Can anyone name some nonsense backing vocals as in the Velvelettes "bop bop sookie doo wah (or something like that) correct me J.L.
or as in the Flamingos"doo wop shoo bop" or as in the Chiffons "doo lang doo lang doo lang or even Da doo run run.

Does the beginning of Barbara Lewis' "Hello stranger" qualify. I believe the Dells go "Doo wap, doo wap, my baby(twice), then Barbara chimes in ...hello stranger

The background parts on the Platters' "The Great Pretender" weren't all that terrific

lolol! And thank you for giving the VELVELETTES a mention Bobby

I used to love Mary Wells's "On Little Boy (What Did You Do To Me)"..

ooo, look at me, (sho bub sho bub)
And it's only been a few days (sho bub sho bub)

That line never struck me as funny until I saw a man miming to it dressed up as a pregnant woman!

And I love the Mmmmmmwa...on I'm Gonna Walk Right Up To Him, Give Him A Great Big Kiss (Mmmmmmmmmmwa) from the Shangri Las

Was it the Marcels who did that classic version of Blue Moon? It started with a whole lot of dinga dang dings and then went into the song?

Who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong?

And Mott the Hoople's background singers sang Sha na na na push push. (Roll away the stone)

The lyrics in "Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)" by Barry Mann from 1961 explain it all... Doo-Wop made in heaven!

Words and Music by Barry Mann and Gerry Goffin

I'd like to thank the guy
Who wrote the song
That made my baby
Fall in love with me

Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

When my baby heard
"Bomp bah bah bomp "
"Bah bomp bah bomp bah bomp bomp"
Every word went right into her heart
And when she heard them singin'
"Rama lama lama lama"
"Rama ding dong"
She said we'd never have to part
So

Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

Each time that we're alone
Boogity boogity boogity
Boogity boogity boogity shoo
Sets my baby's heart all aglow
And everytime we dance to
Dip da dip da dip
Dip da dip da dip
She always says she loves me so
So

Who put the bomp
In the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram
In the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop
In the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip
In the dip da dip da dip?
Who was that man?
I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby
Fall in love with me (yeah!!)

while most backups do a series of 4 (bomp bah bomp bah bomp, rama lama ding dong, dip da
dip da dip, boogity boogity shoo)'s and one solo backup is singing "oh-oh-oh"'s

Backups conclude with 3 more (bomp bah bomp bah bomp, rama lama ding dong, dip da dip da
dip, boogity boogity shoo)'s with that same soloist overlaying "oh-oh-oh"s

Lars

One of the best is "Rang Tang Ding Dong (I Am The Japanese Sandman)" by the Cellos from 1957. Certainly not PC now, though!

"Well, he goes, a rang tang ding dong ranky sanky..."

the "rundy-rundy-papa-boom-run-dun..." was a very popular background on countless R&B tunes including Mickey and Sylvia's "Se De Boom Run Dun."

Also, the Miracles "chinga-chinga-papa" on "I Need Some Money" is pretty neat and different.

You also have Jake Carey's bass on the Flamingos' "Need Your Love" with the very unique "baaaaa-ba-ba-do-ba," which is one of my faves.

Also the Shirells first record on Tiara and then Decca.. I met him on a sunday.
Doo rundy rundy rundy poppa .....

By the way the term "doo wop" itself was taken from a lot of the early r& b group harmony records such as Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers etc.,which featured that very backing riff although in a lot of cases it was "doo wah" especially on a lot of ballads of the era.

This phenomenon was developed by the early "corner" singers who did not have the luxury of having backing musicians, therefore having to imitate these sounds vocally as "human beat boxes" do today, and therefore creating
a whole genre of music.

It's not R&B but, on "Monster Mash", during the bridge the singers sing "wah-oo tennis shoe..". And there's The Beatles doing "tit tit tit.." during "Girl". And here's an obscure one: On "Canyons of Your Mind", a doo-wop parody by The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band, they sing "frying pan, frying pan" as a background part..

"Dig a potato"?

It's not really a backing vocal, but Slim Harpo's "Te-Ni-Nee-Ni-Nu" is some wonderful nonsense.

Oh, and if Marshall can mention the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band, then I get to mention the Rutles' "Blue Suede Schubert" which borrows the backing line from the Shirelles as filtered through the Beatles' "Boys" (Bop Shoo-Wop/ Bop Bop Shoo-Wop) and modifies it to (Bop Schubert/ Bop Bop Schubert). :)

Ken

Two rather crazed record intros just popped into my head, both sung by bass singers: The intro to "Heartaches" by The Marcels went, if I remember correctly: "Dip dip dip dip , werp a werp werp, um um um um, bomp a bomp bomp, doom dida doom-doom doom-doom, Heartaches...". And there's a Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers record that starts out with "Oodly pappa cow.. " I forget the rest.
