To be fair, I can't imagine that it was ever very hard to hire an incredible new lead singer for the Drifters or the Temptations after the groups had become world famous! The real challenge is finding a truly great singer who is willing to forgo a solo career and take a chance on an unknown group.

If U really think about it, there R so many, we could never name them all. When something is that good, there shouldn't B any competition.
A certain Detroit DJ used 2 have a "Star Wars" competition and listeners would call in an vote who was the better singer or group, I used 2 HATE that. We have so many artists, that we could never count them all, then again maybe we can, because they don't make them like they used 2. (LOL)

What about the great lost soul solo artists like the late great Walter Jackson, Sammy "Baby"Ambrose, Little Jimmy Scott, Timothy Wilson, Joe Hinton, and the oh so soulful Derek Martin! Does anyone have any info. on Derek or his few rare gems he recorded? What about Tommy Hunt among the more obscure artists? Or how about lost soul groups like The Realistics. SoulPuss the records are identical, it's the same track. I have no idea how or why this cameabout. But the Realistics singing on that record are really a group called the Sensations who is thought to have originally hailed from somewhere in Michigan (not Detroit).
Way Out was owned by the late Lester Johnson (numbers runner) and Bill Branch (policeman)--talk about an odd partnership. At one time Johnson hit a few notes with Ben Iverson & the Hornets.
By Soulpuss (24.102.217.36) on Monday, April 07, 2003 - 11:36 pm: |
Scratcher: I forgot about Lester Johnson. The label was based on 55th St. at one time. Years ago, I met Bill Branch. He is a brown skin African American detective. He lived in the suburbs surrounded by mostly whites.
After I found a copy of the Delite pressing, I immediately phoned Bill, but was never able to speak with him directly. It was a case of always leaving messages on an answering machine and having no calls returned. I was gonna ask him about the events leading up to the song being on Delite under a differently named group.I simply left the matter on the backburner.
I love the song.

The Realistics..I remember it being an east coast hit it had to be either 1966,67.or68(?) It was a favorite of mine, I always wondered if they recorded any other gems...? For Medusa; The tunes youmentioned by The Manhattans were not done by "Smitty"the original lead singer but by Gerald about a year after Smitty's death for There's No Me Without You. Gerald is again singing lead with Blue doing the bass parts.I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about The Manhattans.
By RD (63.188.32.64) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 12:47 am: |
SoulPuss: Bill Branch owns and runs Art's Seafood now. You described him perfectly.
Lester Johnson was a real nice guy. Bill Branch is more standoffish and talking about Way Out Records or the music business is not on his list of favorite conversations. He puts everybody off when approach with the subject.
The Sensations/Realistics recorded other tunes, most notably "Got To Find Myself Another Girl."
Soul Sister, George "Smitty" Smith and the Manhattans recorded some memorable songs that were not only big on the east coast but the midwest too. My favorites were "Follow Your Heart," "Can I," "Baby I'm Sorry," "Baby, I Need You," "When We Were Made As One," "Call Somebody Please," "Till You Come Back To Me," "I'm The One Love Forgot" and "I Call It Love."

RD; You are so right about Smitty's hits, they were my favorites too( I was living with him until he passed away on December 16,1970, actually I stayed on with his Mom for a couple of years after that. Thanks for remembering "Smitty". The east coast hit I was speaking of was The Realistics "Please Baby Please"great song! I'd like to add to your list of Smitty's: Ïf My Heart Could Speak", "Give Him Up", "The Picture Became Quite Clear","From Atlanta To Goodbye", and Smitty's own personal favorite Älone On New Years Eve".
By RD (63.188.32.129) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 11:17 pm: |
I forgot about the Deluxe sides, the ones you mentioned and "It's Gonna Take a Lot to Bring Me Back," the A-Side of "Give Him Up." Ditto for "Alone on New Years Eve," a read sad one; and lest not forgot "Til You Come Back To Me" also done by Lee Williams & the Cymbals.
Did the Realistics make any appearances in your area? "Please Baby Please" was actually done by a Michigan group who recorded in Ohio called the Sensations. I've heard the so called "Realistics'" recording and it's the same track.
By Soulpuss (24.102.217.36) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 11:33 pm: |
Hey gang: whilst going through my 45's I came across "Please baby please" on Delite by the New Cymbals . Release date is 1972. It sounds identical to the Sensations on WayOut.
I'm not so sure I have the Realistics single as I have this feeling what my memory latched onto was in fact the version by the New Cymbals. Surprises never cease with me as I have not gone through all my singles. I might still turn up the Realistics version.
By RD (63.188.32.129) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 11:41 pm: |
Interesting, the Realistics' release of the song was on the Delite family of labels too. It was a local hit in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and a few other cities in the sixties by the Sensations. It's funny how they took the Sensations' track and stuck other groups' names on it. Twice it seems, the songwriters should be John Washington and Rod Simmons. Though they could be new recordings but identical clones. Does the New Cymbals' named one you have SP have the flourishing horn opening?
By Soul Sister (65.43.153.219) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 11:53 pm: |
RD; Iwas all around the chitlin'circuit back then but never did see the Realistics on any bill. On The Manhattans To Bring Me Back Baby each member of the group had taken individual lead spots. "Til You Come Back To Me" I loved that one alot. Joe Evans ( Carnival Label ) had some of the other artists on the label cover the same song as did many producers from other labels did the same thing. Smitty's voice was more soulful to me, more yearning & pleaful, you could feel the ache in his heart... tho'no more than at a live show, he & the audience really connected.
By Soulpuss (24.102.217.36) on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 11:58 pm: |
Hey RD: The writer are P.Simmons and I. Washington.
Produced and arranged by Ransom, Price & Daugherty. There is mention of this and the flip "I will always love you" being from Lp 'the New Cymbals" Dep-2013. The latter is written by Dan Brantley.
Rd: I will have to audition this later today, as my stereo system is disconnected presently.
By RD (63.188.32.129) on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 12:19 am: |
Wow, it should be R. Simmons and J. Washington. Clever. Simmons and Washington were members of the Sensations. Originally four members they pared down to three. I don't know who Ranson, Price and Daughterty are but the original was produced by Lester Johnson and Bill Branch. The publishing company should be Outwaithe Music, named after the Outwaithe Homes Projects where Lester Johnson and possibly Branch were raised. Might be a new recording of the song though, as I never heard it or new of its existence until you posted.

By RD (67.25.177.168) on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 09:53 am: |
Soul Sister tell Blue of Ron McCoy's passing he probably doesn't know. McCoy lived in Jamaica Queens, moving there from the Bronx some years ago. He was a big fan of Smitty's, the Lovettes (the group Blue discovered) and Phil Terrell, who he said was a much better singer live then his recordings indicated. I read somewhere that Terrell is kin to Blue and went on to a career in education in the State of New Jersey.

RD; Yes, Phil Terrell Flood (his real name) was not only a good singer but he's a beautiful human being too !! He & I were tight tight like Brother & Sister, we almost did a book project together before I left J.C.N.J. to move to Cleveland with Jimmy Scott. Phil is indeed Blue's cousin, he became a teacher, principal,& is on the board of education, his beautiful wife Willie was a teacher also and prominant in the church & politics, she's held several posts & ran for mayor of J.C. They have one son together Philip, Jr. Phil was the shoulder I cried on when Smitty passed. There are a few of his tracks on the CD's on Carnival artists.
By Soulpuss (24.102.217.36) on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 11:20 pm: |
Hey RD: The New Cymbals version is different from the Sensations'. It has a horn intro with a short rap. This later version is more on the sweet side. Publisher is Delightful Music/ Outwaite Music. This side is the B-side.
I had completely forgotten about this single being in my possession. My recall has deteriorated over the last few years. A sign of being old.
I also note that the Sensations version was arranged by Willie Smith. Another coincidence the times are identical for both versions,2.26.
By RD (63.188.32.37) on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 11:58 pm: |
I have all those Carnival compilations, Soul Sister, the ones released on Collectables and some better ones issued by a UK company. Ron McCoy wrote a song called "That's What Love Will Do," for his group that never came out while they were with Carnival and he forgot about it. When I sent him a Carnival compilation with a female group called the Symphonics singing it, it blew his mind. He never knew that Joe recorded it on them or anybody.
SoulPuss: I believe the New Cymbals spun off from Lee Williams & the Cymbals. "Please Baby Please" by the Sensations and the Springers' "I Know Why" were Way Out Records most popular releases by far.

SoulSister,
a few more.
The Topics
'Have your fun/a man aint supposed to cry'on the Dream Label(no.204)worth a cool 1,000 pounds or more,a mega rare soul sound.
Another rarity worth around the 300 pounds mark, and I think it was mentioned above,is 'Hey Girl(Where are you Going)/if love comes knocking' on Chadwick Records(no.102)and a fairly cheaper sound, but still a great sound is the brilliant Carnival Records(no.520)of 'She's so Fine/I dont have to cry'.
Heres a few Forgotten sounds by
Tommy Hunt
nothing expensive but all good oldies. And its whats in the groove that counts, not the price.
Tommy Hunt.
I dont want to lose you/hold on-Atlantic(no.2278).
I just dont know what to do with myself/and I never knew-Scepter(no.1236).
I need a woman of my own/Searchin'for my baby-Dynamo(no.113).

The Biggest Man/Never Love a Robin(brilliant)Dynamo(no.101)also done by Barbara and Brenda on Dynamo(no.108)and equally as good.
The parade of broken hearts/Human-Scepter(no.1219).
Words can never tell it/How can I be anything-Dynamo(no.105).
You made a man out of me/Its all a bad dream-Scepter(no.1275).
Also some great sounds by

Mel&thensome; Thanks again for sharing. I think I have most of what Tommy Hunt did on CD and 331/3. On Manhattans I know I should have everything on CD, 331/3, and some 45s. I don't have all the 45s and original stuff I used to, unfortanetly a vast amount of my original stuff got stolen out of Smitty's mother's house back in 1974, the year I moved out and left them in someone's temporary care, this collection was big early 50s to early 70s 45s & 331/3s all the best & obscure R&B and Soul, afew jazz peices tourch singers. Where are those records you mentioned were reasonable(?) The one you mentioned by Manhattans on Avanti ??? Is one I never knew about. You are one cat who's really done his homework.
