R&B:
Barbara Acklin died in November 1998.

Eugene Record selects his appearances with the Chi-lites because of his commitment to Gospel music.

Marvin Smith of the Artistics performs as a solo artist - he did reunite with the Artistics for a classic soul concert in 1995.

Hey Kevin, wasn't Eugene Record with the Chi-lites on the PBS special before this last one. I remember seeing them recently in red pin-stripe suits.

Frank Reed is the singer the Chi-lites use for their live appearances & he does resemble Eugene Record in the looks department. He may have been with them on the next to last PBS special.

I was talking to Nathaniel Mayer. And he told me he was going to be on the next PBS special they will be taping on May 18 in Pittsburg.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Common (209.2.55.171) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 12:54 pm:

Hello everyone,

Got my wish list handy. Here it goes:

George McCrae(found out he wasn't dead after all!)
The Dells
Kim Weston
Jimmy Ruffin
Sly & The Family Stone(I know this is wishful thinking but it doesn't hurt to dream!)
Etta James(I know she's blues but I would love to hear her sing "At Last" live & "All I Could Do Was Cry")
The Flirtations(I've heard one song of theirs, "Nothing But A Heartache" & I would love to hear this live as well!)

Peace!

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.13.31) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 01:14 pm:

Weren't The Dells on a couple of specials ago? Did a brilliant version of "Oh What A Night".

It appears to me that the PBS specials are advancing forward in time, from '50's do-wop to early/mid '60's soul and rock. Does this mean it's "Louie Louie Time", or are Paul Revere and the Raiders booked?

Top of pageBottom of page   By LTLFTC (12.210.76.205) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 01:23 pm:

If we're talking mid 60's soul and rock wouldn't it be a trip to see the Parliaments doing just their Revilot/Golden World stuff? George and them coming out in snazzy looking suits....Also, whatever Orlons are left would be great. The Stairsteps, Evie Sands ,Jelly Beans...
What's the crieteria as far as substitutions ? It seems like, say, a five person group should have at least two original memebers or something.
It was disorienting seeing Peaches & Herb on the last special - I have housecats older than Peaches.

Common:Its ok to wish (you and a million others, plus myself)!! I truly wish Sly would make an appearance..a lot of prodution concepts were revolutionized once Mr. Stewart (and Mr. Brown of course) hit the scene..He raised the stakes. I still love him and "The Family"..I am sure it will happen "In Time"...The only thing I have is the Sinbad special with "The Family" but no Sly...Larry had to do all of Sly's parts and then there's the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame but they didnt perform!! That woudlve been a treat. I understand that Mr. Stewart is very shy; even in the early days (you can kinda tell in the old interviews w/ Dick Cavett). Keep your fingers crossed Common..

I am totally loving everyone's choices..really good picks..I am going to add on with:

The Impressions (with Ralph Johnson)
Joe Bataan
Charles Wright (and any remaining members from Watts 105st Band, calling on you Mr. James Gadson)
The Meters
Brenton Wood
Al Wilson
Gladys Knight AND The Pips
James Brown and Bobby Byrd with the Original members of The JB's (calling on you Bootsy,Maceo,Jabbo and Fred!!)
Jean Carne
Teddy Pendergrass w/ the remaining Blue Notes
Blue Magic (w/Ted Mills)

The Honeycone reunited and singing Want Ads etc.
Maxine Brown (she was recently in the audience at Mary Wilson's show at BB King's and the crowd gave her a warm round of applause).
Fontella Bass
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas
Jr. Walker and the All Stars
Brenda Holloway
Glass House (with Scherrie Payne included)
Lenny Welch
Johnny Mathis
Len Barry
Jean Terrell, Cindy Birdsong, Mary Wilson (doing 70's Supremes hits)
Rare Earth
Ashford & Simpson (doing their own hits)
Jones Girls
Betty Wright

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sly fan (67.115.74.237) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 02:06 pm:

Johnnie Otis w/son Shuggie
Peaches and Herb (minus the Disco but I know they are gonna get requests to do it, w/ the original Peaches)
Syl Johnsnon
Luther Ingram
Ernie Hines
The Emotions
Leroy Hutson

Douglasm: Maceo Parker or Clarence Clemmons would be perfect to do Jr. Walker's songs..

Top of pageBottom of page   By Michael/cleoharvey (160.79.83.208) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 02:13 pm:

I apologize for my ignorance I did not know that Jr. Walker had died and now my day is much sadder. I did know that one of the Jones Girls had died but thought that would be easier to replace if they made an appearance. On this year's special there seemed to be only One Degree of the original Three Degrees.

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.13.31) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 02:44 pm:

I believe Dennis Coffey said the qualification for a group is to have one original member left. Name ownership becomes a problem here, because The Three Degrees (?) were billed as "The Girls". I think I have the right group here.

Mel:
Here's what I know about the following:

The Adams Apples were a studio creation of producer/songwriter Paul Leka. Not too long after this release he produced the Peppermint Rainbow's "Will You Be Staying After Sunday"

Admirations were discovered & produced by Morty Craft - I'll have to ask him what happened to them.

Artistics - Marvin Smith has been touring here and overseas. He did reunite with some of the Artistics back in 1995 for a Chicago Soul gig. He would love to visit England.

Billy Butler - saw him in 1995 when he came to NYC on business; friendly man, tours on occasion with Jerry as his guitarist

The Cooperettes came out of Washington, DC. Whereabouts unknown

Young Holt Trio(unlimited) - Still tour here and abroad.

Hope this helps!

KevGo: Thats great that Young Holt still play and they travel!! Do they occassionaly play with Ramsey Lewis?? I love those guys!! I am happy to hear they are doing well..."Soulful Strut" inspired me to take piano lessons,LOL..

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Tuesday, April 08, 2003 - 07:27 pm:

Sly:
Eldee Young (bass) & Isaac "Red" Holt (drums) do tour on occasion but most of their gigs are overseas (UK, Japan). They rarely play with Ramsey.

I'm glad that "Soulful Strut" inspired you to play piano but the real person who deserves credit is the late Johnny Griffith, legendary Funk Brother pianist/organist who played on many Brunswick sessions in Chicago "on the down low." Also, Young/Holt never played on "Soulful Strut" - that was originally an instrumental track for Barbara Acklin's "Am I The Same Girl" recorded by Johnny with Chicago session musicians. The reason why Young/Holt Unlimited's name went on the record was because it was easier to market the disc under an already-established name.
