As a radio PD I am always looking for stories around a great record, and reasons to play other things than the most common super hits.
This project is to find songs that include lyrics about other artists. I have two to start with:
Arthur Conley "Sweet Soul Music" Atlantic/Atco 1967 (about Lou Rawls, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, James Brown)
Dyke & The Blazers "We Got More Soul" Original Sound 1969 (Ray Charles, James Brown, Johnnie Taylor, Aretha Franklin, can't hear tha last two)
Any Motown stuff or other soul songs you know about? Let me know!
Detroit forever

Veering slightly off-topic, there are some nice Soul references in the (very Soulful) Beres Hammond's hit "Rock Away".
"Remember the songs - used to make us rock away?
We danced all night to the songs they played..
...and you had to hold your woman real close when Smokey starts to sing.
Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Spinners all the way,
Aretha Franklin.
Patti Labelle used to make me drift away
Play Stevie play [nice harmonica riff]
Sam Cooke Any day"
I agree with his last verse:
"Right now, we need a brand new start
People everywhere need more music from the heart."

Lars;
The last two names in "We Got More Soul" are , believe it or not , Pearl Bailey and Nancy Wilson.
In james Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing' , James namechecks Kc And The Sunshine Band , Barry White and Parliament.
Speaking of Parliament , in "Bigfoot Music" Glenn Goins sings "If James Brown could see me now". Also , Funkadelic's "Take It to The Stage" has several contemporary band references. Like I say, these are more namechecks than tributes but pretty good records.

This is a very ambitious endevour. A DJ on WDET-FM Public Radio, John Moshier, (who is also the librarian) did a five hour show on a night with a full moon where every song had the word "moon" in it. Ritchie,
Isn't "Go Go Train" by Jackie Payne (Jetstream) ?
Lars,
There were a couple of tribute records issued
when Sam Cooke died - Donald Height's "A Tribute
To Sam" on Old Town and Bobby Harris' "We Can't
Believe You're Gone" on Atlantic for starters.
Then there's "Soul Heaven" by The Dixie Drifter
on Roulette.
There's a few more Otis Redding tributes
"Otis Is Gone" by Lattimore Brown (Sound Stage 7)
and one by Marke Jackson on Diamond whose title
I can't recall. Then there's "Otis Sleep On" by
Arthur Conley on Atco.
If you want to go waaaaay back Johnny Ace's death
produced a few tribute discs including ones by
Varetta Dilard and Detroit's own Patti Jerome.
I suppose this is all pretty academic - God knows
how you'd track these down as very few have ever
made it to CD.
Good luck ! Davie

This is fantastic. I have found a lot of the records above in my own record collection. "Cole, Cooke & Redding", "Tribute To A King", "Detroit, Michigan", "You're Right, Ray Charles" and others. I'm still looking for the Spyder Turner version of "Stand By Me"... I must have it somewhere...

Thanks for the missing names in "We Got More Soul"... sounds like Nancy Williamson to me!
A real discovery for me was "Having A Party" by Ronnie Mitchell. What a great happy swinger! I found it on a Red Bird/Blue Cat CD collection from 1991 in my library. I love the Sam Cooke original but this was really a killer I had totally forgotten. Thanks again! By mistake I played a track, "Fever" by Alvin Robinson on the same CD. Wow! That label was hot!

I noticed nobody mentioned "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder, which not only mentions Duke (Ellington), but also (Count) Basie, (Glenn) Miller, Satch-A-Mo (Louis Armstrong), and a voice like Ella's (Fitzgerald).
Not a soul record, but in Alabama's country hit from a few years back, "Dancin', Shaggin' on the Boulevard", they pay tribute to a number of beach music acts in the song (apparently, they had played on the Beach circuit before their legendary country career), including the Drifters and Jackie Soul.
Just thought of the Animals' song "The Story of Bo Diddley", where they mention a few people and even diss songs like "Take Good Care of My Baby" to boot!
Best,

Henry Jeromes inst of Uptight isnt a patch on the Album cut by John Barry, which is under the name and album cover picture of David McCallan,of U.N.C.L.E. Fame.
I dont know why either, but I still have the Henry Jerome 45,and when I heard the Barry version, well,as the Jerome was a rarity in 1972 I thought that was it,when 20years later I am shown and listening to a far better dancer all round,my opinion only.

I stumbled upon this record many years ago, not R&B but blues, called "Red's Dream" by Lousiana Red. It was on a series of Roulette Records double sided hits. I picked it up at the first radio station I worked for, so I'm not sure if it was commercialy available or a DJ copy. Anyway, I picked it up because one side was "Easier Said Than Done" by the Essex, but the flip, "Red's Dream" was a hoot and has become a real favorite.
In the song, apparently recorded around the time of the Cuban missle crisis, Red first admonishes Castro to "get that junk outta Cuba" or "I'll grab you by yo byeerd/ and give you a Jawja shave!" Then Red is summoned to D.C. by the President who asks for help. Red is only happy to oblige but first tells the Prez "you take the House/ I'll take the Senate/ gonna make a few changes/ put a few soul brothers in it/ Ray Charles, Lightnin' Hopkins/ a man call Jimmy Reed/ Bo Diddley, Big Maybelle/ s'all I need/ It was a dream/ dream a had last night/ dreamed I went down to the U.N./ and set the whole nation right."
A true patriot and statesman; somebody give Red a medal!

R&B mentioned artists referring to themselves, and the hands-down king of the self reference is James Brown. He does it so often it's hard to list all the tunes, but there are two basic variations:
1) ...blah blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah sing
...blah blah blah, blah blah blah, James Brown gonna do his thing.
2) ...blah blah blah, blah blah blah down
...blah blah blah, until you seen me do, the James Brown.
These both appear in There Was a Time, but also in countless other tunes.
Distant second place for self references: Stevie Wonder
Example: I Was Made to Love Her, "...you know Stevie ain't gonna leave ya'".

Lars, re: "Red's Dream", as many laughs as that record has afforded me and everyone I've introduced it to over the years, the real humor in it is not quite being sure how much of it was intentional. Maybe Louisiana Red thought it was an informed topical blues!
SteveS & R&B, re: self-referential artists/songs--right up there with James Brown is Bo Biddley, who put his name in the title more than once. My favorite is "Bo Diddley's A Gunslinger"; love that photo of Bo in western gear. And, to use a line from "Rockin'My Life Away"--"My name is Jerry Lee Lewis and I'm damn sure here to stay." Dobie Gray says "Gimmie the BEAT boys..."
What about "I Cried" by Tammy Montgomery (Tammi
Terrell) on Try Me label prod. by James Brown?
She refers to all Scepter/Wand hits of the day
who she was really under contract to. Perhaps
that's how James was able to record her--"If
You See Bill...Don't Make Me Over...I'm only
Human...Everybody Loves A Lover...Any Day Now"
Also, the end of "I'm In Love" by Wilson Pickett
he sings "I can Knock on Wood just like Eddie
Floyd did".
"Hulla Hoppin'" by Idalia Boyd on Dimension
refers to Chubby (Checker) and Dee Dee (Sharp)
as she sings Chubby threw away his Limbo bar
and Dee Dee's really looking sharp.
"Dancin' Party" by Chubby Checker calls out

At the tail end of Gene Chandler's "There Goes The Lover," he sings "..talkin' 'bout Carl, Otis, Jerry, Jackie...." a/k/a Carl Davis, Otis Leavill, Jerry Butler, Jackie Wilson.
Sam Cooke's "Having A Party" - "Play that one called 'Soul Twist'...play that one called 'I Know',...don't forget 'The Mashed Potato'.."
King Curtis, Barbara George & Dee Dee Sharp respectively.
Teena Marie's "My Dear Mr. Gaye" (obviously!) & "Casanova Brown" (a song loosely discussing her breakup with Rick James)
And from the British...
Spandau Ballet "True" - "....listening to Marvin all night long..." - Marvin Gaye
Elton John "Club At The End Of The Street" contains a reference to Marvin as well
ABC "When Smokey Sings" "...slyest smiles, the sharpest suits and miracles made real...Luther croons, Sly is the original innovator....James screams....but nothing can compare to When Smokey Sings."

I think George Harrison had a couple of songs about Smokey too, but I don't remember the titles.
And Melissa Manchester had one called "Stevie's Wonder".

"Big Bird" by Eddie Floyd was a tribute to Otis Redding.
"Darling You're Wonderful" by Marvin Gaye namechecks the Spinners, Stevie, and Sam Cooke.
"Who's Gonna Pick Up The Pieces" by Chuck Jackson mentions Tommy Hunt, Jackie Wilson and Clyde McPhatter.
"Keep On Truckin" by EJK has a sly mention of the Temptations
The Whispers "In the Mood" mentions Marvin Gaye.
and the Miracles "I'll Try Something New" has a nice little reference to Frankie Avalon's "Venus."
And although this isn't necessarily a namecheck, one of my favorite lines in music is when Jerry Butler sings "You tell him that JERRY said he'll never letcha go baby" in "Never Gonna Give You Up." Just typical cool from the Iceman.

George Harrison's tribute to Smokey Robinson was called "Pure Smokey," from his 1976 album "Thirty Three and 1/3".There was a fantastic cut by a group called The Pasadenas that came out in the 80's called "Tribute (Right On)" that namechecks Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Ike & Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and the Jackson Five. I love this record.John Cougar Mellencamp's "R-O-C-K in the USA" namechecks a bunch of artists too, including, I believe, Martha Reeves. And how about Kool & the Gang's "Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)," which begins with the lead singer saying "Like Marvin, huh?"Oh yeah, there was a record by Paul Davis (best remembered for "I Go Crazy" called "Superstar" that was a tribute to Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder. It made the Top 40, but don't ask me how. It's not very good.

...And what about Frankie Beverly & Maze's Silky, Silky Soul Singer tribute to Marvin Gaye.
Johnny Taylors "Soul Heaven" just before he passed away.
For some strange reason, a new song is out now By TUPAC, similar to SOUL HEAVEN.

Fayette, thanks for clearing up those lyrics to Dobe Gray's "Drift Away." I forever was wondering what the chorus was saying! Recently, my niece's teacher had been playing the song for her class. I was surprised to hear my niece singing it at home! And when we wanted to sing it together, neither one of us was clear on the chorus (yikes!). So that was the end of that... LOL
