Prince - The Rainbow Children.

A complete load of crap!

I know when Prince has turned into a JW and starts singing about Paradise and Armageddon and whatever else he is babbling about it is time throw in the towel.

Hi Fayette!!

Ashanti is a pretty girl and all but she cant sing on the level at which her promotions team has created. You can hear pitchshifting and correcting done all over her cd. And her live performances have proved this time and again.

I did like her on the Buffy the Vampire ep. though. Maybe acting would be better for her :)

i only saw ashanti on a video,i have heard quite
a few people say the same thing about her not
being to hold a tune i was just wondering about
that.i saw kelly rowlands on a last night
talk show and was surprise, because she didn't
sound like the same person on the nelly cd

Top of pageBottom of page   By fayette (64.12.97.7) on Tuesday, March 04, 2003 - 10:39 am:

p.s mr eli,

i agree about what you said about musiq.he won
quite a few awards on the soul train music
awards. why he did puzzles me.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Livonia Ken (136.2.1.101) on Tuesday, March 04, 2003 - 10:57 am:

I think Musiq has potential. My biggest knock on him is common to a lot of current acts, which is that he seems to fill 80 minute CDs with 20 minutes of solid material. This time deficit is a result of both tracks that are just not up to snuff and a tendency to let the better tracks meander.

Also like most acts, he will probably never live up to his record company's hype (e.g. I'm not counting on him to "save" soul music), but that's not really his fault.

Ken

You have to thank the Antares Corp. and some other manufactures who make "Auto Tune" devices as software for Pro Tools and as stand alone units.
I have one but it does not work on people who sing dreadfully out of tune as does Ashanti and Amerie who sang a half tone out of pitch on the Soul Train Awards show the other night. Just dreadful..I repeat..dreadful, and the people who buy this stuff must not have relative pitch and are tone deaf.

I saw Musiq at the Sitsom premiere at the Apollo..dreadfully out of tune.
Nuff said.

Considering that most singles being released for popular consumption these days seem to be auto-tuned composites of a couple of dozen takes (or more), it's hard to figure out who really can sing anymore.

Ken

Hi Bobby Eli!!

We are in complete agreement on the pitch issue. It is funny to watch some of these singers just BOMB on television regularly!! I am sure that "regular" folks who arent in the music industry are puzzled as to why a singer doesnt sound like the record when they sing live.

It is the state of music today. They look at the face and body ala Simon on "American Idol" and they cant sing or play an instrument. Dut that doesnt matter nowadays!!

I have been using Pitch 'N'Time for 6 months now for instruments but other engineers use this and other products on vocals which is a nono for me. They also multitrack and stack vocals and have singers sing phrases which are sampled to back up the live performance. It is really sad, but this is what the people paying the bills want.

Anyway, I am glad that we agree on the sad vocal performances of these "artists"!

mr eli i saw the soul train award also and i think
amerie got more applause from dressing too
revealing than her singing. i maybe the only
one that thinks this but i my opinion, they dress
too revealing to make up for the fact that they
can't sing. toni braxton can sing, but jlo
whines
her way through a song.maybe they need to focus
more on a playboy spread and leaving the singing
business to somebody like india arie, who sung
without the FREDRICKS OF HOLLYWOOD lol.

Stu & Crazy Glue

I get the feeling that a few months ago, Stu was reading the back of the packaging and said to himself, "Wow! It can also be used as some kind of adhesive" :)

For the record, though, I agree with Stu on Larry Graham. Funky or mellow, I don't mind his voice at all. And besides, Larry sings on a lot of those Sly & the Family Stone tracks I would not want to be without.

Ken

There's something to be said for singers and musicians that work a bar gig night after night before they are discovered,it weeds out the truly pitiful singers as not to many club owners are going to keep bad entertainment(unless they're drawing huge crowds which seems unlikly),plus you get to know what kind of songs you can sing and what kind to stay away from,range-wise.
Some of the singers remind me of Micky Rooney in Andy Hardy movies, when he says "hey gang lets put on a concert)it doesn,t matter if you can sing good, all you need is the nerve to sing in front of people.

FWIW... Musiq is a soulful young guy whose heart & mind is in the right place, who is an artist still evolving, despite having two platinum albums right quick. Give him some room to breathe. And, FYI, he is a fan of and friend to the Funk Brothers. You can still think he's 'soft' (tho' maybe you've only heard his singles - get someone to play you the rest of his album). Just passing along the info.

You're right HW, I have only heard his singles. I have his cd's but I haven't played them yet. Will peep him out asap.
