Thanks Ritchie. Whenever I return to explore this Site, it's like reading something new.
When I first met David Meikle, and Graham Finch, it was on your Soulsville. When they visited Detroit in 2001, I joined them at Bomac's, along with Francis Nero, and a few more friends where Rudy Robinson was playing.
As David began pulling out his maps, and pictures, I instantly began travelling back in time. The pictures of the scenes and the artist he had just blew me away. Especially when they presented information on the obsured groups of the 60's. Artist of whom I didn't think would ever surface again. Some of them I knew personally, but had no idea their recordings had reached across the sea or that others knew them. Just as Lowell expressed, David of Glasgo knew more than I about the Detroit music scene.
When two of the Distance saw the picture of the apartment of Johnnie Mae Matthews, the window through which she heard them singing outside, they became very excited. "Look, remember when we were passing here singing, this is the window where Johnny Mae was looking, and she stopped us."
Nuff said.

Check out Lowell's art.
Truly a unique eye. You know I love (but can't afford) your work Lowell.

Hi Sis
Thanks so much for reminding me of our fantastic evening at Bomacs in September 2001.
I'm going to post some images which you have not seen before.
This first one is of Maxine Waters performing live that evening. The late great Rudy Robinson is on keyboards.
Folks there wasn't even a cover charge on this show.
By David Meikle (81.103.135.156) on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 03:43 pm: |
As if that wasn't enough, Frances Nero hit the stage too.
By David Meikle (81.103.135.156) on Monday, March 17, 2003 - 03:49 pm: |
A James Brown soundalike/lookalike tore the roof off with a fantastic performance. Shamefully I can't remember his name but I told him later how much I enjoyed his act.

However the star of the evening for me was Rick Gould.
Rick's card says he is "Have Drummer & Singer Will Travel".
He performed an incredible version of "Turn back the hands of time" then disappeared into the night.
Awesome.
BTW a pic of bari sax player Vicki Alexander hangs behind Rick's mic.

And finally, the company was great too....
from left to right Frances Nero, David Meikle, James "Pete" Crawford(of the Distants and the Magnetics), Graham (acooolcat) Finch, Arthur Walton of the Distants, Melba and her Sister - SisDetroit.
Check out Otis William's book and the pic of the El Domingos. Pete and Arthur are second and third from the left. They haven't changed a bit! Pete also sang on the Magnetics classic "Lady in green".

David ;
Wow !! Great pictures ! Hey, Rudy's socks aren't blue enough are they? Do you happen to know the sax player's name in the "James Brown" picture? He looks like a guy named George I used to play with occasionally in Lansing.

Thanks Steve.
Unfortunately I don't know the sax player.
Rudy was the life and soul of the party. He was also a nice guy and may have taken the photo at the bottom of this list.

Great Pix DMeikle. We had a wonderful time. Gee, SisDetroit looks kinda plump there. :o)
People are asking about the affair. What shall I tell them. When, Where, What time, etc.

That was the last time I saw Rudy. He passed away in February 2002. He is featured in the SITSOM film with the black top hat, playing the keyboards on various tunes.

Sis,
You're a natural knock-out....

David!
Two of the best James Brown soundalikes that recorded and that I know of are Little Royal and Lee Fields, but I guess this guy isn't one of them ? Fine pictures!

Thank you Ralph. I've been walking today. I'm trying to get rid of this winter excess. :o) I think I'll start practing my dancing to get ready for May.
DMeikle - I'm hoping that all will be well in that you will be able to come over to the States. Things are up in the air and unsure of whether travel will be safe. I can't believe we were at Bomac's the week of nine eleven. I'm just praying for peace!!

As long as the planes are flying, I'll be there!
I'm glad that is all I have to worry about.
Let's hope for those closely involved that this is a short war and that they come home safe and well.

Thanks for posting the wonderful pictures... memories. I was recently listening to the recording of the interview I did with Pete that night - I could hardly hear him for the band. LOL.

Tonya - Welcome to Soulful Detroit! Thanks for your post under "Maxine Waters."
Please come back often, as there are lots of questions we would like to ask. My first question, when and where will you be performing next?
By Tonya (205.186.34.182) on Sunday, April 06, 2003 - 08:53 pm: |
Thanks SisDetroit for turning me on to this great site. I'll call you and let you know my itinerary for the coming months. I'm looking forward to getting together with you, David and crew in May here in Detroit. I'll try to bring Rudy's son with me. Once again the vocalist in the picture with Rudy Robinson is Detroit's own Maxine Woods not Maxine Waters. Wishing you all a great and musical day!

Gee Whiz - KevGo, thank you. I have gained a few pounds since 2001. Perhaps, if it would stop snowing, I could start walking around the block to lose some of this by May 23. :o)
