Seriously, it would be good if there was a return to artists and musicians instead of accountants and commodities.

2025? I don't know about soul, but when you consider that current rock band styles can be traced back to 1970 without any problem--that's 33 years for pity sake--and could be with out a stretch be taken back to the mid '50's, I wonder if there will be a major revolution in POPULAR music in the near future, rather than the evolutionary changes that have gone on over the past 50 or so years.
What may alter this is that sound preservation tecniques have advanced so far in the past 50 or 60 years that past sounds reproduce well. I think nothing of pulling out a 40 year old LP and playing it, something my parents would (or could) not have done 40 years ago.
Phew. That was a long winded way of saying I don't know.

I'm happy to be true to my opinions also. Sometimes, however, I just keep my opinions to myself.

I know we all, at times, have some harsh postings over here, but I don't want to "force" my opinion on anyone here. That way I won't have to assert my first amendment rights. Just knowing I have them makes me feel somewhat secure in keeping my opinions to myself.

Fayette: I feel you! Not everyone is going to agree on everything all the time but if you don't say it the way someone wants you to say it or agree with them, then you're the bad guy. I've had this experience in other forums & it really gets tiresome when people just don't want to accept the fact that someone's opinion is different than theirs. I would've thought the purpose of a forum is to read & express diverse opinions. If we all agreed on everything, it would be pretty dull! ;o)

Peace!

I'm sorry Fayette if I offended you with my post. It wasn't your post that cause my reaction or over-reaction. Your posts are enjoyed by many on this forum. Please don't take it the wrong way. We all have just opinions that we express. That's good. I'm glad you went to the web site to hear for yourself. And you're right, sometimes we just blurt out things without thinking. I do that on several occasions. Please accept my apology.

I was thinking of inviting several more artist to come and board on the Forum. Mainly, these artist are enjoyed by the UK. Detroit Emeralds, The Metros, Martha Reeves, Cash McCall, etc. But sometimes, I'm afraid they may be met by "in your face" opinions, and I don't want them to fault me for bringing them aboard.

Again, would you accept my apology?

sis detroit, i will accept your apology, i'm sure
if mary has been in this business some 40 or
more years, she heard quite a few things, but we have to give her credit for having the stamina
to maintain.i'm probably the most biased supreme
fan because even though when i was a lil girl
we where always pretending to be the supremes
myself florence,pat brown diana,we practiced
singing, even though i could sing i always preferred
writing.i have even written some things mary
probably could smoke on.that maybe could bring
her really out.so by all means welcome mary.
that brings me to say that we shouldn't take
things so personally.

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.15.28) on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 10:04 pm:

Think I got it right.
Clear Channel Communications has jocks in remote locations (say, Chicago, for instance) do voice tracks with local references, weather, PSA's and the like-including announced record intros-that are fed to the local station and blended by computer with the music playlist. So when the local station goes.....
"It's going to be a sunny day here in Flint, with a high around 70. Now here's the latest by -----on WXXX", he's actually pretaped the voice track in another city.
Right?

Top of pageBottom of page   By john dixon (205.188.209.38) on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 11:31 pm:

Sis,doug is right, Clear Channel pays an already full time salaried employee an extra five grand a year to 'voice-track' a city outside the market he's located in, which saves them a full salary. In other words, every time a CC employee accepts (and I know for a fact they're pressured) a voice track gig for some extra dinero, a full salaried employee is eliminated.

In Philly the two Black Powerhouse stations, WDAS and WUSL..power 99 were both purchased by Clear Channel although their respective air personalities are still on the air, but who knows for long. WDAS has been a beacon of the Black community for over fifty years now and it would be a shame to see its demise as we knew it. What a pity!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 01:11 pm:

Hey Gang:
John Dixon & Doug are dead on about Clear Channel - I should know because they are doing this "voice-tracking" thing at my hometown's radio station (Rochester NY) among other cities.

When I visited WVOR-FM/WHAM-AM three years ago to see my old colleagues, Clear Channel converted two of the station's former production rooms, the Program Director's office and one other office into voice-tracking rooms so that the live DJs that work there can go into another room before or after their shift to do a show in another city and/or state. When talking to my old on-air friends and seeing my former production manager, I saw for myself how burned out they were from their work (sullen faces, no jolliness..).

Just think - four pieces of office space turned into voice-tracking rooms equalling four on-air personalities who lost their jobs.

I'm glad I got the hell out of there when I did.

stu, I understand what you're saying, but what you're referring to is something we used to call 'theatre of the mind'; giving the impression someone was there when he was actually on tape. But the advent of voice-tracking that I (+ doug, kevin, etc.) am talking about can be traced directly to 1996 and the passgage of the telecommunications act which deregulated radio ownership and allowed Clear Channel & Infinity & Citadel and the rest of those soulless corporations to gobble up as many radio stations as they were able to. So this development which has sucked out the joy and local flavor of radio is fairly recent.

John Dixon:

Amen to that. When I go back to my hometown, both stations I referred to have lost whatever originality they had.

WHAM-AM (the news-talk station) used to have these very authoratative-sounding jingles that grabbed your attention (along with a voice-over that would make Barry White sound like a chipmunk!). These have been replaced by pip-squeak sounding voices that have no authority or uniqueness whatsoever.

WVOR is another story - they've replaced a chunk of the on-air staff with DJs who are not from the city or surrounding area (a pre-requesite when I was working there in the pre-Clear Channel days) - I wouldn't be surprised if they came from out of state. These folks sound like they "rip & read" during their shows - there's no connection to the listener(s). And don't get me started on the playlist...(all the hits all the time all the same).

The only stations that have maintained their originality are the ones owned by individuals in the community (WDKX-FM is owned by the Langston family while WJZR-FM'S owners are the Rust family, who once owned WHAM-AM).

Like I said, I'm glad I left when I did. I only listen to community or public radio.
Kevin Goins - KevGo

Top of pageBottom of page   By douglasm (68.113.15.28) on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 06:22 pm:

John....
....Actually you and Stu are both right. What let groups like Clear Channel to voice track from remote locations was the internet, which allows high quality voice to be transmitted almost instantly. Thus, the voice-tracker can personalize any change in the show very quickly, if needed.
Voice tracking is also done on the local level. I used to voice track my mid-day show on occasion when an appointment prevented me from doing it live. The PD would hand me the playlist (right down to spots and jingles), and I'd do the voice tracks, then load them into the Audio/Vault system, which would then match my individual breaks at the appropriate times.
I have a question, though. Is this really that much worse than the (say it fast....)
"IT'S TEMPERATURE AT TIME WITH NAME OF ANNOUNCER ON SNAPPY IDENTIFIER. HERE'S THE HOT ONE BY ARTIST....IT'S TITLE ON SNAPPY IDENTIFIER."
...fake Drake formats that dominated the late '60's?

YES JOHN: I APPRECIATE YOUR POINT THAT TODAYS TECHNOLOGY...COMBINED WITH FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS DEREGULATION...HAS PROLIFORATED THIS TYPE OF PRACTICE!!!...ACTUALLY...RADIO DEREGULATION STARTED DURING THE REAGAN ADMINISTRATION...ALONG WITH MANY OTHER FORMS OF FEDERAL DEREGULATION!!!...THE POINT THAT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE...IS THAT THE BASIC CONCEPT OF ELIMINATING WORKFORCE THROUGH BETTER TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN A VIABLE ECONOMIC CONCEPT FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER!!!...ROBOTICS (WE'LL GET TO YOU LATER FAYETTE) HAVE PUT MANY A WORKER OUT OF COMMISSION IN INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING...BUT PERHAPS WE TAKE IT MORE PERSONALLY WHEN IT OCCURS IN AN INDUSTRY BASED IN THE "ARTS"!!!...BUT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE...I GUESS THAT ONE WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT ANY BUSINESSES FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS IT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO IT'S SHAREHOLDERS...AND UNFORTUNATLY...SOMETIMES THE QUALITY AND ARTISTRY SUBORDINATES ITSELF TO THE "BOTTOM LINE"!!!...NOW FAYETTE: WHY BOTHER WITH ROBOTS...WHEN FOR JUST A FEW DOLLARS MORE...YOU COULD INQUIRE ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PURCHASING THE REAL THING???...JUST HAVING FUN...YOU'RE THE COOLEST!!!...STU

Fayette - you don't like Stubass very much, do ya? LOL! :-)

Ooh ooh ooh! At the Detroit gathering, I say all the girls bring a sequinned dress, bring Vandellas, Supremes, Velvelettes and Marvelettes records, and let's play "Motown Girl Group!" Yeah!!!

But on a more serious note, in relation to what Sue stated about radio stations losing their local flavor. For about all four of my college years, the Pittsburgh station 3WS had these dynamite radio shows on Sunday night, where old Pittsburgh oldies would be played (B-sides and rare tunes that Pittsburghers loved from back in the day along with Pittsburgh artists like the Skyliners' etc.). And then afterwards from midnite-2 T.J. Lubinsky had his Soul In The City show where I could request a song like Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You" and by golly it'd be played. To my chagrin, the times when I returned home for various breaks over the course of this school year, I've not had that. No, instead, there is a nationally syndicated show in place that plays the typical Beatles-Stones-Supremes-Beach Boys songs. And I thought "what a yawn." I really don't like how these new radio formats are being thrown on listeners, and they have absolutely no say in it. The stations are basically saying "this is the direction in which we are headed, so deal with it." NPR it is.

Doug,
You were in Detroit during the '60s/'70s, weren't you? If you did, you heard CKLW and its Drake format; somehow they were creative within that admittedly rigid format ...

Brother Bill Gable was particularly good at making an eight second intro utterly unforgettable ...

That Pittsburgh station sounds great, Nish, and exactly what the Clear Channels and Infinitys have destroyed. That priceless Pittsburgh sound will be forgotten, just as our great Detroit records aren't played locally on the oldies stations, in favor of "This Diamond Ring," and the usual Beatles/Beach Boys/Heman's Hermits and lite Motown mix.

Sue...
...I'm not denying the Drake format itself, when done right it's masterful. To me, Steve Hunter is a god. But get outside of the city (WTAC, WSAM, WCRM, WMDN) and the fake Drake (time, temp, title, artist) smothered a lot of very good jocks in the late '60's.
Nobody mentioned satelite programing that has also laid waste to local programing, especially in smaller markets. To listen to the ABC or Jones oldies programing out here in Washington without the Ventures, Sonics, or Wailers is shere blastfamy.
