Does anyone know if other Record Companies besides Motown recorded girl groups in Detroit?

Lupine released tracks by the Primettes (early Supremes) and Ruby Yates (her tune "It's Been a Long Time" was recut and released on Hit Productions).

Also, Solid Hit had the Debutantes and Pat Lewis on their roster.

Best,

Mark

TWRIL-BIG TOP lables with H.B. and I.M.
recorded THE YOUNG SISTERS.They did a lot of back-up vocals for so many DETROIT artists, and hardly got the publicity and credits they so rightfully deserve.3hree very pretty girls.
I was in love with all of them, especialy,PATTY YOUNG.The only girl in the group with the last name of YOUNG.

The Young Sisters backed up Del Shannon on a number of his hits, including "Little Town Flirt" and its great flip "The Wamboo".

Golden World and solid hit recorded The Debonnaires

Topper recorded Dottie and Millie

Ruby recorded the Wonderettes

also Gi Gi and the Charmaines were recorded by Columbia, not a Detroit label but it's highly likely they were Detroit recordings.

I have a question. Some of the groups that Mel named above what were the average sales for their records in the neighborhood of 20,000 or 10,000 or does anyone know?

I think you'll find that your low figure is quite high for the recordings that Mel posted Stephanie.

The owner of King Records (Syd Nathan) once said he would press up 50 copies of a record by a new or non hit artist and shop them to DJs in a 150 miles radius. If it stiffed and didn't generate any interest he didn't press anymore.

King could do this because they were a complete record company under one roof. They recorded, pressed copies, made the LP covers, etc.

Hi Mel
I believe the Imaginations on Magic City and Blue Rock included a guy or two. It was a different group to the "Imaginary Three" that backed Cynthia on her later Big Hit 45.

Marc or anyone. You mention the Dream Girls on Metro. Were these the same group who were on Twirl? Also was there a Detroit based Metro label please? I only have details of the New York one, owned by Leonard Feathers & Leroy Holmes with the Dream Girls - #20034 - `Heartaches` / `Love Him`. Keith.

One of the toughest Detroit records, The Camaros on Dar-Cha is a girl group. And I think many of Bobby Smith's records (on Big Top and American Arts were recorded in Detroit, though I don't know about the one on Bell.

Keith,

Metro was a division of MGM - there's also
a Royal Jokers single on the label.

I don't know for definite but it's very likely the
group on Metro is the same as on Big Top as
both the Dream Girls and the Royal Jokers were
produced (and probably managed) by Harry Balk.
