Anyone have any info/history on this studio? G M Recording Studios, 14611 Nine Mile Rd., East Detroit. The studio was owned by Guido Marasco; studio manager, John Marasco; chief engineer, Jim Myland.
This is cir.1971, but my recollections were: Studio 2- Audio Designs console(16in-11out); monitors, Altec; amps, McIintosh.
The Marasco's had their own record label? which was sometimes used for recordings made at GM?
Any info on this studio appreciated.

That was the first studio that I ever saw the inside of, in about 1973. It was 16 track at that time. The place was above a body shop. Milan Bogdan was the engineer on our session. They had gold records on the wall for "Scorpio" and "It's So Nice to Be With You". That's all I remember..

Hello everyone. The studio where we recorded Scorpio is now called Super Disc. They also use that room for classes for The Recording Institute of Detroit which is also part of the studio. I attended some recording engineering classes with my son James in that room a few years ago. He was surprized when I told him Scorpio was recorded in that very room.

They had record labels called "GM" and "Bumpshop" - which was obviously named after the car repair business. I think another label of theirs was called "Love" and the only release I know of is by The Final Decisions.
I'm sure that the Diane Lewis "Love" label 45 is a different Detroit label.

I hired Bob Dennis, who is at the top of the heap over there in EastPoint. He worked at Motown from about 1963 until he went to HDH in about 1968.

Bob Dennis was my favorite worker. He gave me more results, with less backtalk, then any other person that ever worked for me.

No wonder that he left me.

GM, now known as The Disc, Ltd. is still an active recording studio. It's located around the corner from Melodies and Memories, which happens to stock quite a bit of rare Motown and Detroit-related music, not to mention the clock from the Golden World studios on W. Davison.

Creative Source's 1st LP was cut there. It included the original version of "You Can't Hide Love", produced by Michael Stokes and arranged by Paul Riser.

Does anyone know how I can get in touch with Michael Stokes? I'd like to ask him about his late brother's recording business.
TIA, Graham

i recorded a record at GM in 1972 called the rouge plant blues that became a local cult hit. it was originally put out on guidos house label called bump shop records. he later sold the tune to capitol. i recorded there for a year with milan, frank fisher, and another engineer that a i can't remember the name of. he plays sax and still performs in the city. the album we were working on never got finshed before they sold the place. a couple of the songs were produced by bob babbett and andrew smith. bobby lewis

Welcome Bobby,

I want to know more about the Headliners. Did Motown found you or did you found Motown? Mickey Stevenson produced the first single on V.I.P. What was it like? Did you record more songs than the two 45s on Motown?

Lars - Do you have a copy of the label for the original release, by PopCorn Wylie, of "The Mighty Lover" recorded and released under the name "The Mighty Lovers?"

ME,

If you mean the Mighty Lovers release on Soulhawk 1007 I have got it. But if you mean the song "Mighty Lover" by The Mighty Lovers or Ideals as they also were called, I dont have it on a 45... That single was released on Pameline and Boo-Ga-Loo.

BL468A/B - Mighty Lover b/w Soul Blues (instr.)Tune written and produced by Jerryo. Disc was released two times on the Boo-Ga-Loo label as by the Ideals and then as the Mighty Lovers.

The Ideals (members Reggie Jackson, Leonard Mitchell, Robert Tharp, Sam Stewart and Major Lance)

I didn't know Major Lance was with the Ideals.

I think I have that compiliation. I just want to see the label of "The Mighty Lover" 45 which has the group "The Mighty Lover" on it. I've seen the one with "The Ideals."

(Popcorn said he may have a copy. So, I'll work on that later.)

Sis, Major Lance was only with the Ideals for their first couple of 45s, circa '61 or so. The records are on Paso, and they are good, but Major was well into his great solo career by the time the Ideals became well known.

Major Lance sang with the Ideals at one time but I doubt if he ever recorded with them. The Paso Ideals' were Leonard Mitchell, Reggie Jackson, Robert Tharpe and Sam Stewart. Lance may have been a fill-in or a member who stayed around for a brief period. Lance first solo recording was in 1960 I Got a Girl/Phyliss on Mercury Records, which preceded the Ideals' first recording on Paso, released in 11/1961. Lance's first Okeh recording "Deliah" came out April 1962.

hi L.G. bobby lewis here. i was shocked when i saw the two records you conjured up. first about the headliners. we were a club band touring around the country. together from 1960 til l969. in 1964, we were playing a club in melvindale mich. called the suburban lounge. one night in comes berry gordy and diana ross. he had heard good things about us and decided to check us out. he liked us and signed us to a contract on vip. i still have my original contract. mickey stevenson was our mentor thru all of that. he helped us pick out the songs and oversaw the sessions. we played the fox theatre christmas show with all the motown acts in 1965. i recently received a photo someone had taken of the marquis at the fox with all the artists names on it. that was a treasure find for me. interesting you should have a copy of the bump shop recording of the rouge plant blues. there were only a few printed up. it was sold to capitol records shortly thereafter. i'll check back in a couple of weeks. any questions, i'll be glad to answer them. bobby

Great Pix L.G. Just a couple of bits of info. Robert Tharp mentioned earlier as one of the Ideals was also known as Tommy Darke and was Tom in Tom & Jerrio, who sang on top of a Motown backing track, issued on Jerry-O, around the time when Popcorn was working with Jerry Murray. Also re the GM postings at the beginning of this thread, I have a few details of a GM related label called LUV, with a release by Joshua. If anyone wants disc info, I can dig it out sometime. Keith

I know of this Love label... I was lucky enough to interview one of The Final Decisions last year. And also Dee Edwards and her ex-husband Floyd Jones too. All wonderful people.

Graham,

Dee Edwards recorded a lot of songs for many labels, but on The Final Decisions I thought I only had the above Love single. I found two more.

Interesting to see J.J. Barnes name here. I also found this more up-tempo track on the Hi C label. Dont know if it has any connection to the GM studios.
