like thirty days?
But that's the way http://www.historychannel.com runs their discussion forum, and they control what is, and how long it is to be discussed, and the public, well... they should only be encouraged, to just 'fill in' the blanks.

Ralph and David,
Again, you run the site as you see fit, please... not suggesting you do anything, just lending information how another site regulates their very own discussion quorum, in contrast....
But just the way it is, we can only thank you, for www.soulfuldetroit.com!

Jim,
We appreciate your gratitude pal. I think it should be mentioned that both David and I must work for a living besides dealing with the business of Soulful Detroit. There are just so many hours in the day. I still contend that there is variety here and we are all free to choose to participate in whatever subject interests us.

Now that the dust has settled, here is my take on the so-called "quirky" threads of Soulpuss.
The site was boring. Plain and simple.
By David Meikle (213.122.67.167) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 07:51 am: |
Yes, I found the forum boring back then - lasted about a week - not bad in eighteen months.
It is now back to full force and is educating people worldwide on the forgotten heroes of Soul.
Thanks to everyone involved in this ongoing process.
Long live SoulfulDetroit!
By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 08:35 am: |
We rather liked our "boring" Soulful Detroit, Soulpuss.
By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 08:36 am: |
p.s. Having Deke Richards detail the making of Jackson 5 and Diana Ross records, from the inside; having Funk Brothers comment on SITSOM, as well as their past projects; having international researchers swap information -- hmm, that's boring, eh?

HEY SOULPUSS: DON'T FEEL TOO BAD MY FRIEND!!!...I'M SLIGHTLY CONFUSED (A COMMMON STATE FOR ME)...BUT DOESN'T THE "MARKET" SORT THESE THINGS OUT!!!...IF YOU START A THREAD...AND NOBODY IS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN IT...THAN IT SHOULD DIE A SLOW...OR EVEN FAST DEATH!!!...YOU HAVE OVER 100 BYTES ON THIS ONE...SO PEOPLE...DESPITE WHAT THEY SAY...ARE PARTICIPATING IN IT!!!...I ONCE STARTED A THREAD..."PICKERS AND STRUMMERS"...COMPARING THE STYLES OF VARIOUS GUITAR PLAYERS...WHICH WAS SUMMARILY BAGGED ON...EVEN BY MY OWN BROTHER...AND TO THIS DAY...I SWEAR THAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING DISCUSSION...BUT SINCE OTHERS APPARENTLY DIDN'T...IT GOT THE KAVORKIAN TREATMENT!!!...PARTICIPANTS WILL DECIDE IF A THREAD IS WORTHY OR NOT...BY THEIR PARTICIPATION OR LACK THEREOF!!...IF I START A THREAD ABOUT GROWING TOMATOS...I WOULD EXPECT IT TO BE LARGELY IGNORED...THUS DYING ON THE VINE...SO TO SPEAK!!!...SINCE WE HAVE MODERATORS...AND NOT "GRAND POOBAWS" OF CENSORSHIP...WE ARE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN OR IGNORE THREADS...TOPICS...AND EVEN PEOPLE...AND WHAT MIGHT BE IRRELEVANT TO SOME PEOPLE...MAY BE AN INTERESTING TOPIC TO OTHERS...SO SON'T SWEAT IT...YOU WIN SOME AND YOU LOSE SOME!!!...STU

Soulpuss:
As Stu said, not every thread is gonna be a winner but not every thread is a loser.
I posted one regarding the Rare Earth label that received a few responses (thanks, Ralph - for the info you posted on there). Yet look at the one you did for Disco music - folks are still posting on that thread.
Don't be discouraged and don't give up - as long as it's related to great soul music from Detroit (or great music, period!) - keep posting and keep learning.
Regards,
Kevin Goins - KevGo

DAMN!!!
By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 02:27 pm: |
Thanks guys,
This has aways been my attitude here. If a thread is liked it will become popular. If not it will wither and die. Stu is right on the money. As moderator, I moderate. I don't, and will never, dictate what we choose to talk about here. Despite the displeasure of a few, it seems to me we keep growing and meeting new friends here. just because certain people haven't been seen recently doesn't mean they aren't coming back. Those that don't like this format are most certainly welcome to leave here. Personally, I'm very comfortable with it and look forward to every new day to see what has been posted.
By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Tuesday, April 01, 2003 - 07:19 pm: |
Thanks Ralph,
But although I don't agree with the predominance of silly topics, I am made to feel welcome here by David and Lowell, the owners of the site, so I will still occasionally read and maybe post. I think we all know, for all time, where you guys stand.
