The key word here is ENTERTAINER. Most admired by the public = Michael Jackson. The most respected = Aretha. Just watch the audience reaction to both.

Stu,
Whose's the media chasing all day long and let's see how fast his tickets sell out. Who has the title Queen Of Soul and watch the AUDIENCE'S reaction to give respect. I'm not saying I necessary admire Michael. But I defintely respect Aretha. I'm not talking about personal hang ups the may have, just what they have accomplished with there being. I could have said Elvis for both titles but he's not around.

David Copperfield...he is an entertainer!
By Stranger56 (24.47.50.195) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 11:13 am: |
Hmmm....depends.
If we're talking about entertainers in general, I'd have to choose Sinatra(he WAS here most of the last 3 decades)as the most respected. You may not have liked him, but he commanded respect.
He may even qualify as most admired, in that he sold out around the world right up until he stopped performing in public in December 1994.
But, if you can consider this man an entertainer, I might have to pick Muhammad Ali as most admired. He has gone from being the arrogant boxer that many people resented, to a national figure that everyone seems to love. And it's been said that, his and Sinatra's are the two most famous names in the world.
If we're just talking about R&B, then you can probably make a case for Stevie and Patti, although my personal favorites are the Tops and Gladys.

Without a doubt the most repected talent
would be Smokey Robinson.
The accolades that his peers have given him are
in each and every Motown book that we've all read.
The reviewers, and music industry that have critiqued his talent over three decades have also never failed to be in awe of his genius.
He is also a gentleman of great integrity.
This week he is being honored at the White House.
I believe the event is Thursday.
A true national treasure. Congratulaions Smokey

Most admired depending on what circle you are in
HOLLYWOOD-Streisand and Speilberg
BROADWAY-Kander and Ebb and Elaine Stritch
RANB-Aretha hands down!! If she plays her cards right and gets off of the drugs the next one will be Whitney no doubt.
POP-You all said it Michael Jackson...if SHE had played her cards right with the media it could have been Diana Ross.
MEDIA DARLING IN MUSIC- I know some will disagree I still say Madonna!! Forget JLO everything Madonna does in the media and in music turnes to gold with the exception of some of her movies.
HONORABLE MENTION:
Smokey and Solomon Burke and Etta James are the names I hear the most when it comes to respect in the industry.

Most admired - in my book, Stevie Wonder.
Gifted, artistic, multi-talented, humorous, intelligent, generous, passionate, supportive, driven. Classy, a man who stands by his beliefs. Loved by many, regarded by all.
There will never be another like him.

I have a lot of respect for people who can manage to be consummate artists, but also hold the business end of things down in an industry that eats talent up and spits it out. The first two names that come to mind in that context are Smokey and the late great Curtis Mayfield.
Regards,
Ken
