Who's The Other Singer?

Soul lovers,

Sometimes you hear a second voice on a record and wonder "Who's that?" You look at the label and find no answer. I'll give some examples:

"Blowing In The Wind" by Stevie Wonder... the other voice without credit is Clarence Paul.

"Teach Me Tonight" by Stevie Wonder... the other voice without credit is Levi Stubbs.

"Bring It On Home To Me" by Sam Cooke... the other voice without credit is Lou Rawls.

"Swinging On A Star" by Big Dee Erwin... the female voice without credit is Little Eva.

"Someday We'll Be Together" by Diana Ross & The Supremes... the male voice without credit is Johnny Bristol.

I am not talking about the background singers doing ooohs and aaahs here. What other records do you know about with a "secret" well known singer/guest without name on the label?

Lars

Stevie Wonder - "Creepin'" (later released as the B-side of "Another Star") featured Minnie Riperton sharing the vocals.

Steve Winwood - "Higher Love" with Chaka Khan.

Jerry Butler - "He Will Break Your Heart" had Curtis Mayfield singing the high harmony part on the chorus.

Samantha Sang - "Emotion" with Barry Gibb singing the "call & response".

Kevin Goins - KevGo

"Slow Twistin'" by Chubby Checker features Dee
Dee Sharp
"Two Lovers" by Mary Wells--Mary once told me
where her voice sounds double tracked on the
chorus it is Martha Reeves singing with her.
When I asked Martha about it, she didn't
remember doing it. Maybe Smokey, the producer,
would remember.

Mary Wells.....Guaranteed for A Lifetime....that is Martha doing the "who will take Mary's love, it's guaranteed for a lifetime"

Mickey Stevenson is credited with helping the Marvelettes on Slow Twistin........however, there is an uncredited male vocalist on Good Luck Charm.....see if you think you know who it is.

The "Are You Ready" question on Barbara Masons' smash were Kenny Gamble, Herb Johnson and Weldon Mc Dougal III. The girl answers were the Tiffanys.

Top of pageBottom of page   By TonyRussi (68.18.230.25) on Monday, March 10, 2003 - 04:42 pm:

Hey John, Is it Clarence Paul on "Good Luck Charm"?I'll have to remember to listen to that tonite and "Guaranteed For A Lifetime" as I never knew or thought that it was Martha .Cool. Thanks for the info. And Bobby Eli I kinda thought that was the Romeos on those early Barbara Mason sides(which was Kenny Gambles group, right?)I never heard of the Tiffanys. Thanks for all the info!

Not really Soul music but Mick Jagger sings the chorus on Carly Simon's "You're So Vain".

Michael Jackson sings the chorus for Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me".

Sam Cooke & Lou Rawls really made a great duo. It's too bad they only did a couple of tracks.
Are there any others besides "Soothe Me" & "Bring It On Home to Me"?

"Are You Ready" - I have a stereo copy of this & it has an oddball panning of the male/female backing vocals. It's pre-Hendrix panning strangeness. Were you there for the Stereo Mix, Weldon?

Top of pageBottom of page   By John Lester (81.132.14.126) on Monday, March 10, 2003 - 05:52 pm:

Tony

Well done.....you know your Clarence Paul...in all my years, you are the only one that has recognised him...

Play "..Lifetime" in stereo and listen to only one speaker...then it is is clear that it is Martha....its the way Martha sings "lifetime" that gives it away......enjoy..

Cal Street first did Martha's "He Doesn't Love Her Anymore" and so there is a strong chance that Cal's background vocal is somewhere in the final mix for the later and released version on Martha.

Me and my mate recognised Smokey on Your Wonderful Sweet Sweet Love...he reckoned it was like Smokey talking through a fog horn!! Not sure whether that was a statement, a compliment or what!! lol

BTW, YWSSL was a vault track....

Hi Tony,
It was not the Romeos. I was at the session!!
It was recorded at Virtue Studios which is now a vacant lot having been purchased by Temple university.

I believe it's Tata Vega singing along with Diana Ross on "One Love in My Lifetime" 1976.

Ms. Vega also sings a verse in Stevie Wonder's "A Seed's A Star" (Secret Life of Plants album 1979). She has such a range. She could sing in a high pitch or a deep gravely voice, as you hear all within one song: "Miss Celie's Blues" (Color Purple sountrack 1986).

Top of pageBottom of page   By MotownFan (65.42.86.0) on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 06:45 am:

Actually it's Martha & The Vandellas on "Guarentee For A Lifetime" by Mary Wells. You can clearly hear Rosalind's high pitched soprano soaring in the background.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Uptight! (24.55.6.144) on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 - 06:59 am:

On the Diana Ross & Supremes track "The Beginning of The End" (Cream/Crop LP), all of a sudden Syreeta Wright chimes in to ad lib the words, "Mind, mind, mind...!"

I guess it was added (maybe "punched in") for a little more Gospel flavor, but I chuckle whenever I hear it.

You can hear Diana Ross's voice on Mary Wells' "Guaranteed For A Lifetime", "He's The One I Love" and "You Lost The Sweetest Boy".

The Originals sang on Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life" and Jimmy Ruffin's "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted among others.

Deniece Williams did the vocal obbligatos on Minnie Riperton's "Every Time He Comes Around".

Marvin Gaye's voice is audible on The Originals' "I'll Wait For You".

Dee Dee Warwick sang background on her sister Dionne's early Scepter hits.

dvd mike: Among the bg voices on "You Lost the Sweetest Boy," Ross' is the loudest, isn't it? Even louder than Wells'! LOL

btw: Where did you hear about the Originals singing on Stevie's "For Once In My Life"?

Hey Bobby Eli, did you play guitar on those early Mason sessions? I love all her Artic recordings especially "Oh, How It Hurts"and the way the guitars sound. On Mary Wells "Guarnteed For A Lifetime" It does sound like the Vandellas NOT the Supremes.

Freddie Gorman of the Originals has always said they sang on For Once In My Life.

It's Lani Groves with Jim Gilstrap on YATSOML - or is Gloria Barley her 'other' name?

Syreeta sings uncredited with Stevie on If You Really Love Me

Bobby Byrd sings with James Brown on Licking Stick-Licking Stick, Sex Machine and Soul Power, among others.

The Dells back up Barbara Lewis on Hello Stranger. They also backed up Dinah Washington on one of her Mercury albums.

Hey Weldon,
hows it going, always great to hear from you.
I Take it that the 2 Tiffanys records I have are 2 different groups then.As the names are spelled diferently.
One is Tiffanys as on Arctic Records and the other one that I have is on a uk yellow Chess Demo, and off the top of my head is Tiffanies.
I know the record is on the us KR label, which I dont know a lot about.Unless you can verify it Weldon.
Also is it your Tiffanys that also recorded on the Atlantic and Josie Labels or am I way of beam here?
As always Weldon,
thanks for your time
Mel.

The Jackson 5 sang on Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothin'" (I can't recall whether their name was credited on the label but Stevie does drop their name in the song).

The Dells sang on the Players' "He'll Be Back" (1966).

Major Lance's "Monkey Time" featured the Impressions.

Barbara Acklin's vocals can be heard on Jackie Wilson's "(I Can Feel Those Vibrations) This Love Is Real".

Eugene Record & the Chi-lites did the backups on Tony Drake's "Suddenly", Jackie Wilson's "You Got Me Walking" (which they recorded prior) and many singles by Barbara Acklin.

Hamish Stuart & Alan Gorrie of the Average White Band did the "whoa, whoa, whoa"'s on Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman"

Harry,
You are probably right. The source I checked had both Lani Groves and Gloria Barley listed as singers on "...Sunshine...". I could not remember who the co-lead was and went with what it said in the all music guide, which is always a dangerous proposition. :)

Ken

I can remember falling inlove with the song "Melancholy Fire", by NOrman Connors, when the real soloist was Glenn Jones...And I like the song "Making Love" by Herbie Hancock, but it was another soloist actually performing thte song.
Sorry, I can't remember his name.
