I would like to go to this event--I could hop a Greyhound bus up there. Anyone know how far the Greyhound Station is from the Cass? Is the Cass in a bad area of Detroit? I'm assuming it's not, since you've already held an event there.

Best,

It would be great to see you there Mark.

If I recall, some parts of Cass are debateable in the evening. I'll let the locals tell you about it however.

The Greyhound Terminal is at 1001 Howard. This is 2 miles from the venue and on the west end side of downtown at John Lodge freeway.

If you came early enough we could meet you and take you there. Else, there is bound to be a taxi rank there...well maybe.

During daylight hours we have no problems anywhere in Detroit.

Sorry you can't make it Mel, hope you can Mark.

Although there hasn't been much comment so far this should be a sell-out. I get lots of mail from the Motor City.

Mark - Greyhound bus station is kitty corner to the MGM Grand Detroit Casino. Howard Street and John C. Lodge Fwy. Downtown Detroit, two blocks from the federal bldg. where the CIA and FBI have offices, one block from the IRS, where they hoard your money. Two blocks from ATF, which you should avoic. About 4 blocks from the Detroit News where you can find Susan Whitall getting ready for her next feature.

Welcome to Detroit. :o)

Mark,
Sis and I will be your bodyguards, if you have fear.

The Greyhound station is quite a ways from the Cass Cafe, it's right at the Howard Street exit of the southbound Lodge Freeway. You'd have to hop a cab.

Lots of us go to the Cass or environs all the time at night, it's right in the center of Wayne State University so there's traffic and people around on the street til pretty late. There are several popular bars and restaurants along Cass, plus a big dorm or two and WDET-FM so -- no worries.

Nancy,
I recommend the Inn on Ferry Street to friends, it's a bed and breakfast located right in the city of Detroit. Ferry is a street of huge Victorian homes, four or five of them make up the complex ...you can get a room for about $99.

Google it, they have their own website.

Ferry is about a block north of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the "museum district" ...

Eminem's film crew stayed there during the making of 8 Mile.

Hey Folks:
When I was in Detroit this past September, I stayed at the Corktown Inn on Trumball Street up from the main post office. The rooms were quite cheap ($55 dollars a night) and very clean. It's not far from the Greyhound bus station and the local bus line runs along Trumball. Here are the particulars:

I'm the one always touting Detroit as safe, and it is but I'd recommend other places than the Corktown for women, especially. It's better to err a little on the side of safety and paying al ittle more. If you want more details, email me.

Maybe you guys could get a group rate somewhere, the Inn on Ferry Street, or the Pontchartrain, which has been renovated and is worthwhile again.

Another Forumer points out that however cheap a place is, you'll make up for it in cabfare, so it might be a better deal to rent a car while here.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 02:00 pm:

Oops I spoke too soon on the Pontch, a business traveler friend tells me he's not sure it's been renovated yet.

The Marriott downtown is good, the Courtyard by Marriott, the Athenaeum in Greektown and the Inn on Ferry Street, can recommend those absolutely.

Great...I freak out many posts ago about going out at night in Detroit and you tell me it's no big deal. Yet when I recommend a hotel in Downtown Detroit which is nice, clean & decent, you shoot it down because you feel that area is unsafe for women at night! Since I will be staying there more likely when I come to town for this event if any female visitor feels the need to have company escort them, I'd be more than happy to.

Bear in mind that some of us are on budgets and can only afford to spend so much money (I work for TWO independent labels and still have my retail work to fall back on yet I'm still scrounging), which is why I recommended the Corktown. The area is not that bad and like I said I'd be more than happy to play lookout for anyone from our Soulful Detroit family who chooses to stay there.

While the Corktown incident was indeed unfortunate, I do stand beside my comment about finding a place for those of us who want to be a part of this event yet our budgets are limited - through no fault of our own. The Athenaeum in Greektown is way too high. But it is beautiful. Of course it is across the street from the Greektown Casino, restaurants galore, and plenty security, being down the street from Police Headquarters.

Hotels have changed hands so much downdown. The Omni, I think, is in the GM/Rennissance Center. Am I correct, Sue? I think the Marriott is across the street. Both are near the Tunnel.

Actually, we don't know what DMeikle has on the agenda. Once we know what and where events are going to be held, then you can decide which is the best route for convenience and for the budget.

KevGo - No matter where you are, what city, west coast, east coast, south or north, any hotel, anybody's house, restuarant, over to your girlfriends house, at church, anything can happen. Stay where you feel comfortable.

Detroit is judged by all of the surrounding suburbs, so don't just think Detroit when you hear about the statistics. Detroit may be predomantly black, but the suburbs are predomantly white. Crime is neither black nor white.

Anyway, you have the moffia down the street from where you're gonna stay. And there are no blacks in the moffia. (LOL) "just jokin" and looking foward to seeing you here in the big city.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 03:06 pm:

Sis, the old Omni is now the Doubletree, and it's on Jefferson and yes, recommended.

The hotel in the GM/Renaissance Center is the Marriott now, and it's a Courtyard by Marriott directly across the street.

Yes the Athenaeum can be expensive. But Detroit not being a tourist mecca, you CAN get hotel and rental car deals at the big hotels on the weekends; check it out for the Marriott, the Doubletree, etc. If you stay at a cheap place but end up spending a mint on cabs, it's not cost-effective.

Yes I am DMeikle. I came here when I was five years old by way of the train. As we were pulling up at the old train station and looking at the big tall building with lots of windows, my mother said "We're in Detroit."

So I believe it's on Lowell's ruins of Detroit site that I got a memorable look at the inside of the old train station.

Off the subject: (I Came from Elizabeth City, NC where Alex Haley was raised by his step mother, he went to school with my mother and my uncles. His father worked at Elizabeth City State College. You can see the city I was born in the movie "Roots - Next Generation")

Thank you for the kind words. As a former radio news producer, I would often remind my reporters (are you reading this, Sue?) that crime is crime no matter who is committing it and it can happen anywhere. I will look into other hotels that may offer the same price structure as the Corktown as well as car rentals.

Sue:
Granted, Detroit may be turning into a tourist city (as is my hometown of Rochester) but like many cities it offers services that are affordable to us "poor types". I don't want to beat the dead horse any further but we can't be afford to be blinded by "the bigger-nicer-shinier-pricier the better" rule when this country's economy is forcing everyone to watch their budgets (in fact, isn't it more expensive to stay at a hotel over the weekend that a weekday?).

Scratcher:
Gotcha on the laptop-watch. I'm leaving mine at home! :)

Top of pageBottom of page   By SteveS (209.219.207.3) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 04:01 pm:

Kevin,

I don't think Sue is pushing crass consumerism - she's just trying to tell you that the hotels in the Detroit area are quite underbooked on most weekends, as business travelers, who pay premium rates, occupy rooms Mon - Thurs. As a result, many hotels (except possibly those in close proximity to the casinos) offer "weekend getaway packages" to try and fill a few empty rooms. I see these advertised for as low as $79, and I suspect that some internet sleuthing would yield some great deals. Also, Detroit is not a great city for getting around by cab (generally, you can't hail one, you have to call for one and then wait), and even getting transportation from the airport to a hotel can get pretty expensive, so a rental car might prove cheaper.

Northwest Airlines sometimes offers weekend packages that include hotel and car (same deal - no business travelers on weekends) and Detroit is their major hub. It might be worth checking out.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 04:17 pm:

Steve:
I've been to Detroit on business as recent as last September as part of a three week trip travelling between St. Louis, Detroit and Chicago. I'm quite aware of the transportation issues yet got around just fine via public transportation and rental car. Yet I was lucky - my company paid for the trip. This time it's out of my own pocket.

I appreciate the information you passed along, which was the purpose of my posting to begin with.

See you in May,
Kevin Goins - KevGo

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (63.85.105.20) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 04:18 pm:

Kevgo,
Congratulations on totally misunderstanding my post. I said Detroit is NOT yet a tourist city -- no matter how much we deserve to be -- therefore you can get deals here on the weekends.

Using Sis's words about color to somehow bludgeon me is totally offensive and has bewildered her as well as me. Sis brought up color, I did not.

And David, it'll be nice to see you, too.

Top of pageBottom of page   By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 04:32 pm:

KevGo - Trying to keep things light here, I'm sure Sue's comment about the Trumbull Fort Street area, was in no way to offend you. She was thinking only of the females who are often preyed upon when they seem to be alone. Nancy, coming from Toronto, we really want to be sure all issues are covered. We all know that Venus and Mars are different, and the world sometimes gets in the way.

So, let's compromise and look forward to having a Soulful Detroit good time with brown eyed, blue eyed, green eyed, grey eyed, and yes, red eyed, soul brothers and sisters from all over the world.

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 04:34 pm:

Sue:
First of all, I apologize for not reading clearly your post regarding Detroit not yet being a tourist city. At the same time, the question of what constitutes a "deal" depends on the person's budget (which Steve was able to answer for me).

Second of all, my directive regarding crime was poorly misunderstood. What I was trying to show is, like you and Sis, I believe that crime knows no color and have practiced that in my former line of work in a city (my hometown) that is still trying to come to grips with that reality, even though they elected their first black mayor in 1993 (who is still in office). To say I've "bludgeon" you is extreme, yet I apologize for any misunderstanding.

And please, have some respect for David - if you have an issue with me, fine - but don't bring up a greeting to him while you are venting at me.

I've just come off of having a bad day here at the office - the result of my product manager losing my files after updating our computer system. So, if I misunderstood anything it's because I'm trying to come out here and fix my computer at the same time. So apologies to all.

Regards,
Kevin Goins - KevGo

Well, to bring it back to the topic at hand, if somebody is looking for a budget place, I like staying at the Ramada on Cass and Bagley. It's a little funky (smelling, that is), and there are some shady characters here and there. Also, the Metro Times just did a big story about how it is haunted. But, having said all that, I've always felt perfectly safe there, and I've always enjoyed it.

Also, sometimes you can find a $89 rate at the RenCen (which is a bargain, considering how nice it is). It all depends on what kinds of specials they're running. Fortuantely, my wife is my travel agent, so she keeps track of all that stuff for me.

StuBass - I will check to make sure if Lafayette Coney Island is still open. I just left Lowell's Ruins of Downtown Detroit, and it informs that Kennedy Square is going to be a park and garage. There is a picture, and I was trying to see if I saw the corner building where the Lafayette and American Coney Island should be.

DMeikle - I spend more time over on the Downtown Detroit Ruins and I found pictures of that famous train station "Michigan Central Railroad Station"

I also saw at least two establishments that I didn't know had been demolished. One of those is Bonnie Brooks. I had some great times there.

Just think 606 is now Ford Football Field. Actually, the exact spot where the club used to stand is a driveway into the building for pick up and deliveries to Ford Field, I believe.

P.S. Although the most devastating act to date was the demolition of Black Bottom/Paradise Valley.

This deeply historical site was replaced by a motorway.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Jim G (12.47.224.13) on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 - 07:10 am:

The southbound service drive runs right through PV. Check out Rick Beale's site (I believe there is a link from SD).
The Ford people made noises about having a plaque, or some other recognition, of PV placed somewhere in Ford Field. The only recognition is the Paradise Lounge, or something similar, but it isn't placed in any context and no explanation is given as to what Paradise Valley was.
During a gala pre-opening event, they borrowed pictures from our Detroit Jazz exhibit at the Museum of African American History and had them placed throughout the 'food area'.
The Ford's raised over $4 million that evening for a favored charity. Lars and I thought they could have come up with a few thousand to honor the site upon which their stadium sits.

For anybody that's coming from out of town in a group, I suggest you look closely at Atheneum Suites. It's expensive, but I think you can get up to six in a room. You've got all the great restaurants and the "Music Menu" in Greektown has great entertainment. The hotel has courtesy drivers who will drop you off or pick you up anywhere within 5 miles on demand

The Greektown casino next to the Atheneum, has great entertainment. Otis's Temptations has been there and also the Dramatics. People watched them as they played your favorite gaming table.

DMeikle - I worked in the Michigan Theater Building in the early 70's for the Government. While there, an Italian business man restored the Theater and began having top entertainers there such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. I took a tour of the restored building during that time and it was absolutely beautiful. Apparently, he didn't make enough money and he went bankrupt. But the Michigan Theater was grand when it was open.

Lafayette and American Coney are still going strong. And are not going to be displaced. Bonnie Brook is not completly demolished, it still exists but a Kmart occupies a section of the land. The rest is wilting away.

David - I am starting to get butterflies about our visit to the States. This should be fun, once we have it organised. I could not wish for a better holiday. It feels like my dreams are coming true from the years I used to think it could never happen. To think, our personalities and life experiences revolve around music that predominately came from the States and now we have a chance to thank some of the people in person. I better stock up with tissues, because I know I will have a tear in my eye for sure. England played football this week and I could not watch the game. I paid my sincere respects to Edwin Starr by playing all his old Ric Tic and Motown records and tinkered on my guitar that night. When I visit Detroit I will be thinking of him and all the others who have left us, over the years. This will be a great pilgrimage.

David you are right. This weeks events prove a valuable point for all of us. Thank god I have managed to say thank you to a few already! I am listening this minute to Curtis Blandon singing 'In the long run'! What a fantastic record. And yes it is true, songs like these are our fabric and pride and nothing can take that away from us. How honoured I feel that I can thank him right here on Soulfuldetroit. If any of you have never heard it, you must seek out this track and buy it now. You can then speak to Curtis right here. Where else can you get a platinum service like this? I first heard this track in 1974 and it secure my interest in vintage soul records for life. It was on the PYE disco demand LP I bought, where Ian Levine wrote his very first journalistic commission.

I was listening to that album the other night. I always loved that song.

Yes it's amazing to be able to converse with the likes of Curtis. A really pleasant surprise that was.

I re-typed Levine's notes from the sleeve for Curtis and he was really thrilled to hear the accolade.

I met Ian at Sky in about 1996 and he offered to buy the Ric Tic relics album I had with me at the time ( I used that album to show I was a genuine fan). I also had the Disco Demand album too. I asked Ian to autograph it for me and he did. I met him again last year at the Metropolitan and he remembered his visit to Sky and meeting me. It is a complicated web, this soul business, but I love it.

Hi Sis

We usually like to drive down Grand River but that is the long way, due to traffic lights etc.

It's great cruising down there when the sun is shining, Detroit music is pounding from the car speakers, and meeting someone special is just around the corner....you get my drift.

Takes around 40 minutes I would say. By Interstate 696 it is 25 minutes. It is handy for Lowell, hence the main reason for staying there.

Hi Bebopman

I was lucky enough to be with Graham when he interviewed Arthur in September 2001. He's a really nice guy, like most folks I've met in the city.

It would be nice to see him at our little event as I will be playing at least one Precisions recording.

I'm also looking forward to meeting you too, and hope you can make it along with some of your friends.

If I can get a half decent sound system together we will have a ball. That is my only fear at this stage.

Unfortunately I'm too far removed but hope Lowell is going to be able to spend some serious time putting things together. His other events are always a huge success.

The cafe is not really in Cass Corridor. It's more so on the WSU campus.

I used to park my car on the street everyday like everyone else and never worried about anything except a parking ticket.

People are moving TO Cass Corridor, like Honest? Johns resturant did recently. A lot of the buildings are being flipped into lofts, Performing Arts H.S going up, etc. In a minute property there will be unaffordable, I wish I had bought up some of it.

Sorry to say I won't be able to fly up to Detroit or anywhere for quite a while. We had to get rid of an employee this morning and it will take a while to replace & train a new one so guess who gets to work extra hours and weekends?I'm really P.O.'d but thats life.

Well now you have it, click on the <<- poster at the left and check out the amazing songlist, tour the Cass Cafe and its historic university neighborhood, and pack your bags for SoulfulDetroit Night. I look forward to meeting many of you and, from the experience of a similar Fabulous Ruins of Night of Detroit night, I assure you that this could be the greatest mass blind date you ever had. See you in the D!

I want to check this out too, and I was wandering if Lowell or any locals (to Detroit) can confirm whether this is the same week end as the DEMF, now called Movement, I believe. If so, will this make hotel space scarece and/or expensive? Just curious, I'll have no idea if I can go or not for at least a few more days since I work at odd times (including many Saturdays so far this year)...

Say Hey, folks ....

A longtime lurker of Soulfull Detroit, patron of the music scene in Detroit, and local hell-raiser in the Discuss Detroit Forum; yep, dat's me!! Gotta say, I love your discussion and history.

Looking forward to the event. I've been putting all my old 45s on CD and look forward to hearing the same music mentioned on these threads in the presence of other music lovers/makers. I'd promise to dance with someone, but still on crutches .... lookout JJ Jackson, 'cuz "It's Alright!" Usta do a mean bop offa that one.... smiley

Out of towners .... don't fret about the Corktown Inn. It's an OK place for a weekend. (The incident was a domestic squabble, coulda happened in KC for all we know.) Those catching the Dog can get a cab anytime of the night or day to take ya to the Cass Cafe (or anyplace in Detroit), at the entrance to the station. (North John Lodge .... Forest exit .... Right on Forest a couple of blks to Cass .... Right on Cass and You're there.) I live a couple of blks from the venue (15years worth.)

Thanks Dave & Lowell .... see ya there!!

Black-atcha .... and again thanks for the memories

I'd bet he's got some rare stuff to boot...

You could bring the vinyl and it would be fun to hear it, but there will be no way to play it. It is going CDs to Amplifier to Speakers only.

And I am having trouble figuring that out. Can anyone who is around here help me out. EmailLowell@bhere.com I think I have the elements of what I need, but I know very little about sound equipment. I need someone to hold my hand.

I do have a collection of super images from David et al that I will be projecting big screen on two locations. That part I can handle.

Hi everyone,
Unfortunately,Vonnie and I will not be able to attend as I am still sick and in great pain and malaise.
I was sick on the day the contingent arrived but I tried to hide it as best I could.
We were really counting the days to the event and we feel really disheartened.

.
I just got back from the hospital emergency room yet again.
I must get to the bottom of this and have it taken care of once and for all.

Vonnie and I both apologize and we wish everyone a great time!!

Sue, if U feel unsafe N Detroit, then JUST DON'T COME 2 Detroit, but PLEASE DON'T interfere with someone else wanting 2 come 2 the event...no offense, but U just may B one of those people that R afraid 2 walk N a crowd on a bright sun shiney day...I understand, it isn't safe anywhere these days, (not even where U live). The sad part is there is no hiding place...I'm sorry U feel like that. Then maybe U should stay N the house and never go out, because some of those people U meet could B undercover crimminals..I mean, U NEVER KNOW...Maybe the person who brings U your mail. The point I'm trying 2 make is~most of the murders incidents that happen (Detroit) R isolated anyway. I mean people don't just go around killing other people 4 no reason, it's usually drug related or whatever. We just can't B Hermits N our homes...I don't know where U live, but R U telling me that your community is crime free???

David, Harry and Carl are in the D. They stopped by my place last night after arriving in from NYC. It was great to see them and to meet Carl Dixon in person for the first time -- he is quite the crack up. We built a fire and had a relaxing evening previewing images for the projection and listening to the fabulous song list they have compiled. We'll see all of you on Friday, either in person or in spirit.

Bobby - this is the first time we have had chance to get on the internet since we met you all on Sunday. Hope you are feeling better.Looks like we burnt you out that day - wow! Get well soon and take it easy! And we would like to thank you and Weldon for a great day around Philly looking at all the studios, The Uptown and everything else connected with our visit to Philly. You both were fabulous and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, truly. Please pass our regards on to Ceasar, it was great to meet him. In addition we met Mike McClain and the lovely Annie, it was great. Also when we all met the great Lee Andrews down the street - double WOW! Bunny Sigler too, every body, triple WOW! To round the evening off nicely, none other than a visit to Mr Frank Bendillini, who wrote and produced one of my (Carl's) personal favourites - I'm gonna love you a long long time/Patti & the Emblems. If we have forgotten anybody, please accept our appologies - we were truly overwhelmed and as I said to Weldon on the day - we are truly overweldoned!!!!

Monday, we headed for Ney York City and spent an afternoon searching for the classic studios of the Big Apple! Bell Sound - what a shock! However, in the morning we headed to Harlem and took a visit inside the famous Apollo Theatre, ate some great soul food and ended up in a studio with some guys cutting a reggae/hip hop track! It was another 'champion' day.

Got to dash - we are in Detroit and it is cooking! The food is on the table in 'Honest Johns'.

Carl, David and Harry

you met
Lee Andrews!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
only one thing to say

"I've Had It"

at least I can play my Crimson white Demo' of it.
OR
'never the less'
I first got into the
music of Lee Andrews and the Hearts
way back in 1971.

My brother and a mate paid 10 pounds in 1971 for the address of a record catalouge full of the obscure uptempo dancers in it that were big at the time.
Hence the big,big,price.
It was out of Philly and I found where it was hid,and the first 2 pages was full of mostly material by Mr.Andrews and co.
Crazy days man.

I forgot to give the props to that keyboard player. His name is Yankee Jack and he,s been playing since 1963.Now he makes Keywest his home.He does a lot of original type risque songs. For example---SHE,S NEVER HUGGED A PARAKEET BUT SHE'S KISSED A COCKATOO,--I CAN'T GET OVER YOU AS LONG AS YOU'RE STILL UNDER HIM. He plays like Dr.john and sings like Lonny Mack, not a bad combination.

Hey Mr Magic! We Know - Mike told us this morning. The shock was, as David stepped out of his motel room, who was also stood outside - Mike and he had booked the same motel in Farmington Hills as us. What about that!!!! He and George were underneath us in the cheaper rooms. It was amazing. We had a Motown lecture right there in the car park. We look forward to meeting you.

Yesterday we (I) met the lovely Sis and Vic who gave us some valuable information about the scene in the city. I had a plonk on the piano and we spoke for a couple of hours about the gospel connection. Last night we met Jim and Lars who kindly accompanied us to the Bakers Piano Bar and we enjoyed none other than Dr Lonnie Smith. A great day again. The day we arrived in Detroit, we called Ken Sands and had a great education with him to. I could not believe my ears when he mentioned it was him on the tambourine on 'We shall overcome/The Magic Tones on MAH's. I had to get his autograph, because I bought that record moons ago and wondered who were the musicians on it. He had other stories that would make your chin drag on the floor for the rest of your life.

Again, this is overwhelming and if I have forgotten anybody, please forgive. Today, we are meeting Fred Bridges. Gulp! I feel so humble and as a novice at this cannot do justice like others. David and Harry keeping pulling rabbits out of hats.

Bobby - please take it easy. I know you will be there in spirit. If there is a free internet connection, maybe we could be on line and chat via Yahoo all night. You could have a virtual dance with us all. It can be opened via Internet Explorer on www.yahoo.com without loading the programme. onto the pc.

I think I have rambled too much. Until later....

It was a great night--many thanks to David, Harry, and Lowell for making it happen. As a Metro Detroiter I'm embarrassed that it took two guys from Scotland to get this bunch of Detroit Soul Lovers together in one place, but I certainly do appreciate it. Meeting Chico Leverett was a thrill, and Joey Kingfish had bunches of great and hilarious stories to tell--thanks to C. Bell/Eric for bringing him along. A few people Sue didn't mention whose company I enjoyed: Ed Wolfrum, Artie Fields, Mark Speck, Vicki Alexander, Mike Hanks' daughter, and one of the Tillmans (can't remember which one but he was a wonderful guy). And then there was the guy who stopped at the bar just to use the bathroom, got hooked by the great slides (kudos for those visuals, guys--they made a perfect backdrop) and spent half an hour explaining that the photos of Detroit landmarks were taken from the wrong angle at the wrong time of day and were of the wrong buildings. There's a job for him as a critic somewhere. I know I'm forgetting people, but it was all kind of a blur--a very, very pleasant blur. Thanks again to everyone who put the evening together and everyone who attended. It was a memorable night.

Hi Guys and Gals!!
I wish we could have been there!!
When I phoned there last night, the sound at the other end of the wire was so festive that I could have leapt through the telphone cable just to be there.
It was good to speak to Lowell, David and Carl and to hear the elation in their voices.
Vonnie and I WERE both there in spirit and in soul.

I wish we would have had those dorky name tags on though as we weren't sure if someone was from Soulful Detroit or just a person that showed up.

Davie Gordon you missed a nice party, you could have talked about Detroit 50s and 60s recordings with a lot of the people at the party that made them.

Great event last night! We should do this once, if not twice, a year! It was really great meeting everyone from the forum and the soulful legends!

The music was great, too! I heard a lot of great songs that were unknown to me before! I was literally toe-tapping all night long! It's good to hear our music blared from loudspeakers, seems to make it sound all the better! This slideshow was nice, too.

Big thumbs up to the Soulful Detroit Night!

Speaking of hearing new songs, the one I'd never heard was Suspicion by the Originals--incredible! Further evidence (as if any were needed) that the stuff Motown left in the can was just as great as the stuff they issued. Now I've got to get that CD...

Joe, it's on the US "Very Best of The Originals"

What a treat! I was tapped in from 7:30 to 11:30 P.M. and am really excited about the material collected. Now I need to go out and find some of the Goldmine and Kent compilations a lot of this stuff came from.

David, Carl and Harry were great to meet. They each have a true passion for this music coupled with an astonishing amount of knowledge between them. I dare say there are few people on the planet more Soulfully knowledegeable. Thanks to each and Lowell for hosting an awesome event !!

We are speechless in Detroit! It was great. What a successful evening and with all the above celebs. In addition Maxine Wood dropped by, Stanley Mitchell and our very own Clay, who called by later. The Tilmon gentleman was Abe's brother. He played in the touring band with the Detroit Emeralds. Was Ken Sands mentioned earlier - sorry I cannot operate an applemac! But it was good to see him again for the second time on this holiday.

Bobby, I was not aware you rang four times. It was good to speak to you. Thank you for taking the trouble.

Today - we made a trip to the Detroit Memorial Park and paid our respects to Darrell Banks and Florence Ballard. In addition, we learnt Phillippe Wynne was buried there too. Then, we also we went to Ann Arbor to their local library and saw Joe Hunter, Uriel Jones, Marcus Belgrave and Frank Bryant perform a selection of Motown hits, accompanied by Terry Hood. They told stories and answered questions from the audience. We have plans for this evening, but will post later about that.

May I say thanks to all who were there last night. It was very memorable and I feel so honoured to be in the city celebrating the music that originated here.

Hey Gang:
What Carl has said goes for me, too. This has been a wonderful trip I made from the Big Apple to the Motor City. From having lunch and drinks with the legendary(!) Mike McLean to the event at the Cass Cafe, it has been a wonderful ride. Finally got to meet SisDetroit (a GREAT Lady in person and on the sight),Sue Whithall (don't let the "tough cookie" fool ya' - she really is a sweet woman), Medusa9e (what a smile! what a charmer!) and of course David,Lowrell, Carl and company. Clay McMurray came by & parted words of wisdom about the music industry and Dennis Coffey talked about his upcoming releases.

Visiting the resting places of Florence Ballard & Darrell Banks was sobering - Florence's marker didn't mention her being a Supreme while Darrell's grave was unmarked! We cannot allow this to happen to the legends we say we respect! I suggest strongly that we collect funds so that Darrell's resting place will have the proper marker.

Seeing the Funks in Ann Arbor was a blast!

I gotta go get ready for a couple of thangs we're doing later on tonight. Will keep all posted!

Regards,

Last night truly was a dizzying evening. It was truly great especially to be in the company of Joe Weaver (very charming gent) and Clay McMurray (who held us captive with his entertaining stories about his exploits in the biz, past and present).

David, Carl, Harry, KevGo and I have been running around like wild rabbits all day, with the grave visiting and the impromptu Funk Brothers show (what a treat that was!). Right now we're grabbing us a well-needed bite to eat and we have some other fun stuff to do tonight. I'll speak more about the event when I get home.

And I'm embarrassed to say that I missed the Funk Brothers at the Ann Arbor library even though it happened only four blocks from my house. Top of pageBottom of page   By Carl Dixon London (62.31.40.155) on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 06:29 am:

Now I have returned to the UK, I am trying to find the words to thank everybody who has made this a holiday of a lifetime for me. It is difficult, as all, have contributed to the last 10 wonderful days.

I must begin by thanking David who invited me in the first place, to accompany him and Harry on this special visit. His passion has opened my eyes further to the great music of Detroit and helped me come to terms with my aspirations in life. Understanding, in this detail, why Detroit has featured throughout our lives, is starting to make sense. Although thousands of miles away, we are indeed just a few of the fans who helped a little along the way by simply buying the records all those years ago. I thank David for having the conviction to do all this and play an important role in educating me further. I must also thank Lowell for his help with all the background activities he was involved in. I thank him and his family for their hospitality during our visit. In addition, Harry, thank you for driving us all over the place. It must have been stressful at times I am sure.

Now, I have a new understanding and love of the music from Detroit and Philadelphia. I am ashamed that I know so little of what I thought I knew so much! Mark and Kev your knowledge is unbelievable. To have you sat either side of me in the car talking about what you love best was an honour (well, at least when you were awake ha ha!!).

Mr Magic, I am so pleased I met you too. You have special talents and being so young have opportunities ahead of you. To see Joe Weaver give you that embracing hug when he found out you idolised Jackie Wilson, made his day, I am sure. He told me they were friends and your acknowledgment of him, his music and attending the soulfuldetroit evening impressed him. It was nice to meet Gloria too. Please give her my regards.

Sis It was a pleasure to meet you too. You are an active person in the community and a joy to be with. I will never forget the look on Uriel Jones face in Ann Harbor library when he stood by the books and I asked you I am looking for somebody called Uriel Jones, I think he is a drummer. He grinned and knew what I was up to. What a thrill. I read Joes book on the plane coming home. It was fun. What a humble man. Thanks Sis.

Finally I must thank Detroit! One of the greatest cities I have ever visited in my life. The music from the city is one of the wonders of the world in my opinion and I will be back to visit, in more ways than one, I hope. The talented people and workforce that grace the city are unprecedented. I feel big changes coming for Detroit and I would love to be part of it, somehow. Today, I shall be emailing the Detroit City authorities to try and get them to dismantle the Whites record shop (Ferry Park??), which is locked up and heading for dereliction and rebuild it in a museum to showcase how records and the recording industry needed outlets like this to provide services to customers in the city during its heyday. I would hate the building to be demolished and lost forever. Inside, it still has a visual history of what was happening in the business, the day it closed. I also agree with Kev, that the grave of Darrell Banks, who is so highly revered, should have something erected to celebrate his contribution to the music business. In addition, could we not approach the Memorial services and ask them to update the history information on entrance to the graveyard, by including a section dedicated to those involved in the music business that are buried there?

I have rambled a little too much. It is good to see United Sound up and running and opportunities developing in the city. Thank you Detroit also Honest Johns and the library for providing food and information, in addition to the free Internet access, we used on occasions.

What was great about the Cass Cafe event was that everybody from the Forum -- everybody who loves Detroit music -- was invited, it wasn't exclusionary. Some folks came over from Lowell's other Forum, and indeed, some innocent bystanders liked what they saw and joined the party -- this wasn't a private, invitation-only thing.

Mr. Magic, I enjoyed meeting you at the Cafe, but didn't realize you were a Jackie Wilson guy. Do you know Let George Do It? It's a record on a plain white label with stamped red print that Berry Gordy and Billy Davis wrote and Jackie performed, promoting George Edwards' campaign for State Representative in 1958 (George was Berry's brother-in-law; his wife was Esther Gordy Edwards). Only one or two hundred copies were pressed, and it's a great record. My e-mail address is jmoorehous@aol.com, so drop me a note and I'll tell you more.

Sis--any chance you could scan the photo you took of the crew in Ann Arbor and share it with us?

Best,

My sincere due apologies--
TO ALL MY friends here on soulfuldetroit.

I have not been on this forum for several weeks, and living in Detroit... well unfortunately, I missed the chance opportunity (of a lifetime) to meet with all my friends here, in person, at the Cass Cafe due to illness.

Yet in determined anticipation, I had dressed to attend the event, loaded my camera-- yet after much self-debating (with an intense fever) if I really should attend I knew was not able to do so, the week of taking heavy prescribed medication would dictate that I would not attend that one particular evening event in question.

Alas, it was a lousy two weeks for me-- please accept my apologies that I could not be there with all of you. I read all the above threads, read all what I had actually missed.

David, Ralph, Sue, KevGo, Julian, Carl Dixon, SisDetroit, Julian, Medusa9, and everyone else I might have missed, I missed the only given chance to be with you guys, all in one place.

If there is a next time, I hope that it is soon and I WILL be there for that one. I'm just glad to be back on my feet, on this forum, and it's good to be back here, home like family, where we belong.

Again, due to extreme circumstances I'm sorry I was not able to attend and be there personally with you, with all my (Detroit) friends who might have attended the event, and to those I had met on this here 'cherished' discussion forum.

Jim,
I hope you're doing OK. Circumstances did not allow for me to attend either. Maybe next time for both of us.

Jim:
It was best that you take care of yourself so that we can see you the next time we have this event.
Also, I'll be in the Detroit area sometime in June or July. When I nail down a date, I'll let you know so that we can definitely get together while I'm in town.
Your friend always,
Kevin Goins - KevGo
