OK EVERYBODY I WANT YOU TO THINK BACK TO YOUR VERY FIRST LOVE. WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE SONG
THAT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF HIM OR HER?

I will never forget. My first boyfriend lived down the street from me. He and his friends always went to dances at the Graystone, and St. Stephens. My father wouldn't let us go. While I'm sitting on the porch as he passes by my house, I would sing "There Goes My Baby, moving on down the line." (LOL) The Drifters.

Ahhhhh yes ! Without a doubt...the Marvin & Tammi duets. Her name was Debra "C."...and she was "my girl" from 1st grade until she discovered older guys (Jr. High).

1wicked - You know when you get into the teens, the girls mature faster than the guys. Have you seen her since you've become an adult?

Top of pageBottom of page   By 1wicked (64.32.154.94) on Saturday, March 01, 2003 - 11:21 pm:

Sis....I haven't seen her, but the beautiful, witty, independent, intelligent young lady I had that "love jones" for got hooked up with the wrong guy & dabbled in his habits. Word is she'll never be 100% again.......

And BTW....it's not always a maturity issue. It's just feeling you're something "special" because the older crowd notices you....

You're right 1wicked. My first boyfriend passed away last year.

The Drifters, and Sam Cooke were really kicking it when I was a teen.

First I would play Bobby Treetops
'wait till I get to know ya'trying to be all cool, but must of been one sad gonk,
then when things went okeh for the first few months or whatever then I would play The Tempts 'The way you do the things you do'.
A mate got me to write down all the lyrics to the Tempts track and he posted it to his girl.
Always remember one relationship ending, and I couldnt stop playing Jackie Edwards,'Feel so Bad'and also The Isleys and 'Theres no love left'.
Crazy youthful days gone long by.

I think my first love was at school and Del Shannon's Swiss Maid was the song that was around at the time. However, as the relationship progressd the song soon changed to Del's "Runaway" LOL!!!

My next love only became so cos I found that they had bought a copy of the Temps "My Girl" on Stateside and I didn't have it!!

When Vonnie and I first started dating some of the albums we would listen to in my den of iniquity were by Dionne Warwick and the Delphonics.
I often wonder what the youth of today would consider to be "the song that was playing on the day we met" type of song.
What would it be??"Let me feel yo booty"
"Ignition" by R. Kelly or "F**k the police by NWA You get my drift.
There is hardly any song, in my opinion in todays world that would qualify as a cherished oldie of tomorrow.

Her name was Cathy and we met while we were both riding our bicycles. It was July 1973, about a month after I graduated from high school and we met near the Henry Moore sculpture on 56th & Ellis on the campus of the University of Chicago. She had the biggest, neatest, shiniest Afro I'd ever seen and she had this really sexy voice. We started going out soon after and I remember her telling me her favorite song was "How Could I Let You Get Away" by The Spinners. But unfortunately, the gold I thought I'd found turned out to be fool's gold. She was a chronic liar and by September, she was gone from my life. It took quite some time to get over it, but eventually, I did.

Probably three songs taken together would work for me, all from my misspent childhood:

"Nice to Be With You"--Gallery
"Love Jones"--Brighter Side of Darkness
"Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat"--DeFranco Family(this last one I still play when I'm thinking of one girl or another I'm interested in)

Best,

Mark

Stephanie...you would bring up Tavares. After "slow dragging" to their melodic offering of "Remember What I Told You To Forget" (with my 1st post high school sweetheart), I experienced a rather painful episode of a "male only" malady. (Though medical experts say the condition doesn't exist....I truly beg to differ !!) In retrospect...I don't know if my physical pain or the embarrassment of her mother seeing us (and mostly me) in a semi-compromising "situation" were worse. Hmmm...or was it the fear that mom might tell dad (who I didn't know was deceased) & I might have ended up a "statistic" ?? (LOL)

Whatever the case...I learned a valuable lesson and I've had nothing but love and (greater) RESPECT for women since.

My first love was my high school sweetheart and my first wife (RIP). I was singing 'My Girl' with a group I had in high school. It was the first day of school, Sept 10, 1979 and I knew she was the one.

In June 1989, I saw the Temptations at Lincoln Center in NYC and Ron Tyson brought me on stage and I got to sing a verse of 'My Girl' to my wife-to-be.

The following year, a week before our wedding, we met Eddie Kendricks and Dennis Edwards at Sweetwaters in NYC. Eddie allowed us to come into the dressing room after they settled in from the first 1st set. We told them how we met and that we were getting married the following week. Eddie said "I see our music is still putting folks together".

She passed away in 1993 from cancer and I sang 'My Girl' at her wake.

Although that chapter is closed in my life; I remarried and have a son, she will always be my first TRUE love.

Joe R...That story literally has me in tears as I am reading this post. The part about the wake...
I lost my wife as well in 1989 just before the holidays and I can relate to this.
God Bless you!!!

Hi Eli,

I'm sorry for the loss of your wife.

Losing my wife was devastating for me. We were "temptations partners in crime" and she meant the world to me. I lost her 2 days after my 30th birthday.

Joe & Eli:
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I cannot put into words how this moves me.

My first love - Wendy Keller. We were Communications majors in college (1984-1986)- two years apart (she was the older & the wiser). Met while DJ'ing at the college radio station and became close. The song that did it for us - Simply Red's "Holding Back The Years." Not exactly a love song or romantic but it reminded us not to take anything for granted or waste time on things trivial, that it's all right to laugh and to love yet to live our lives the way we want to and not by others' expectations.

When we were saying our goodbyes after her graduation (we decided to part as friends weeks before)we hugged, kissed & cried for the longest time while my Simply Red record was playing in the background. We promised to stay in touch (she came to visit me at school several times until I graduated in 1988).

Wendy was giving, passionate, smart, a bit punchy at times but a great lady. I learned so much from her and vice versa. Before we moved on with our lives in the early 1990s, she gave me one special gift - she helped me move from Rochester to NYC so I could work in the music industry.

Whenever I hear "Holding Back The Years" I think of Wendy and I smile.
