OK, it's probably been discussed, and I missed it.
Saw a reference to a D.A. Pennebaker documantary titled Only The Strong Survive, that uses archival footage and new material from Rufus and Carla Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Mary Wilson, Isaac Hayes and others. Opens May 2nd. Haven't heard a thing about it, until I saw a reference in AARP The Magazine. Anyone know any details.

By the way, the readers of the mag gave SITSOM the "La Chaise d'Or"--their best movies for grownups awards--for Best Documentary. Take THAT, Michael Moore.

Saw a screening two weeks ago.

It is an excellent film featuring about half live concert footage shot between 2000 and early 2002 and half off stage. Although everyone is great, the real star is Rufus Thomas, and the film is dedicated to his memory. The ostensible framework of the movie is Fox-TV's Roger Friedman "where are they now" look at a group of soul legends who are still out working, but because it jumps from artist to artist, it really doesn't have the thematic flow and coherence of SITSOM. The music is great, however.

It is scheduled for limited theatrical release on April 22.

Pennebaker says he would love to do more of this kind of film and that he already has a list of people he would like to feature.
