Besides "Barefootin'", I never heard the other Robert Parker recordings. Its always a mystery why an artist will have a huge smash and then barely get airplay for the follow-up. I did enjoy the Marvelettes(with Gladys in the lead) version on their "pink" LP.

I don't know the date, but "Barefootin'" was recorded at Nola Recording Studios in NYC. Nola was mostly used as a demo/rehearsal studio, but every once in a while, a moment like this would happen.

dvdmike, I did'nt know Barefootin' was recorded in New York. Thanks for that. I allways thought Robert Parker sounded New Orleans. A bit like Lee Dorsey or Warren Lee. Maybe I was wrong. SDUK.

Soulie Dave UK, I'm with you man, I always thought that was a New Orleans recording and I thought at the time it was introduced as such.It sure sounds it.We learn alot here.

Hey Gang:
I work for the label that owns the NOLA Records catalog - the Tuff City Music Group. We released a Robert Parker anthology called "The Wardell Quezerque Sessions" and work very closely with NOLA's former president Clinton Scott.

First of all, NOLA stands for New Orleans, Louisiana - owned by Clinton Scott, Wardell Quezerque & Ulis Gaines. They founded the label in 1964.

All their recordings were made in New Orleans - no other city.

Robert Parker was born october 14, 1930 in New Orleans.

According to Clinton Scott (who I just spoke to on the phone), there was no NOLA studio in NYC. They had a small demo studio in their New Orleans office.

Robert Parker's "Barefootin'" was recorded at Cosimo's Studios in New Orleans, owned by Cosimo Matassa in 1966 - this information from Clinton Scott, who was there at the session with arranger Wardell Quezerque. Matassa distributed NOLA through his Dover Record Distribution Co.

By the way, Detroit's own Rationals did a FANTASTIC cover of "Barefootin'" back in the day. You can download an MP3 of it from the official Rationals Web site...

Sorry, my mistake. Thanks for clearing that up. But there was a Nola Penthouse Studio in NYC. They did a lot of jazz recordings there.

Last I heard of Robert was a UK released 45 in the mid 70's on ISLAND (same label as Fantastic Johnny C's "Don't Depend on Me" & a Swamp Dogg single from the same period -- label design featured palm trees, etc.)

Around 1973 I moved to Kent, UK and used to go to a great little record stall on Gravesend market run by Terry Waghorn, lots of US imports, a lot being from Chicago. Terry also ran a fanzine called Rockpile. Anyhow, 10 years later I moved to Gravesend and lo and behold, next door to Terry. He told me that back in the early 70s he had the brief rights to the Nola catalogue and wanted to bring Robert Parker over to the UK but couldn't get the funds. Keith.

Robert Parker later recorded for SSS International. I have a single of his for that label, "You See Me"/"You Shakin' Things Up".

Best,

Mark
