There have been many groups who put on a great live show. One of my all time favorites were the New Birth. Does anyone remember the lead singers? I believe they were brothers or cousins. The lead had such a unique voice and would put so much feeling and heart into his songs. The live shows were fantastice (songs like ...Dream Merchant, I Can Understand It, Wildflower) Classics, real classics! And I believe that later during the groups life a singer from Detroit (Ty? something like that..) joined the group for a brief stint and they had a couple hits then as well. I really was impressed with the lead guitarist and the group's band leader. (Charlie) I believe. Anyone know if any of the group is still involved in music?

Ohhh, you are talking about my band! I just love the way New Birth SANG the HECK out of "It's Impossible," as if they'd first heard it in church, and not on a Perry Como record! Ha!

Hey Brian:
Good to see you out here, amigo! Now how about my New Birth fave, "I Can Understand It" (complete with TWO false endings!). No dis-respect to Bobby Womack, but to quote our fellow liner note writer, A. Scott Galloway - "New Birth straight-jacked Bobby's version!"

RE: what New Birth are up to today.
A much smaller outfit (2/3) still exist based on the Wilson's (??? -- my brain is still dead from the weekender, Leslie the lead singer was a Wilson wasn't he but may be gettin confused with their 70's producer, Frank Wilson).
The current outfit still perform live at times and in the recent past were back talkin with Harvey Fuqua re: new recording work.

John,

Your memory's not that bad - Leslie Wilson was
the main lead for New Birth.

Vandelron,

Although Susaye claims she sang lead on "Until
It's Time .." Harvey Fuqua says she never sang with the group. Since Harvey was there from the beginning I'm inclined to go with him

New Birth is definetly great live ! I saw them
along with Bohannon and Natalie Cole at the
Apollo in the spring of 1975. What a great show!
It's fun think about seeing Natalie in her big
Afro, just starting out, lol.

Peace,

Hello Everyone,

"It's impossible" b/w "Honeybee" is the jam! Does anyone who sang lead on this particular song? The male lead reminded me a little of David Ruffin. Harvey Fuqua definitely has some great ears!

Peace!

Leslie and Melvin Wilson are brothers. With Anne Bogan they recorded as Love, Peace & Happiness. Anne also sang on some New Birth recordings but is almost never credited as doing so. NB main female lead was Londee(Lottie)Wiggins. Anne was raising young children at the time and wasn't as committed as the others and was the first to kinda fade away from the project. Still LPH recorded and released two albums; on the second LP Anne, Leslie and Melvin wrote most of the songs.

The last thing i heard was the leader of New Birth bacame the Lead singer of LTD, when they recorded "April Love". One of my all time favorite New Birth Song was "Been Such A Long Time".
Sorry, really don't know what happened 2 the rest of the "New Birth" group.

Where is Ann Bogan (ex-Marvelette) and member of New Birth? I loved her voice.
