John....
....Didn't the 4 Seasons cut a promo version of "Big Girls Don't Cry" for Joey Reynolds?
Or the Shy Guys for Scott Regan?
I won't mention the lyrics for Tom Shannon--talk about self promotion, he wrote it--that were fit to The Rockin Rebel's (?) "Wild Weekend".
Oh boy. Thinkin' about these makes me want to go "Bobbin With The Robin".

Douglasm,
If I might add... yes, you're absolutely right.
Yes, I can still hear it on the radio, back then,
"...Joey Reynolds, Joey Reynolds, swing Joey swing!"
You know, 'XYZ had the Four Seasons promote a 'redo' of their version hit of "BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY", for THE JOEY REYNOLDS SHOW on 'Club 1270' ("that's easy to remember" as the promo went) in the first half of 1966.
Before coming to "WIXIE", JOEY REYNOLDS was once 'voted' "the number one disc jockey in the country" by the 'Gavin Poll', for 1964.
In knowing of that, WXYZ went out of their way to hire REYNOLDS, with BIG dollar signs, in their attempt to 'deter' the massive "KEENER" ratings Scott Regen had pulled for WKNR (in Detroit), from 1965, back then, and into 1966.
At that time, with Scott Regen on board, he was the 'number one' disc-jockey in Detroit. WKNR was 'pulling in' a phenominal (and unheard of) 29 share... during the evening hours Regen was on "Keener", nightly... between 7 and 10 PM!
WKNR, had the dubious distinction of having (at least) two promotional '45 records 'cut' for the "SCOTT REGEN SHOW", as they were introduced on "KEENER 13", in early 1966:
"SCOTT REGEN SHOW (We Gotta Go)" by the SHY GUYS
"SCOTT'S ON SWINGERS (S.O.S)" by EDWIN STARR
This was aside to all those other WKNR promos, for the "Scott Regen Show", just the same, promos made by the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Sam the Sham, Tim Tam & the Turn-Ons, Beach Boys, Supremes, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, etc., and all these 'KNR promos 'sold' the public to the Scott Regen Show!
Of course, ultimately JOEY REYNOLDS failed to take away from any share of the "Keener" pie, per se, while he was with WXYZ.
Eventually, the "JOEY REYNOLDS SHOW" had 'bombed' on WXYZ, showing dismally poor ratings.
After several months 'going up against' WKNR and Scottie Regen, well, the game was over... Reynolds soon became just another Detroit radio 'memory' by year's end, all this, in 1966....

Joyce "Fenderella" Irby - "Mr DJ" (1989)
Didn't the group Zhane' also have a song called "Hey, Mr DJ"?

Hey Uptight,
Oh yes.
ZHANE'... (pronounced Jah-Nay) did have a 'hit' called "HEY, MR. DJ", released in 1994.
Ever listen to the 12" re-mix version of that particular one?
That-- was even better!

Jim,
Scotty Regen played a hilarious trick on Joey Reynolds one night, he stole a bit from him right on the air before Joey was even able to do it-- they used to monitor each other's shows. Scott wouldn't let me write about it, but sometime I hope to get permission to tell the story, because it just displays how quick-witted and adept an air personality Scott was. In the meantime, I tell the story offline (laugh) ...

Thanks Sue,
Neddless to say, Scott "Burger" was loved by many on "Keener 13" then, of course and that would have to include you and I!
In contrast, from a reporter's standpoint-- you kinda remind me of him, when he was the air on WKNR then, giving us the 'latest' information from his 'contacts' in the music scene, Regen always seemed to shared with us while he was on the air at "Keener".
To that extend, he must have been an 'inspiration' to you as well, likewise, you do the same... same manner, only difference is, you do all your work in writing!
Yes please-- if you would, get permission on that Regen / Reynolds story 'bit'. We'd love to hear about it!
All I know is that Joey Reynolds would (attempt to)'put down' Scottie Regen, while he was on the air, this was at the time WXYZ was "dukin' it" out with WKNR, for the most part in 1966.
After a while of this Reynolds (negative) exchange which was going on-- and oh boy, did Scott Regen get even!!!

Thanks Jim,
That's a great compliment, I'm very fond of Scotty.
Did you hear him dis Joey on the air? Because he was usually pretty subtle about it, much more positive a guy.

Cousin Bruce Morrow (who is often seen on TJ Lubinksy's PBS specials) had theme music recorded by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons in the early 1960s. Brucie still uses the jingle for his show on WCBS-FM.
As far as songs mentioning DJ's, there's "Hey DJ" by the World's Famous Supreme Team (produced by Malcolm MacLaren).

Susan,
In regards to your question whether Scottie (as he would spell it out his name) ever 'dis' on Joey Reynolds, that I don't know but I would venture to say he did not.
I began to listen to "The Scott Regen Show" on WKNR from the time he first signed on "Keener 13" the first week of June, 1965.
Never, I never heard Scottie say anything negative or bad about someone, or anyone for that matter while he was on the 'air' at 'KNR, even of 'those' who had 'sought him out', for all intents and purposes.
In retrospect, there was no need for Scottie to align himself to such lower standards, likewise, of such manner against anyone (such as Reynolds), only because you must remember, Regen was so popular on "Keener" he was virtually 'untouchable', he didn't need to go after anyone on the radio, back then... period.
Again, at that time in 1966, Scottie was the 'number one' radio personality in Motown.
'Those' others 'menials' (like Reynolds) had to go AFTER HIM-- and thos loyal "Burger" fans had let Reynolds know, that whatever he was up to they were not 'willing' to go along with that one!
But regardless, Scott Regen was truly a 'class act' of his own-- always a true 'gentleman' during the time he was on the radio (in Motown)with WKNR, on "KEENER 13"!

Jim,
I've seen him spell it both ways. For that matter, Regen has also been Regen, by Scott himself.
By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 10:11 pm: |
Oops I mean Regen has also been Regan. No consistency ...and I prefer Scotty, thanks.

Susan,
It's not a 'biggie', but clearly there was only just one, the one and only-- Scott Regen!
